| Ford's Lighter and More Efficient All-New 2015 F-150 Officially Revealed [w/Video] Posted: 13 Jan 2014 03:51 AM PST  Having had its look previewed by the Atlas concept, it was the technical side, the interior and other production model details that we were waiting for from Ford's presence at the North American International Auto Show 2014, where they will soon reveal the all-new F-150 pickup truck. They call it "the toughest, smartest and most capable F-150 ever." Weighing up to 700 lbs (~320 kg) less than the outgoing model, it rides on an all-new steel frame on top of which sits the high-strength aluminum-alloy body. There's also a new 2.7-liter EcoBoost engine on offer that "features a lightweight, compact design to deliver the same power as some mid-range V8s." It comes with Auto Start-Stop as standard and completes the range comprised of the 3.5-liter naturally aspirated V6, the EcoBoost 3.5-liter V6 and the 5.0-liter V8 – turbocharged models get active grille shutters that maximize either cooling or aerodynamic efficiency. New tech is also on offer: 360-degree camera view, integrated loading ramps, LED headlights and tail lamps, trailer hitch assist, smart trailer tow module, in-cab high-wattage power outlets (400W, 110V) and a next-gen tailgate step "which is now fully integrated inside the tailgate and virtually invisible when not in use." The passenger compartment has been updated too, with a new modern design complimented by modern touches such as the 8-inch "productivity screen" located in the instrument panel – it can be customized to show a variety of relevant parameters and/or grant access to frequently used functions/apps too. SYNC with MyFord Touch, hill start assist, MyKey, rear view camera, reverse sensing, trailer brake controller and extendable tailgate step complete the list of tech features. Safety is another area where the new F-150 is more advanced than its predecessor. It has second-row inflatable seatbelts, Curve Control (helps in high-speed cornering), radar-guided adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist. | Retro-Inspired Porsche 911 Targa Leaks ahead of Detroit Debut Posted: 13 Jan 2014 03:33 AM PST  As you probably know, Porsche will unveil the 911 Targa at the Detroit Auto Show later today, with the new model tipped to pay homage to the original 911 Targa of the 1960s. The first leaked official photos confirm this approach, as the car features a folding soft top replacing the previous model's glass roof that slid under the rear window, a thick B-pillar in brushed aluminum look and a wraparound glass rear window very similar to that of the original 911 Targa. As usual, the 911 Targa will appeal to those customers who want something halfway between the 911 Cabriolet and the coupe. The new 991-based Porsche 911 Targa is expected to offer two engine choices, a base 345hp 3.4-liter flat six and a more powerful 395hp 3.6-liter unit in "S" guise. It's uncertain whether the new model will be offered only with four-wheel drive as the previous 997 model or if it will be available with rear-wheel drive as well. | First Official Photos of Kia’s GT4 Stinger Concept Leak on the Web Posted: 13 Jan 2014 03:21 AM PST  Following a series of teaser skecthes released by Kia itself, the first official images of the GT4 Stinger 2+2 concept surfaced online. The leaked photos reveal a bold design, especially at the front end thanks to the aggressive, low-mounted vertical LED headlights. The study features an "Ignition Yellow" paint that highlights the car's sculpted body, with the most striking details being the pronounced wheel arches and the rear end, which accommodates a large glass tailgate. The profile of the car may remind some of the Audi Sport Quattro concept, as the GT4 Stinger also adopts the shooting brake solution. Set to be revealed later today at the Detroit Auto Show, the Kia GT4 Stinger is 2+2 coupe study powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline direct injected (T-GDI) four-cylinder engine producing 315 horsepower. The unit is mated to close-ratio six-speed manual transmission that directs power to the rear wheels. The study features a custom chassis with an independent double wishbone suspension and rides on 20-inch aluminum center-lock wheels with carbon fiber inserts for strength and weight reduction. Stopping power is ensured by Brembo Gran Tourismo two-piece cross-drilled rotors with four-piston calipers. While Kia is mum about the future of the study, I can't help but think that a production version of the GT4 Stinger would make an interesting rival for the Toyota GT86/Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ trio of RWD coupes. | Chris Harris Finds Reason and Substance in Chevrolet’s Volt Proposition Posted: 12 Jan 2014 01:45 PM PST  With 23,094 vehicles sold through 2013 and sustained growth for most of the year, the Chevrolet Volt has clearly won a few people on its side, and their numbers will continue to increase. Chris Harris is now among those for whom 38 miles (61 km) of all electric driving and a 1.4-liter engine that doesn't power the wheels make sense, as you'll notice once you've started playing the video posted below. Harris makes a good case for the Volt, and in the context he puts forward, it really does sound like it could work. He even points to colleague Matt Farah who's been running one for the last three months, and says it's an experience which has also turned him into a fan. This video review is a little late to the party, as it comes some time after the Chevy was launched, but it's nonetheless welcome if for instance you were already considering buying one, and needed one final motivational push before going to the showroom and taking a test drive. | 2015 Audi TT Coupe Rendered with Details from Allroad Shooting Brake Concept Posted: 12 Jan 2014 10:37 AM PST  The first thing we noticed about Audi's new 2014 Detroit motor show-bound Allroad Shooting Brake Concept upon seeing the press shots was how close the exterior and interior are to the upcoming, third generation TT. Even though Audi didn't say it outright, the Germans did mention that the two-door crossover provides a "concrete look into the near future". We