Audi Quattro Could Get 2.5-Liter Five-Pot in Production Trim, Says Report

Posted: 14 Dec 2013 01:42 PM PST

German magazine Auto Motor und Sport posted a report that centered on Audi's CEO Rupert Stadler's explanation for the creation of the Sport Quattro Concept and its possible migration into the realm of production.

The concept was apparently created to gauge opinions and see whether people would be willing to spend their own money to buy it, because, after all, it's what it all boils down to each time…

Moreover, the report also hints that if the green light is received, then power for the production Quattro could come from a 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine (like the original 2010 Quattro Concept), and not the V8/electric motor combo of the second show car.

Power is estimated at between 340 and 360 hp, so it's around half that of the yellow car (which already looked close to being a production model, anyway).

This is good news from Audi, and a chance to let its hair down, create and sell something more quirky than their usual crop of sameness. Too bad it won't necessarily be a nimble sports car, if it follows this new concept and not the first one they showed – a more enthusiast-focused version of the same basic idea.

Jay Leno Tries Out Own 1,076-HP Oldsmobile Toronado in GT6

Posted: 14 Dec 2013 10:18 AM PST

One of Jay Leno's most absurdly-interesting modified cars is a 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado that originally came with front-wheel drive and around 400 hp. Leno lifted the body from the chassis, then made a new one with rear-wheel drive and lowered the shell back onto it.

With the swap also came a new 1,076 hp engine based on the one used in the Cadillac CTS-V racing program, employing the use of its aluminum block and cylinder head plus two turbochargers and an intercooler for good measure.

The car was so impressive to two of the Gran Turismo developers that came to the garage to check out the collection, so much so that they recreated it in the new game – even GT creator Kazunori Yamauchi had a fondness for it and spoke of its capabilities.

Check all of that out, with Leno as the narrator, then watch him drive the digitalized Toronado in the game and make remarks about its realism and handling.

2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Reveals Itself in Magazine and Video Scans

Posted: 14 Dec 2013 08:41 AM PST

Tipped to make its official online debut on December 16, the new 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class has been leaked again, twice, in fact. From the Czech Republic and Autoforum, we have a plethora of video shots, while Carscoops' reader "C" got hold of the February 2014 issue of the UK's "WhatCar?" magazine that details the new sedan and he kindly sent us a print screen.

The article confirms that the new W205-codenamed C-Class has grown considerably over the current W204 to improve its passenger and luggage space offerings over the BMW 3-Series and Audi A4 models, as well as to distance itself from the CLA.

In particular, it has an 80mm (3.14 inches) longer wheelbase at 2,840mm (111.8 inches) while overall, it is 100mm (3.94 inches) longer at 4,690mm (184.6 inches) and 40mm (1.57 inches) wider than the car it replaces. It's also 60mm (2.36 inches) longer than the rivaling 3-Series sedan.

Based on Merc's new MRA (Modular Rear-drive Architecture) that will also underpin the next GLK, the new C-Class is up to around 100kg or 220 pounds lighter than the outgoing W204.

The exterior styling is a mix of S-Class elegance and soberness, with a touch of the CLA's sportier design, while the interior is a welcome upgrade over the previous model with a more modern feel.

In European guise, the car will be released next year with an initial choice of three units, including a 155hp (157PS) 1.6-liter turbo petrol for the C180, a 183hp (186PS) 2.0-liter turbo petrol for the C200 and a 168hp (170PS) 2.2-liter turbo diesel in the C220 CDi.

As pointed out in the magazine article, more engines will be added to the range, including a C300 Hybrid emitting "less than 100g/km of CO2", while it's mentioned that a nine-speed automatic transmission is in the works and will be released in mid-2015.

New BMW M4 Sounds Like a Hacksaw in GT6 – Looks Good, Though

Posted: 14 Dec 2013 07:46 AM PST

Gran Turismo 6 players now have the chance to drive the all-new BMW M4, a car that was exclusively released for the game on Thursday.

You can get it in the form of a free download, if you complete a certain time trial event, and change its color to suit your taste. Modification options are available, though they don't let you tinker with the forced induction, advanced suspension settings or the paint after you've acquired the car.

However, to my ears, it does not sound like BMW would really want it to, having no real depth or bass to the engine note, bringing to mind the kind of cutting machinery mentioned in the title.

It is better than others I've seen (and or heard), but it's not a gratifying noise by any means – it may also be the car that's now turbocharged and hence quieter and more muted; absent is the bark of the E46 M3

Check out the M4 being driven in a variety of gameplay videos posted after the virtual jump.
