Rare Gallery of Mustang Prototypes that Led to the First Five Generations [177 Photos] Posted: 11 Dec 2013 06:05 PM PST The final design of any automobile destined for mainstream consumption is a truly collective effort, one that goes through various stages of development before you see the finished product in car showrooms. Naturally, the same applies to every generation of the Mustang. We looked into Ford's archive and sorted out a plethora of images from the clay studies, sketches, rolling prototypes and concepts that played a smaller or a bigger role in the formation of the first five iterations of the series, from the original to the current S-197 codenamed model that will be replaced next year by the 2015 Mustang. Every picture tells a story. For example, did you know that when GM released the Corvette C2 with the now famous split rear window in 1963, Ford toyed around with the same idea for its Mustang coupe that was born the following year? Well, as you can see from this rare picture, the Blue Oval's designers built a fastback clay prototype featuring a split-rear window, but the styling feature never made it into production. Another interesting prototype from the development phase of the first generation Mustang (1964–1973) was the so-called "Allegro" study built in 1962 from a design team led by Gene Bordinat. Ford recalls: "While the production 1965 Mustang was a very different car in almost every visual detail from Allegro, the design study established the basic proportions that would define most Mustangs for the next five decades. The notchback coupe had the same long-hood, short-deck layout with a compact greenhouse that would roll out of the Rouge factory two years later." It might have been a reasonable move on Ford's behalf, given the 1973 oil crisis and the downsizing trend that was sweeping the industry, but the second generation Mustang (1973-1978) that was loosely based on the underpinnings of the subcompact Pinto, is one of the least loved Mustangs today. At some point, though, during the early stages of the Mustang II program, Ford did look into keeping the larger 1971-to-1973 platform with a completely new design, a prototype of which is pictured here. "This particular proposal was built on the 109-inch wheelbase, but aside from the galloping pony badge on the grille, almost nothing about it says Mustang," says Ford. The same can be said about the two prototype proposals for a fastback and a hardtop Mustang commissioned from the Ford-owned Ghia design studio in Italy. Too bad the only styling elements from the wedge-shaped 1971 Ghia Mustang II study that made it into the production car were the molded-in faux side scoops. Even today, it looks pretty neat. In 1979, Ford released the third iteration of the Mustang based on the longer Fox platform, which remained in production until 1993. Again, the Detroit carmaker's designers experimented with various ideas, including a three-door, shooting brake-like wagon concept in 1976 with what appears to be…faux wood paneling on the sides. In the same year, there was a notchback proposal with a sharper looking treatment for the front end and hood, supposedly reminiscent of earlier GT350 and GT500 cars. Before the introduction of the fourth generation Mustang (1994–2004) that ended up being rear-wheel drive (as all models of the series), Ford's people contemplated switching to a front-wheel drive (FWD) layout. In fact, they even commissioned the design of the only full-size clay concept for a FWD Mustang. It's worth noting that the Blue Oval's designers made a clever/cheeky change to one specific element of the car to separate it from its RWD stable-mates; can you spot what it is from this picture? Another concept for the Mk4 proposed a slippery shape with a lift-off panel to make the rear seat more accommodating for rear-seat passengers. Now, where you'd place/store that removable panel, is another (non-practical) story. In the minds of most Mustang fans, the fifth generation model (2005-2014), codenamed S-197, with its retro-inspired design that echoes the fastback Mustang models of the late-1960s, is the best version of the series after the original – not counting the new one, of course, as we still need time to digest it. Going retro may have won the hearts of Ford execs, but designers had offered alternative proposals as well, like this early sketch with a very cab-forward-like layout and a steeply sloping hood. For the final design, Ford went through a number of rolling prototypes and paper and computer renderings, each recommending a different styling angle. As we said in the beginning of this piece, each photo you see below in our collection from Ford's archive has its own story, many of which deserve a separate mention, but for the sake of time, we've included all of them in a single gallery. If you'd like us to tell you more about a specific model, just hit us up in the comments and we'll do our best to find out and share any available details we may have. By John Halas |