saw the production cabin of the next TT at the CES in Las Vegas last week and while we patiently wait for Audi to fully release the car at a major international auto show this year, Hungarian designer X-Tomi cooked up a quick render of what the coupe may look like, based on the knowledge we obtained from the Detroit concept. | SRT Viper Slithers to Detroit with New Stryker Green Color, GT Package and Prototype Aero Kit Posted: 12 Jan 2014 10:04 AM PST  At the Detroit motor show, SRT will introduce a new and rather eye-popping shade for the latest Viper named Stryker Green, which is claimed to be an evolution of the Snakeskin Green exterior color that first appeared in 2008 with "enhanced green and yellow pigments and a 'liquid mercury' appearance," according to the automaker. That's not the only news for the 2014MY Viper from Detroit, as SRT will also debut the Grand Touring (GT) special package with standard Nappa leather seats, five-mode Electronic Stability Control and the two-mode Bilstein DampTronic Select suspension, both of which were previously available exclusively with the Viper GTS. SRT said the GT option package will be limited to the new Stryker Green and Venom Black exterior colors. Finally, the Stryker Green display model with the GT package on show in Detroit (seen in these press photos) is fitted with a prototype aero package featuring a Mopar carbon fiber rear wing and extended front corner splitters.          |
| Official: Audi’s Allroad Shooting Brake Concept Features 402HP Hybrid Powertrain Posted: 12 Jan 2014 09:50 AM PST  Audi has officially lifted the veils off its Detroit Auto Show concept car, the Allroad Shooting Brake. While the carmaker hasn't released additional photos to those featured in our earlier story, it has revealed full technical details about the car. The crossover features a hybrid powertrain mated to an all-wheel-drive system, called the e-Tron Quattro. The hybrid system consists of a 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine producing 288 hp and 380 Nm (280 lb-ft) of torque and two electric motors. A disc-shaped motor with 40kW (54 hp) and 270 Nm (199 lb-ft) is linked to the petrol engine via a decoupling clutch and is integrated in the six-speed e-S tronic gearbox. The second electric motor is mounted on the rear axle and is separated from the drive unit. With a maximum power of 85kW (114hp) and 270 Nm (199 lb-ft) of torque, the motor supplies propulsive power at low and moderate vehicle speeds, as well as when the hybrid management system decides that all-wheel drive is necessary. Finally, an 8.8 kWh lithium-ion battery consisting of eight modules located just forward of the rear axle allows for 50 km (31 miles) of all-electric driving. Thanks to a total system output of 402 hp (408PS) and 650 Nm (479 lb-ft) of torque, the Audi Allroad Shooting Brake can hit 100 km/h (62 mph) from a standstill in 4.6 seconds and has an electronically-limited top speed of 250 km/h. Fuel economy is rated at 1.9 l/100 km (123.8 mpg US) according to the ECE standard. Total driving range is up to 820 km (509 miles). The Allroad Shooting Brake is 4,200mm (165 in) long, 1,850mm (73 in) wide and 1,410mm (55.5 in) tall, with a wheelbase of 2,510mm (99 in). Audi says the study combines visual elements of future sports car models (most likely the TT) with the Allroad concept and shooting brake car body form. | VW Beetle Dune Concept Bows to the Web with Official Photos, Likely Heading for Production Posted: 12 Jan 2014 09:42 AM PST  Volkswagen is revisiting an idea from January 2000, when it presented the New Beetle Dune concept in Los Angeles, with a similarly themed concept car at next week's 2014 Detroit motor Show, but you won't have to wait until tomorrow to see it as more than a dozen photos surfaced online today. The new Beetle Dune Concept for a taller-riding and tougher looking version of the retro-inspired compact is very close to production, something that the company itself admits. In the press release VW stated that while the 2000 concept "was far from a production possibility, the Beetle Dune is very much based on the current production model, using the same 210PS [207hp] turbocharged petrol engine and six-speed DSG gearbox, providing power to the front wheels." | 2015 GMC Canyon Combines Sierra Looks with Colorado Underpinnings, Diesel Confirmed Posted: 12 Jan 2014 09:21 AM PST  After Chevrolet unveiled the 2015 Colorado at the LA Auto Show, it is now time for its GMC alter ego, the 2015 Canyon, to see the limelight at the Detroit Auto Show. The new midsize truck adopts a similar face to the 2015 GMC Sierra and offers the segment's most powerful engine (the optional 302hp 3.6-liter V6 unit), best payload (at least 1,450 lbs/657kg) and best maximum trailering rating (at least 6,700 lbs/3,039 kg). The 2015 GMC Canyon will come equipped with a standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 193 horsepower and 184 lb-ft (253 Nm) of torque, with approximately 90 percent of the peak torque available from 2,000 rpm to 6,200 rpm. The 3.6-liter engine is estimated at 302 horsepower and 270 lb-ft (366 Nm) of torque. Beginning with the 2016 model year, the Canyon will also be available with a 2.8-liter turbodiesel. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard on all models, with GMC offering an optional six-speed manual with the 2.5-liter engine in base extended cab/2WD models. Available with three body configurations (extended cab with a 6-ft/1.82m bed, crew cab with 5-ft/1.5m bed and crew cab with 6-ft/1.82m bed) the 2015 GMC Canyon also offers the choice of four-wheel drive. There are three trim levels, base, SLE and SLT, with an optional All-Terrain package offered on SLE models. The package includes 17-inch painted aluminum wheels covered by all-terrain tires, a body-color grille surround with horizontal chrome bars and specific suspension tuning. The close relationship with the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado is more obvious when looking at the interior, which is roughly the same as its sibling's. The All-Terrain package features exclusive color and trim details, including embossed seatbacks and unique contrast stitching.
