2015 Ford Mustang to Make Silver Screen Debut on Need for Speed Movie, See the Video

Posted: 13 Jan 2014 06:15 PM PST

Like they say in Hollywood, "Lights, camera, promo!". Oh, wait; that should be action, but you get where we're going with this drift…

While the badass looking fifth-generation Mustang Shelby GT500 will take on the star automotive role in DreamWorks Pictures' "Need for Speed" movie, it will be joined by the all-new 2015 Mustang that will make a cameo appearance in the film that hits theaters March 14.

This will mark the new Mustang's big-screen debut before it goes on sale this fall, and possibly kick off more movie and television promotions.

Ford's connection with the Need for Speed franchise extends to the game as well, as players already have access to virtual drives of the 2015 Mustang, which became available as a free in-game download in EA's "Need for Speed Rivals" in December.

Do You Think a TT Shooting Brake Crossover is a Good or a Bad Idea?

Posted: 13 Jan 2014 05:42 PM PST

As with many automotive press releases these days, there's a lot of mumbo jumbo coming out of Audi about its new Allroad Shooting Brake Concept that's on display at the Detroit auto show, but it all boils down to this: this is a study for a shooting brake-bodied version of the next TT with a crossover flair.

If you remove the "Allroad" elements and swap the top for a swoopy coupe roofline, what's left is pretty much the new generation TT that will be released later this year.

The VW Group in general, has been toying around with the idea of a coupe or coupe-ish sporty crossover for quite some time now – the Audi Nanuk Quattro and Italdesign Parkour concepts are the most recent, though, both were far more extreme than the Allroad Shooting Brake seen here.

So, what would you say to a production variant closely based on this concept; is there any point to a vehicle like this?

All-New 2015 F-150 and Mustang Share the Limelight at Ford's Detroit Motor Show Booth

Posted: 13 Jan 2014 05:20 PM PST

Ford rolled out the successors to two of the most important nameplates in its portfolio at the Detroit auto show today, the 2015MY F-150 pickup truck and the 2015MY Mustang. The former is the Blue Oval's bestseller in the United States for the past 37 years, and the latter is the brand's most famous car worldwide.

Starting with the F-150, the new model carries over many of the design and tech features seen on last year's Atlas concept. Ford says that while it's bigger and tougher than ever, the new model is also 700lbs (~320 kg) lighter and more fuel efficient thanks to the use of lightweight materials, including a high-strength aluminum-alloy body.

The new Mustang needs no introduction as Ford made sure we knew most things about the sixth generation of its sports car series several weeks before the Detroit event.

Also on display is a very different Ford from another era, yet with a familiar pony emblem positioned on its fenders and front and rear ends, the 1 Concept.

2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Makes Stylish Entry at the Detroit Auto Show

Posted: 13 Jan 2014 04:04 PM PST

We've known all about the all-new Mercedes-Benz C-Class for nearly a month now, but the actual world debut of the car took place at the Detroit Auto Show, where the carmaker staged a special event featuring former Destiny's Child member Kelly Rowland.

As we've already dissected the design of the 2015 C-Class, we'll focus on the main technical highlights of the car. Although the new C-Class is larger, it is also up to 100 kg (220 lbs) lighter than the outgoing model, thanks to the aluminum hybrid body, with fuel consumption dropping by up to 20 percent.

In the U.S., the new C-Class will be available from September 2014 with two gasoline powertrains: the C 300 4MATIC with a 2.0-liter turbocharged direct-injection in-line four-cylinder engine producing 235 hp and 273 lb-ft (370 Nm) of torque and a C 400 4MATIC with a 3.0-liter turbocharged direct-injection V6 churning out 329 hp and 354 lb-ft (480 Nm) of torque.

In Europe, the C-Class will launch with three engine variants: a diesel (C 220 BlueTEC) and two petrol models (C 180 and C 200). The 2.1-liter diesel produces 168 hp (170PS) and is the most economical, averaging 4 l/100 km (58.8 mpg US). The C 180 features a 154hp (156PS) 1.6-liter engine that returns 5 l/100 km (47 mpg US), while the C 200 has a 2.0-liter unit producing 181 hp (184PS) and averaging 5.3 l/100 km (44.4 mpg US). The C200 is the fastest of these three models, sprinting from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 7.5 seconds.