New BMW M3 and M4 Coupe Detailed, Smokey Burnout Function Confirmed! [50 Pics & Videos] Posted: 11 Dec 2013 05:08 PM PST With so much information readily available about the new 425hp (431PS) six-cylinder twin-turbo-powered BMW M3 Sedan and its two-door sibling that has split from the 3-Series family and will be known from now on as the M4 Coupe, it was hard for the Bavarians to surprise us, yet they did. How, you ask? Why, with the "Smokey Burnout" function on models fitted with the optional seven-speed dual-clutch M DCT Drivelogic transmission, of course. We heard and shared the rumor earlier today, but we can now officially confirm it and even provide some initial info on how it works. In BMW's own press-blurb words, "the Smokey Burnout function allows the driver to indulge in a degree of rear wheel spin while the car is moving at low speeds." For what it's worth, while the "Smokey Burnout" function was highlighted in the European release for the two cars, it was omitted from the North American version – at this point, we do not know if it will be on offer for the M3 and M4 sold on this side of the Atlantic. One of the biggest changes brought along by the fifth generation of the M3 / M4 is a return to a straight-six engine, albeit with a twin-turbocharged twist, which allows for more power than the outgoing E90/E92/E93 M3's 4.0-liter naturally-aspirated V8 that kicked out 414hp (420PS) at 8,300 rpm and 400Nm (295 lb-ft) at 3,900 rpm. The high-revving inline-six is rated for maximum output of 425hp (431PS) from 5,500rpm to 7,300rpm, but far more importantly, a peak torque of 550Nm (406 lb-ft) between 1,850rpm and 5,500rpm, which outstrips the previous model by around 40 percent, yet also offers a reduction in fuel consumption and emissions of around 25 percent. The improvements under the hood don't come with a weight penalty, and in fact, the M3/M4 are around 80kg (176 lbs) lighter on average than the outgoing M3 series. The M4 Coupe, for example, tips the scales at 1,497 kg or 3,300 lbs. BMW states that the reduction in weight comes from the slimmer and 10kg (22 lbs) lighter engine as well as the increased use of lightweight materials, such as carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) and aluminium for a number of chassis and body components. Both models feature a carbon roof, which is a first for the sedan. Power is delivered to the rear wheels via a standard six-speed manual gearbox, which for the first time, has the so-called "throttle blipping" feature that improves smoothness of gear changes. Optionally, buyers can go for the seven-speed dual-clutch M DCT that comes with paddle shifters and a launch control function. Both transmissions include stop-start function, brake energy regeneration and optimum shift indicator. As far as acceleration times are concerned, both the M3 and M4 hit 100km/h (62mph) in 4.1 seconds with the DCT and 4.3 seconds with the manual gearbox (0 to 60mph or 96km/h in 4.1 seconds with the standard 6-speed manual and 3.9 seconds with the optional 7-speed DCT). Top speed is limited in both cases to 250km/h (155mph) in standard trim, and 280km/h (174mph) with the optionally available M Driver's Package. We don't have North American fuel economy figures yet, but on the European driving cycle, BMW says that both coupe and sedan return a combine fuel consumption of 8.8 lt/100km (equal to 26.7mpg US and 32.1mpg UK) with the manual, and 8.3lt/100km (equal to 28.3mph US and 34.0mpg UK) with the DCT. Naturally, there's so much piece of gear on the M3/M4 that it would literally take a few hours of reading to get to the bottom of it, but if want an outline of what is important on the new model(s) aside from everything else we've mentioned here, we'll give you the skinny. BMW mentions the twin-turbo engine's new cooling concept in which the air intake system includes an indirect intercooler, the Active M Differential, the Electric Power Steering (EPS) with three driving modes (Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus), and the specially tuned electronic nannies such as the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system. There's also a Stability Clutch Control system that opens the clutch when the car is understeering to bring it back into line. The two cars ride on a modified version of the platform used on the 3-Series sedan and 4-Series coupe with a lowered ride height and wider tracks (+34mm or 1.34 inches at the front, and 18mm or 0.7 inches wider at the back), with a reworked suspension on both ends, that includes the use of a carbon-fiber strut brace, aluminum control arms and subframes. In standard trim, the M3/M4 will roll on 18-inch lightweight aluminum wheels in a staggered setup (front axle: 255 mm, rear axle: 275 mm width), with 19-inch rims offered as a, no doubt, pricey option. Powerful standard compound brakes and lighter BMW M carbon ceramic brakes will provide stopping power. Much like the outgoing M3, the styling of the cars is aggressive in a suggestive manner, but is in no way overbearing, with a number of aerodynamic components, bloated wheel arches, fender vents, unique mirrors, a hood dome and other small trim details like the