Drifting on Public Roads Becomes Criminal Offense in Saudi Arabia

Posted: 11 Jan 2014 02:28 PM PST

Drifting on the wide roads of the Middle East is very popular, and while it may be spectacular to watch when it goes right, it ever so often doesn't and people die. That's why the country suffering most, Saudi Arabia, is passing new laws to try and control it, by making it a criminal offense, whereas before it was considered a traffic violation.

According to ArabNews, the finishing touches are now being put on the actual text supporting the new rules, meaning that all who are caught doing it for the first time will face trial and confiscation of the vehicle for a month, plus a fine of around $2,700 (€2,000).

Second-timers' punishment is naturally more severe and will see their car impounded for three months, the fine doubled and some jail time (for up to 1 year). Let them catch you again and its value doubles yet again, on top of the 1 to 5 years now also thrown in.

Passengers and spectators will not escape blame, and if apprehended will be asked to hand in $400 (€300) or their car for a period of 15 days.

Scroll down and check out the videos below – this is what the new laws are meant to prevent, if you are not familiar…

Any Idea Which Detroit Motor Show Debut is Teased Here?

Posted: 11 Jan 2014 11:35 AM PST

After last night's pop quiz, the guessing game on which Detroit Motor Show debut is previewed through an unnamed picture continues with the cropped shot you see above.

Once again, it comes to us from spy shooter Chris Doane, who won't share the name of the world premiere, leaving us to find out which one it could be.

The chrome trim accent on the lower portion of the bumper eliminates any sport or regular sedan entry, while the fog lights look like what you expect to see on a production car.

If you want us to be more specific, we're thinking it's an SUV or a pickup truck, but go ahead and tell us what you believe it is in the comments area.

Official Photos of New 2015 Corvette Stingray Z06 Surface Online

Posted: 11 Jan 2014 10:32 AM PST

Ladies and gents, we have the first official imagery of the highly anticipated 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 that hit the web ahead of the performance model's world premiere at the 2014 Detroit motor Show on Monday.

It's a very aggressive styling take over the regular Stingray with a multitude of aero bits ranging from front lip spoiler that connects to new front wheel arch extensions, protruding side skirts, a rear deck lid spoiler.

The rear fenders also seem wider and now host air vents in front of the wheels, while other cues we spotted is the blacked out hood scoop section, a new front grille, smoked headlamps, bigger alloy wheels finished in black.

A quick look inside reveals some trim changes and a flat-bottom steering wheel, while the Z06 will no doubt get the just announced Performance Data Recorder.

As mentioned in an earlier post, the Z06 will get its grunt from a new supercharged V8 that will deliver 620 horsepower and 650 lb.-ft. of torque (or possibly even more, according to some new sources).

Posted: 11 Jan 2014 08:47 AM PST

Japanese tuning firm 3D Design chose the 2014 Tokyo Auto Salon for the grand premiere of its new M-Sport kit for the BMW 4-Series coupe.

Leaving aside the optionally available stripes, 3D Design's program dresses the M Sport version of the Bavarian two-door model with a urethane or carbon fiber front lip, optional carbon fiber lower splitters, urethane trunk spoiler, and carbon fiber rear diffuser.

It also offers a quad tip sport exhaust system built by Arqray Japan, and a choice of alloy wheels, which on the display model, were wrapped in Yokohama rubber.

3D Design said the official release of the kit is scheduled for the third week of January and will be available in the States through IND Distribution.

After the jump, you'll find photos of the 4-Series as well as other tuned BMW models at 3D Design's Tokyo Auto Salon stand.

Aussie Makes Air-Powered Hotrod Entirely out of LEGO Blocks

Posted: 11 Jan 2014 06:55 AM PST

Lego is a great way for young minds to shape themselves in the spirit of building technical things that work, and for older ones to show off what can be done with mere blocks, if it's not just kids that you let loose on them. Take this man from Melbourne, Australia, who put together a full-sized hot rod made entirely out of the interchangeable pieces – no fewer than 500,000 of them were used to complete it.

Steve Sammartino is his name and his black and yellow creation can be seen in the video posted below; the help of Raul Onaida, a self-taught Romanian teen tech genius was invaluable, though - the two met online...

It uses an actual working engine that's also made from Legos, and has 256 working pistons that are driven by compressed air. The vehicle is capable of speeds no faster than 18 mph (29 km/h), but its creators' goal was more in the realm of it being "proof of concept for environmentally-friendly equipment."

The entire build cost $18,300 or €13,400, and it was founded by over 40 willing patrons who chipped in. All we care about is how cool it looks when it's actually in motion, with the 256 cylinders doing their bit to push it forward.