Soon after the market launch, Mercedes will roll out new diesel engines, including a small 1.6-liter unit with either 114hp (115PS) or 134 hp (136hp), as well as more versions of the 2.1-liter engine with up to 201 hp (204PS).

Five four-cylinder petrol engines rated at 154hp (156PS) to 235hp (238PS) will also be available, including the special C 180 ECO Edition model. A six-cylinder petrol engine rated at 329 hp (333PS) will follow later, as well as the C 300 BlueTEC Hybrid pairing the 201hp 2.1-liter diesel with a 20kW (27hp) electric motor for an average fuel consumption of 3.9 l/100 km (60.3 mpg US).

Four-cylinder engines are mated as standard to 6-speed manual transmissions, with the 7G-Tronic Plus automatic gearbox offered as optional.

The C-Class is available to order in Germany from €33,558 ($46,200) for the entry-level C 180. The C 200 starts from €36,414 ($50,090), while the C 220 BlueTEC is priced from €38,675 ($53,250). U.S. prices have yet to be announced.

All-New 2015 Hyundai Genesis Lands in Detroit [77 Photos & Video]

Posted: 13 Jan 2014 03:25 PM PST

A couple of months after the Korean debut of the new generation Genesis, Hyundai unveiled the U.S. market model at the Detroit Auto Show. The RWD executive sedan is the first Hyundai to feature the brand's Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 design language.

The exterior highlights of the car are the hexagonal front grille, dynamic character line running along the flanks of the car, and the sporty rear end design.

With an overall length of 4,990mm (196.5in), width of 1,890mm (74.4in) and height of 1,480mm (58.2in), the Genesis is slightly longer (+4mm) and taller (+5mm) than its predecessor. The wheelbase has been extended by 75mm (2.95in) to 3,010mm (118.5in), increasing cabin space, especially on the back seat.

The 2015MY Genesis will be offered with two gasoline engines in the U.S., a 3.8-liter V6 and a 5.0-liter V8 engine. Both have been upgraded, offering better low-mid torque and improved performance compared with the outgoing model.

The V6 produces 311 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 293 lb-ft (397 Nm) of torque at 5,000 rpm. The V8 is the most powerful, delivering 420hp at 6,000 rpm and 383 lb-ft (519 Nm) of torque, with the 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) sprint taking 5.4 seconds. Both powerplants are linked to an 8-speed automatic transmission.

The 2015 Hyundai Genesis is available for the first time with the HTRAC AWD system and features a new multi-link rear suspension for improved comfort.

As you would expect, Hyundai's new offerings is loaded with technologies, including CO2 cabin sensor control, Google Glass connectivity, Google-powered second generation Blue Link Technology telematics, as well as safety features such as Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), Blind Spot Detection system with integrated Head-Up Display and radar-controlled Advanced Smart Cruise Control.

The new Genesis will be built at Hyundai's Ulsan, Korea plant, with U.S. sales beginning in the spring.

New Mini John Cooper Works is Anything But a Concept

Posted: 13 Jan 2014 03:13 PM PST

Who knows what the BMW Group thinks it achieves by labeling 99 percent production-ready cars as studies, but it is what it is and we're seeing it again at the 2014 Detroit motor show with the new Mini John Cooper Works Concept.

A study only in the name, the John Cooper Works (JCW) edition builds on the latest generation Mini Hatch we saw at the Los Angeles and Tokyo motor shows in November of 2013 and it previews the production car set for release within the next year.

Mini isn't talking about the powertrain in the JCW, but it is believed that it will use a tuned version of the new 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine found in the Cooper S, where it delivers 189HP (192PS) – so expect the JCW to have well over 200 ponies.

As the top dog in the hatchback's range, the JCW looks the part with an aggressive aero-makeover that includes different bumpers with air-ducts, a rear diffuser, side skirts, roof spoiler, trim accents, plus different 18-inch wheels.

New Chrysler 200 Live Shots from Detroit, Plus Consumer Reports’ Quick Video Take

Posted: 13 Jan 2014 04:34 PM PST

Consumer Reports had a good look around the all-new 2015 Chrysler 200 whilst it was being displayed at the manufacturer's Detroit motor show stand. It is a car that really had to be much better than its predecessor in every way, as it enters a class full of talented mid-sized rivals.