double kidney grilles. Inside, you'll meet the typical M-dressed interior with carbon fiber elements, body hugging sports seats and unique driver controls. BMW said it has developed a free M Laptimer app, which allows owners to analyze their personal driving style once hooked up to their smart phone. BMW said that its Munich plant will host production of the new M4 Coupe, while the M3 Sedan will be built in Regensburg, where 222,293 units of the second, third and fourth generations of the M3 combined have been produced since 1992. The world premiere of both cars will take place at the 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit this January, with sales in Europe to start around spring, and in the U.S., in early summer (as a 2015MY). These Videos Might Make You Want These Two Replicas, One Of Which Uses Alfa 166 Parts Posted: 11 Dec 2013 04:18 PM PST While outrageously powerful AC/Shelby Cobra kit cars are actually pretty common in their respective DIY niche, not all focus on quality and some are downright ridiculous. You usually still end up spending more than you thought at first if you want a top notch example with a suitable V8 engine, big brakes, proper springs, dampers and suspension bits. An impressively fast example of one is the XCS Fusion 427 pitted by Autocar against a Jaguar XKR-S convertible. With a 639hp V8 under the hood and just 1,080 kg (2,380 lbs) to lug around, the replica has no trouble in showing the Jag the dark side of its exhausts; it does however, show just how good these modern automatic gearboxes – the hot XK surges forward seamlessly, whereas the cog swapping in the Cobra is visibly slower. However, if you want to pay around half of its price tag of €105,000 o $147,000 and have an even better looking albeit much slower replica to play with – a perfect-looking Lancia Stratos, built by a new company called Lister-Bell that has so far sold twelve examples since it was brought out. In fact, you can get one in kit form for as low as €35,900 or $49,000, on condition that you build it yourself and also source the necessary parts (and 3.2-liter V6 engine) from an Alfa Romeo 166 – they're dirt cheap, don't worry. It rides on a custom chassis but still needs to cannibalize on the Italian sedan's mechanicals to truly be called complete, plus it also gets a proper driving position and to my mind is definitely one of the most desirable replicas there are. 266HP Peugeot 308 R Rendered in Production Trim Posted: 11 Dec 2013 03:40 PM PST After Peugeot announced that a production version of the 308 R concept that was on display at the Frankfurt motor show, was most likely going to become reality, the rendering by X-Tomi Design is very handy in showing us what that might look like. Don't think for a second that it will be very different to the show car, because it won't – it will definitely lose the two-tone paintjob, though. Power will come from the rapid 1.6-liter turbocharged engine that they've been able to extract 266 hp (270PS), the suspension will be lowered and the car will also get a body kit to differentiate it from lesser models, including a 200 hp GTi model that will probably be added to the range as a kind of warm stepping stone to the "R". However, I don't think Peugeot will launch this 308 R in orange, so I took the liberty to change the color of the rendering to something resembling the red they showed it in; original rendering also available below. Watch Chris Harris Drive the 2013 BMW DTM Racing Car Posted: 11 Dec 2013 03:13 PM PST The DTM championship is probably the most sophisticated touring car series in the world. It is also the only racing series where Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz are battling each other through their factory teams. While they are referred to as touring cars, DTM racers have very little in common with the production cars they're representing on track. They have a carbon chassis, an extreme aerodynamic kit that produces a huge amount of downforce and 4.0-liter V8 engines developing 480 horsepower and 501 Nm (370 lb-ft) of torque. Cars must not weigh less than 1,110 kg (2,447 lbs) including the driver, and lack ABS and traction control. Only the brakes, transmission, ECU, tyres and fuel type are the same on all cars. Chris Harris had the chance to drive a 2013 BMW M3 DTM and was obviously thrilled by the car. What surprised him though was the fact that the M3 DTM felt much more like a formula car than a touring car, with the sophisticated aerodynamics being responsible for that behavior. Scroll down to see how it is to drive such an extreme racing car and to find out how fast Harris was. By Dan Mihalascu |
2014 North American Car and Truck/Utility of the Year: The Three Finalists for Each Category Posted: 11 Dec 2013 02:32 PM PST It's time to learn the three finalists for the respective categories of the 2014 North American Car and Truck/Utility of the year. In the regular car segment, the three models that made it to the last round are the new Cadillac CTS, Mazda3 compact and Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, while the Jeep Cherokee, Chevrolet Silverado and Acura MDX are the candidates for the truck and utility vehicle award. Evidently, GM feels pleased having three nominees in the final round – hence the release of the group shot as soon as it learned the results… In 2013, Cadillac's ATS won the North American Car of the Year while the Ram 1500 was the North American Truck of the Year. Forty-eight automotive journalists from the United States and Canada took part in this year's voting, initially choosing from 28 cars and 18 truck and utility vehicles, all of which had to be completely-new or substantially redesigned models that were presented during the course of 2013. This past September, in the second round of voting, the jurors picked out 12 cars and 12 truck/utilities, from which we ended up with the three finalists we mentioned before. If you don't remember, these are the second phase candidates: North American Car of the Year
So, which of the three finalists (F) do you think will win the two respective awards for the 2014 North American Car and Truck/Utility of the year? |
Venezuela Moves to Government Regulatation of New and Used Car Prices to Fight Inflation Posted: 11 Dec 2013 02:02 PM PST Can you imagine a market in which the prices of products were set not by manufacturers, but from the state? Well, if you're doing business in Venezuela, you might need to get used to the idea, as president Nicolas Maduro said he'll regulate the price of new and used cars in order to fight record inflation. The law he intends to pass on will allow the government to set car prices, require manufacturers to provide weekly production figures, ensure that used car prices don't exceed new car costs and provide licenses to individuals to import a vehicle using an account in euros or dollars with a state bank. "The vehicle is produced for who? For society's need, not for the mafias that control it. We're going to regulate from the factory door to the place of sale," Maduro said on December 2 in a national radio and television address. This is the latest in a series of populist measures adopted by the government ahead of local elections on December 8. Last month, Maduro occupied a packaging plant he accused of raising prices, capped costs for commercial real-estate leases and forced price reductions at electronics stores using the military. In January, the national assembly introduced legislation to fix prices for new and used cars, which many Venezuelans use as a shield against inflation. This is why South America's largest oil exporter is one of the few countries in the world where automobiles typically gain in value the moment they are purchased. In October, annual inflation rose to a mind-boggling 54 percent, the highest rate in 16 years. Facelifted SsangYong Korando Hits UK Shores Posted: 11 Dec 2013 01:32 PM PST The pre-facelift SsangYong Korando was a very anonymous-looking crossover, though it did come with a decent diesel engine, all-wheel drive, lots of space and practical touches that reviewers were quite fond of. Now, the revised and refreshed version, first seen as a Korean model, has made its debut in the UK, where it starts from £14,995. Most noticeably, its front end has been redesigned quite successfully, though it's not a head-turner by any means, it now even has LED daytime running lights on higher trim models. New 16- and 17-inch rim designs are available too, as are new body colors: Sunrise red, Cosmic blue and Carbonic grey, Space black, Grand white and Silent silver. The dash layout, while still simple and clutter-free, has seen a notable attempt at a redesign, along with several other inside areas. New are soft-touch plastics, matte wood grain inserts as well as extra cupholders , mobile phone tray and flip-down sunglasses holder. Under the bonnet, it retains the trusty 2.0-liter diesel unit that can be had in two power outputs: 146 and 172 hp – the latter only in conjunction with an automatic gearbox, while the weaker one only gets a manual; both come with six-speeds. Oddly enough, while differing in top end punch, both versions have the same 360 Nm or 265 lb-ft of torque served between 2,000 – 3,000 rpm. Handily, its makers insist that it can handle going off-road too if all-wheel drive is selected (from £16,495), claiming that "unlike its competitors a very high percentage of customers choose their Korando with 4x4." The Korando comes with a full complement of electronic aids, though it has none of the active ones that involve cameras or the vehicle stopping on its own. It's one of the few real rivals to the Dacia Duster, though it's still not bulletproof. By Andrei Nedelea |