The new design is a welcome change from the old car that had awkward proportions with overhangs that were far too long to be pretty. Inside it also looks like a lot of progress has been made, and despite being similar to the smaller Dodge Dart, its extra space will surely be pleasing. However, that room is not class leading according to the video.

Engines-wise, the range is rather limited, with the 2.4-liter and 3.6-liter variants being the only choices. One plus point is that you can get the larger unit with all-wheel drive.

Check out CR's quick video take of the car along with a set of photos from the show right after the virtual jump.

New Nissan Sport Sedan Concept May be the Maxima You Want, But Will You Get It? [w/Video]

Posted: 13 Jan 2014 05:52 PM PST

The new Nissan Sport Sedan Concept is one of the most impressive world premieres at the 2014 Detroit motor show, and while we are aware of the first question that will come to mind upon seeing the pictures – whether it previews the next generation Maxima, we can't give you a straight answer (yet), and we'll explain why.

Nissan never mentioned the word "Maxima" in the press blurb, but it does say that the study applies "real sports car performance standards and new design philosophies to a 4-door sedan", and that it "previews a future production vehicle intended for owners with a passion for cutting-edge design and driving dynamics".

It's also very close in dimensions to the current Maxima at 191.7 in. (4,870 mm) long, 75.3 in. (1,912 mm) wide, 54.3 in. (1,378 mm) tall, with a wheelbase of 111.2 in. (2,825 mm) – to be precise, it's a hair bigger in all directions but height.

All told, and unless Nissan has plans for a second big sedan with a sportier orientation, we think that the concept either very loosely or directly hints at the Maxima's replacement – hopefully, it's the former.

Besides talking plenty about the design, Nissan mentions that the study comes with a retuned version of its 3.5-liter V6 producing more than 300-horses backed by a sport-tuned Xtronic CVT driving the front wheels (21-inch all around), and that the car "features an innovative suspension layout with performance dampers".

Have a look at the photos below and give us your impressions of the concept in the comments.

Kia GT4 Stinger Concept Shows its "Totally Selfish Design" in Detroit [w/Video]

Posted: 13 Jan 2014 03:39 PM PST

Kia has unveiled the GT4 Stinger Concept at the Detroit Auto Show today, with the RWD coupe billed as "the brand's most aggressive concept car ever". Designed by Kia's California design team that was also responsible for the Track'ster concept, the GT4 Stinger provides "a possible and highly provocative glimpse into Kia's future", according to the Korean company.

With the designers and engineers focusing on weight reduction, functionality and pure driving enjoyment, the study is powered by a tuned version of Kia's 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline direct injected (T-GDI) four-cylinder engine producing 315 horsepower.

The unit is mated to a close-ratio six-speed manual transmission that sends power to the rear wheels, which are shod with 275/35R-20 Pirelli P-Zero performance tires. The front wheels are narrower - 235/35R-20. The custom 20-inch aluminum center-lock wheels feature carbon fiber inserts for strength and weight reduction, while stopping power is ensured by Brembo Gran Turismo two-piece 15-inch cross-drilled rotors and four-piston calipers.

Built on a custom chassis with independent double wishbone suspension, the coupe sports aggressive proportions: it's shorter (169.7 inches/4,310mm) than a Forte sedan, wider (74.4 inches/1,890mm) than a Cadenza, and almost 9 inches (22.8mm) lower than a Rio subcompact (49.2 inches/1,250mm),

The GT4 Stinger weighs 2,874 pounds (1,304 kg), with the weight distribution (52 percent front/48 percent rear) favoring sporty handling. No performance figures were revealed.

On the outside, the car's front end is dominated by the latest iteration of the signature Kia grille and the vertical LED headlights, while the long hood features two chrome accent pieces. Interestingly, the study features transparent A-pillars that provide a more than 270-degree view from the driver's seat. On both sides, the GT4 Stinger sports satin black accent pieces with integrated functional cooling ducts for the rear brakes. At the rear, the glass hatch continued by a blacked-out panel is the most striking detail.

The equally sporty interior features red-stitched pull straps, bucket seats, billet-aluminum pedals, flat-bottomed steering wheel and a red LED-illuminated instrument panel with large tachometer and gear indicator. There's no stereo inside the car, nor a floor carpet - only a rubber floor mat underneath the pedals.

Kia says there are no current plans for a production version of the GT4 Stinger, but doesn't rule it out in the future. Kia Design Center America (KDCA) chief Tom Kearns describes the GT4 Stinger as a "totally selfish design," adding that it's the perfect car for gearheads and enthusiasts.