Spy Shots: 2015 Mercedes-Benz B-Class Facelift Posted: 11 Dec 2013 01:02 PM PST A nip and tuck is in order for Mercedes-Benz's second-generation B-Class compact minivan, a fairly lightly camouflaged tester of which recently crossed paths with our scoop photographer who took a few shots of the car. The tapped front end and tail lamps suggest that Benz's designers will keep the exterior makeover limited to the respective sections of the car, with the rear also sporting integrated exhaust pipes in the revised apron. For the interior, we hear that changes will likely focus on materials and colors, along with some tech updates to the B-Class' available infotainment system features. It is also possible that Mercedes will add its new generation of small displacement engines co-developed with partner Renault. We should see the refreshed B-Class in European showrooms in 2015. Take a Look at the Wonderful Cars from the Garage of Paul Walker and Roger Rodas Posted: 11 Dec 2013 12:29 PM PST It's no secret Paul Walker and his friend and business partner Roger Rodas were very passionate about cars, and their unfortunate destiny was to lose their lives in a Porsche Carrera GT supercar crash on November 30, 2013. The video you're about to see shows how impressive their auto collection was. Released a year ago by the folks from The Smoking Tire, the video didn't say at the time who owned the cars, at the request of Walker and Rodas. However, the description of the video was recently changed, with the uploader admitting the cars belonged to the two men. "Though we originally respected their privacy when they asked not to say who owned the cars, as we filmed this over a year ago, it makes no sense now not to say the cars all belonged to Paul Walker and Roger Rodas," reads the video description. The two friends clearly had a taste for fast, beautiful automobiles and for high-performance cars, as you'll see a lot of souped-up, lightweight limited edition models in their collection. However, they seemed to have a particularly soft spot for Saleen-prepped Mustangs, of which there are many in their garage. Scroll down to check them out. By Dan Mihalascu |
1968 Fiat Dino Coupe with Great Paint for Sale in CA Posted: 11 Dec 2013 11:59 AM PST This 1968 Fiat Dino Coupe is selling for $18,000 – its owner is moving out of California, and will not be able to look after it any more. The exterior looks in top condition, but the engine reportedly needs a refurb, and the interior, while looking very clean seems to still be missing some bits like the door panes; wires under the steering column are also apparently clipped for no reason. But still…as much as we all like the modern cars that come out, with their active aerodynamics, increasingly widespread use of carbon fiber and heavy reliance on intrusive safety-promoting electronics, there's always something special about classics that makes us completely forget all of the above. We just concentrate on sleek lines that cannot be replicated today, raspy imperfect engine notes that also cannot be reproduced and the feeling that whoever worked on that car back in the day did so passionately, with the aim of earning his or her daily bread by making you happy. That's part of what you're buying into with a sporty (and especially Italian) car from the period, and this 2.0-liter Ferrari V6-engined Dino with a five-speed gearbox does deserve your attention, if for the engine note alone. However, the owner does warn that it will still take some money before it's fully fixed up; if you'd like the car without the spare parts that he's offering (detailed in the Craigslist ad), the price is $16,500. Toyota Outlines New Gran Turismo 6 Vision Concept, Sparks Comments About Supra Posted: 11 Dec 2013 11:38 AM PST It's only to be expected that, whenever Toyota talks about a coupe model these days, everyone's mind automatically goes to a replacement for the Supra, the brand's last (true) high performance sports car, regardless if it's true. The same is taking place with this new teaser sketch showing the silhouette of Toyota's racing concept for the Gran Turismo 6 Vision series, even though we only get this photo and nothing else from the Japanese carmaker and the creators of the racing game. Still, who can blame us for wishful thinking… The Gran Turismo Vision project, which includes concept cars made from automakers, design houses and other unrelated brands like Nike, will be available as special downloadable content (DLC) for players of the game in early 2014. Porsche Macan to Get 4-Cylinder Boxer Engine in Late 2014, Cayman and Boxster to Follow Posted: 11 Dec 2013 11:02 AM PST The brand-new Porsche Macan SUV will reportedly get an entry-level four-cylinder gasoline engine by the end of 2014. Currently the crossover is available with a choice of three engines: a 3.0-liter V6 biturbo gasoline engine, a 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel and the all-new 3.6-liter biturbo gasoline unit. A report from AutoExpress quotes Porsche manager of transmission and drivetrain development Dr. Thomas Casper as saying, "I can't tell you the exact month, but sometime in 2014, perhaps at the end." Casper added that Porsche has no plans to introduce a four-cylinder diesel engine in the Macan, only a petrol. However, despite previous rumors that Porsche may use a turbocharged inline-four engine from the VW Group, the engineer said the engine is expected to be turbocharged and use horizontally opposed pistons. Using a four-cylinder boxer engine would be in line with Porsche's tradition. It will also deliver a distinct sound, which is a big deal as Casper said that how the engine will sound is a "top priority." Despite having only four-cylinders, the engineer mentioned that the Porsche Macan will remain a "proper Porsche", which means it will deliver sufficient power. The 4-cylinder boxer unit will act as the entry-level engine for the Macan and will likely develop under 300 hp while offering the best fuel economy among the Macan's petrol engines. Later on, Porsche will fit the same engine to the Boxster and Cayman as well, which will make them the most affordable Porsche models, starting at around £35,000 (€41,762). The 4-cylinder Macan is expected to start from £40,000 (€47,727). By Dan Mihalascu |
You Just Might Like These London Cops on Bikes Posted: 11 Dec 2013 10:32 AM PST High-end luxury models and rare supercars revving their engines and spitting fire from their pipes under London's moody (and usually rainy) skies is nothing new, nor is the fact that a number of residents don't share the same enthusiasm for rowdy V8 and V12 engines. More often than not, when the police turns up, it's not a laughing matter, at least not for those inside these expensive rides, but once in a while, you get some more light-hearted and understanding cops. And we quote Paul Wallace from SuperCarsofLondon (SOL): "This time we are on a supercar cruise in London, doing what supercars do best! Making noise and enjoying the power! Then we get the police's attention and eventually 2 police bikes want to know what we're up to...They then are keen to show off what they can bring to the supercar party and rev up their engines and show off their blue lights!" Hoons Take Note: New BMW M3 and M4 to Feature Smokey Burnout Function Posted: 11 Dec 2013 09:56 AM PST After reports surfaced about the new 2015 Mustang allegedly sporting a Burnout Control System that will allow drivers to create a perfect cloud of tire smoke, we're now hearing via Top Gear magazine that the newly introduced BMW M3 sedan and M4 Coupe will come with a similar system. We don't have the press release in our hands yet, but TG reported that BMW officials call it the "Smokey Burnout function". There's no word if it's a standard or optional feature, nor how it works – speculation has it that the systems on both the BMW and Ford may lock the front brakes allowing the rear tires to turn like crazy, but between you and me, that doesn't sound like something that would sit well with the warranty departments… We will report on any updates we receive on the matter. Thanks to Kevin from Bimmerpost for the heads up! |
Jay Leno Drives Twin-Engined 2002 Mini Cooper with 500HP Posted: 11 Dec 2013 09:31 AM PST For one owner of a 2002 Mini Cooper, the factory-fitted supercharged 1.6-liter engine wasn't enough, so he added...a second identical engine in the boot of the car. But that wasn't all: each engine was then boosted to produce 250 horsepower, so this double-trouble Mini has…500 horsepower in total and is all-wheel-drive. The car has two transmissions as well which yoke to the same controls in the cockpit, so when the driver shifts the lever, gears change simultaneously. Similarly, when the gas pedal is pressed, both engines accelerate at the same rate. The car is not street-legal and is only used for racing, with the owner, Jacques Andres, aiming to take it endurance racing later this month. This is a mean little racer, as Jay Leno has found out during a short driving session. If you're into mechanical stuff, make sure you watch the video, as the complexity of the project and the ingenuity of its creator will definitely be to your liking. By Dan Mihalascu |
Vilner Goes Into More Picturesque Details of BMW 6-Series Bullshark [50 Photos & Videos] Posted: 11 Dec 2013 09:02 AM PST For a competitively small aftermarket firm like Vilner, creating a uniquely designed project out of an existing car like the E63 BMW 6-Series Coupe-based Bullshark, is understandably, a big deal. Named and styled after the infamous testosterone-filled shark species, Vilner's BMW Bullshark represents a complete overhaul of the Chris Bangle-era (pre-facelift) 645 Ci, with only the roof and the doors remaining unchanged from the donor car. The most eye-catching exterior bits of the Bulgarian design studio's work on the BMW include the sharper looking front end with a pencil-mustache style kidney grille and the Infiniti FX-sourced headlamps, the heavily creased front and rear fender extensions and the side gill design. It's also worth noting that the tail-lamps were taken from the facelifted 6-Series E63, while the coupe rolls on 19-inch wheels with a staggered setup. Stepping in the cabin, you'll discover completely new materials and colors from top to bottom, with Vilner also designing an individual traveling bag for the new owner of the car. For the Bullshark's performance needs, Vilner turned to AC Schnitzer that provided a software kit to lift the 4.4-liter V8 mill's output from 329HP (333PS) to 365HP (370PS) and peak torque to 522Nm (385 lb-ft), which helps improve the 0-100km/h (62mph) sprint time to 5.4 seconds and increase top speed to 278km/h (173mph). |