Honda Reveals New US-Spec 2015 Fit in Detroit, will be Made in Mexico

Posted: 13 Jan 2014 03:36 PM PST

Honda just pulled the veils off their all-new 2015 Fit, and not only did they fall with ease around its distinctly tapered flanks, but they revealed the exact same car we saw back in July of 2013 when the Jazz debuted in Japan. However, that car will be built much closer to its home market, whereas the Fit will roll off the brand new production line in Celaya, Mexico (at a planned rate of 200,000 per year).

Slightly shorter, but with a longer wheelbase, the new Fit promises improved handling, maneuverability and interior space at the same time, plus the added aesthetic benefit of having the wheels closer to the corners of the body.

Despite looking much more modern than the outgoing model, it's definitely still recognizable as a Fit, and in black it looks properly mean – that could not have been said before, regardless of the color you had it in…

The interior is a direct carryover, with the obligatory swap from right- to left-hand drive. Tech features now available include a multi-angle rear view camera, a moonroof, heated front seats, LaneWatch and the industry-standard seven-inch touchscreen infotainment unit with Bluetooth connectivity and soft touch plastics to cover them all (at least on the top of the dash). One last option that is worth mentioning, since it is a first for the model, are the new leather seats.

The only engine offered at first is the 1.5-liter 130 hp i-VTEC unit (13 hp more than before) which can either be paired to a "slick-shifting" six-speed manual or a continuously variable transmission that comes with paddle shifters – it returns a claimed 36 mpg US (42 mpg UK or 6.5 l/100km) on average.

Safety-wise, it's "anticipated to earn top safety scores from NHTSA and IIHS, including a NCAP 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score and a TOP SAFETY PICK rating with a GOOD rating in all IIHS test modes, including the rigorous small overlap barrier test," according to the automaker.

The official US launch is set to take place this spring and is bound to come with more details and news on the other powertrains, including the hybrid which comes with a (unique) seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.

New BMW M3 Sedan and M4 Coupe Live from Detroit

Posted: 13 Jan 2014 01:05 PM PST

If you find the Austin Yellow-hued M4 Coupe and the Yas Marina Blue M3 sedan a bit too vibrant for your color taste buds, then how about the more traditional Black Sapphire M4 Coupe that's also on display at BMW's Detroit motor show booth?

Both the M3 sedan and M4 Coupe are making their world premiere at America's automobile capital as BMW prepares for their launch this spring at, as of yet, undisclosed prices.

Whichever one you choose, regardless of the name and the number of doors, you'll be treated to a new 3.0-liter straight-six turbo engine spitting out 425hp (431PS) from 5,500rpm to 7,300rpm and peak torque of 550Nm (406 lb-ft) between 1,850rpm and 5,500rpm.

BMW says that the M3 and M4 are approximately 80kg (176 lbs) lighter than the respective versions of the previous M3 series, with both models reaching 100km/h (62mph) in 4.1 seconds when fitted with the DCT dual clutch auto transmission and 4.3 seconds when you do the manual labor with the middle pedal (0 to 60mph or 96km/h in 4.1 seconds with the standard 6-speed manual and 3.9 seconds with the optional 7-speed DCT).

VW's New Beetle Dune Concept Can Carry Skis in Style

Posted: 13 Jan 2014 12:34 PM PST

After the leaked photos of VW's Beetle Dune Concept, we now have official details about the study, which was revealed today at the Detroit Auto Show.

Based on the Beetle R-Line, the Dune Concept is longer (+0.5in/12mm), wider (+22in/559mm) and taller (+0.8in/20mm) though, while also having two inches (51mm) of additional ground clearance.

VW says the study "shows the potential for a new production version of the sportiest Beetle ever", which we translate as it's soon coming to a dealer near you…

Featured in an "Arizona" yellow-orange metallic paint, with the two-part wheel arch extensions offset in black, the Beetle Dune Concept rides on 19-inch alloy wheels shod with 255/45 tires. It comes with a new hood that sports a raised center section flanked by air vents, while the redesigned apron has a large central air intake. Semi-circular LED foglights round out the front-end changes.