Vauxhall to Debut New 576 HP Supercharged VXR8 GTS at Autosport Show Posted: 11 Dec 2013 08:32 AM PST If your sole goal as a UK car buyer is to get the most horsepower for under sixty thousand pounds, then you need to look no further than the revised Vauxhall VXR8 GTS, a rebadged Holden HSV with an American engine. Said mill has recently been boosted by an extra 150 horses and now screams to the tune of 576 of them. It's the same supercharged LSA V8 engine as the one used under the bonnet of the recently revealed Camaro ZL1. Starting from £54,999 (US$90,000), it's as it's always been, great value for money (compared to the Germans, of course – i.e. the M5 is priced from £73,505 or US$120,300) and if the plethora of online and owner reviews are right, not bad as a car either. Benchmark sprint time to 62mph (100km/h) is 4.2 seconds, and top speed is limited to 155 mph (250km/h). Keeping everything in check is a Brake-Torque Vectoring system that is said to quell understeer at high speeds, while Magnetic Ride Control with three settings to choose from makes it a better-suited all-rounder. The car's exterior benefits from light cosmetic touchups that are concentrated at the front – there's a new "twin-nostril" grille design plus a new bumper; "twin-kidney" must have been taken… There's also a new diffuser and spoiler combo at the back too – it brings out the LED tail lamps. The cabin has been freshened up as well, and as the manufacturer says "has undergone a raft of design changes." The improvements include a new instrument cluster with new gauges, as well as a revised center stack, door panels and new leather-clad seats that are 8-way electrically-adjustable. The new VXR8 will make its "surprise debut at the Performance Car Show alongside Autosport International next month," with deliveries poised for the first quarter of 2014. By Andrei Nedelea |
Spied: Is This a Facelift Porsche 911, the GTS, Both or Something Different? Posted: 11 Dec 2013 08:02 AM PST We don't need to explain to you why the Porsche 911 series is one of the most difficult cars to decipher when it comes to prototype models, covered or not. Even our experienced spies cannot always put their finger on what Porsche is preparing for the 911, each generation of which has more editions and versions than a Barbie doll. This here 911 is one such example, with the tester featuring the wider rear body of the Carrera 4 along with a revised front bumper sporting new air intakes, covered LED daytime running lights (DRL), a different rear bumper with corner vents and masked tail lights that may or may not be bigger in size than on the regular 991. One theory is that Porsche is working on a facelifted version of the 991-generation model, while another is that, this car may be the rumored GTS edition (current or facelift), which would sit above the Carrera S and under the Turbo models, possibly offering both RWD and AWD configurations. Nonetheless, we wouldn't be surprised if it turns out to be something else. For now and until we gather more intel, take a look at these fresh spy shots in the gallery that follows. Geneva Show-Bound Rinspeed XchangE Concept Redefines the Interior of Driverless Cars Posted: 11 Dec 2013 07:33 AM PST As self-driving cars are being pushed by some non-enthusiasts as a safer and more convenient alternative to traditional vehicles, Switzerland-based design house Rinspeed will reveal a concept car at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show that aims to redefine the role of the "driver's" seat. More specifically, the Rinspeed XchangE concentrates its attention on the occupants of the driverless model. Since the driver will be reduced to a passenger like any other, Rinspeed believes significant changes must be done in the cabin make optimal use of the time gained by the former driver. "So far, hardly anyone has taken this to its logical conclusion from the perspective of the driver. After all, traveling in a driverless car will no longer require me to stare at the road, but will let me spend my time in a more meaningful way," said Rinspeed boss Frank M. Rinderknecht. The company's proposal is a fully electric touring sedan called XchangE, which features all-new seats inspired by the relaxing business-class seats of major airlines, with similar sophisticated functionality. The study also uses a completely new operating and display concept with a series of new entertainment, safety and service functions. According to Rinspeed, these features make it possible to work or relax in particular comfort while riding in the driverless car. A passenger can read, listen to music, surf the web, play games, watch movies or work while the car follows its journey. If it gets in the way, the steering wheel can simply be "parked" in the middle of the dashboard thanks to "steer-by-wire" technology that can also be found on modern jet aircraft. Rinderknecht believes autonomous driving will actually make individual travel more attractive compared to traveling by train, plane or long-distance coach. "I am given free time that I can use for myself anyway I please, while the sensor systems and the computer chauffeur me safely and reliably to my destination," says Rinspeed boss. Driver Gives a Helping Hand to Man-Sized Fallen Penguin Posted: 11 Dec 2013 06:48 AM PST Russian winters are freezing cold and depressing, not to mention very dangerous for anyone travelling outside, be that behind the wheel of an automobile or simply on foot. While no doubt on the odd side of the fence, this scene captured on a dashboard camera shows that not all Russian drivers are like the many tools that frequently make headlines on video-sharing sites. The group of people dressed as giant penguins were crossing the road when one of them stepped on a piece of ice and, well, you know what happens next. Do slide through the break to watch the video in its entirety for yourself. |
Porsche Gives You Data to Create 3D Print of Cayman, Releases Another Macan Video Posted: 11 Dec 2013 06:24 AM PST Prices for 3D printers have been dropping these past few years – just this week, the Michigan Technological University presented an open-source 3D metal printer for $1,500, and automakers have been taking notice. If you already own or have access to these machines that can create three-dimensional solid objects using successive layers of materials, Porsche has released 3D printing data for its Cayman S sports coupe, which you can download on the German brand's official site here. Speaking of Porsche, while looking at the brand's YouTube page, we found a new video of the Macan that focuses on the luxury compact crossover's chassis and suspension components. Watch both of them right below the virtual break. |
It’s Official: GM's Holden to Stop Making Cars in Australia in 2017, 2,900 Direct Jobs Will Be Lost Posted: 11 Dec 2013 06:00 AM PST Following Ford's announcement earlier this year that it will end Australian production in 2016, the country's other major car manufacturer, General Motors' owned Holden, said it will stop making cars Down Under - despite initially denying rumors that it would proceed to such a move. The carmaker said it would "transition to a national sales company in Australia and New Zealand as part of its ongoing actions to decisively address the performance of its global operations". The company noted that it would discontinue vehicle and engine manufacturing and significantly reduce its engineering operations in Australia by the end of 2017. "The decision to end manufacturing in Australia reflects the perfect storm of negative influences the automotive industry faces in the country, including the sustained strength of the Australian dollar, high cost of production, small domestic market and arguably the most competitive and fragmented auto market in the world," explained GM Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson, who plans to retire next year. Approximately 2,900 people will lose their jobs over the next four years as a result of GM's decision, including 1,600 from the Elizabeth vehicle manufacturing plant and approximately 1,300 from Holden's Victorian workforce. Nevertheless, the Holden brand will continue to exist in Australia beyond 2017 and the sale and service of Holden vehicles will be made through the carmaker's dealers across Australia and New Zealand. Warranty terms and spare parts availability will remain unchanged as well. However, GM didn't say where it will manufacture Holden vehicles that are now made in Australia. GM will continue to be present in Australia through a national sales company, a national parts distribution center and a global design studio. Since 2001, the Australian dollar has risen from US$0.50 to as high as $1.10 compared to the USD. Because of the appreciation of the currency alone, manufacturing in Australia at the local currency's peak was 65 percent more expensive compared to just a decade earlier, GM said. As it stands, Toyota will be the only car-making company in Australia after 2017, but that may soon change… By Dan Mihalascu Thanks to all our tipsters! |
Original BMW M3 E30 Meets the All-New M4 Coupe, Plus Preliminary Specs Posted: 11 Dec 2013 05:40 AM PST As it turns out, the first official photos of the 2014 generation BMW M3 sedan and M4 Coupe aren't the only things leaked about the high-performance cars. A search on YouTube revealed that German magazine Autobild has also shared a video with footage of the M4 and its original predecessor, the M3 E30 (1985-1992), while also releasing final specs on the new model. You can see the footage below, but in regards to the M4's new twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter straight six, it is said to be rated at 425hp (431PS) and 550Nm (406 lb-ft), with 400Nm (295 lb-ft) readily available from 3,900 rpm. There are two 0-100km/h (62mph) times listed on the German publication's site and video, at 4.1 and 4.3 seconds, which we assume are for the optional seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission and the standard six-speed manual gearbox respectively (we'll be sure when BMW comes out with the official release). |