At the rear, the Dune features a roof spoiler and a trunk lid that work together to accommodate a pair of skis, as you can see in the photos. Even with skis mounted, the trunk lid can be opened at any time. Despite its off-road looks, the Beetle Dune is front-wheel-drive.

On the inside, the Beetle Dune Concept uses the "Arizona" exterior color on the dashboard, while a handle has replaced the bin on the passenger side. The center of the dashboard is dominated by 7.7-inch AMOLED touchscreen, which operates the infotainment system. The seats feature a sporty design, with their outer surfaces being wrapped in "Titan Black leather", and the center section in "Ceramique" colored "Gobi" breathable sport fabric.

A Technical Video Walk-Around the New Corvette Z06 and C7.R, Plus Live Shots from Detroit

Posted: 13 Jan 2014 12:12 PM PST

GM is certainly raising the bar again with the latest addition to the Corvette Stingray family, the new Z06, which polishes up the previous generation ZR1's supercharged formula, using the seventh generation model's lighter chassis as a base to create an even better and faster sports car.

And yes, factoring in how potent the C7 Z06 is, we too are pondering what kind of a monster is GM working on for the ZR1's replacement…

For now, you can calm down your curiosity with live shots from Chevrolet's Detroit motor show stand, and a pair of videos.

In the first clip that you will find below, Tadge Juechter, Corvette chief engineer, provides us an in-depth look at all of the performance-driven aspects of the 625-horsepower 2015 Corvette Z06, while in the second one, Jim Campbell, U.S. vice president of Performance Vehicles and Motorsports, does the same for the racing version of the Corvette dubbed C7.R.

Volvo’s Pretty XC Coupé Fully Revealed and Detailed in Detroit

Posted: 13 Jan 2014 11:42 AM PST

It may sound like a stretch to call a two-door SUV a pretty car, but in the case of Volvo's newly-revealed XC Coupé that just made its debut in Detroit, I think it really stands true much more so than you would expect.

Even if the premise of it being inspired by sports equipment doesn't sound too exciting against the industry trend of mimicking the silhouette of felines, the end product you see pictured below shows a lot of promise for all of Volvo's future design efforts, if they choose to continue along its route.

However, they don't promote it as a pretty face, but rather as the usual lifestyle proposal for the outdoorsman and woman; it's designed "to ensure that they make it back in one piece, they prefer high-performance equipment that offers the ultimate sense of freedom and protection," said Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President of Volvo's design department.

He added that it's "perfectly in tune with this active lifestyle. Its capability and protection is cleverly integrated into the sophisticated looks. Concept XC Coupé is ready and willing to bring you into the adventure zone and back."

Were you to put this new XC Coupé next to the Concept Coupé, you'd need glasses with the wrong diopter to say they are not similar, yet the newly-revealed study has a very different character with noticeably more pronounced flanks, the extra ground clearance and the crossover-esque cladding around the wheel arches and bumpers (the front bumper under-guard, the one that stands out because it's orange is actually made out of rubber).

Of course, the concept previews the brand's future design language, as we already knew, and more specifically, the styling that is to be adopted by the next XC90. If it's anything like this in the looks department, and doesn't get toned down, the competition should be very afraid.

Toyota Shows GRMN and G Sports Concepts at 2014 Tokyo Auto Salon

Posted: 13 Jan 2014 11:22 AM PST

The tuning-oriented Tokyo Auto Salon 2014 hosted a series of Toyota concept cars over the weekend at Makuhari Messe in Chiba City, with Japan's largest carmaker bringing no fewer than 34 vehicles at the show.

Among these there were two "GAZOO Racing tuned by MN" (GRMN) concepts, two "G Sports" models, as well as three GAZOO Racing vehicles that will compete at the 24 Hours Nürburgring endurance race in Germany in June.

The GRMN series display featured the GRMN Mark X Concept and the GRMN 86 Concept, both sporting a performance-oriented package. The GRMN Mark X Concept combines the Mark X's exclusive 6-speed manual transmission with a V6 3.5-liter engine, and features special suspension tuning, disc brakes and Torsen limited-slip differential for improved handling.

The GRMN 86 Concept builds on Toyota's technical expertise gained at the 24 Hours Nürburgring endurance race and has a reduced weight, lower center of gravity, and increased body rigidity.

Toyota also revealed two concepts from the G Sports series: the Harrier G Sports Concept and the Vitz RS G Sports Concept. The former is the first sporty SUV in the G Sports series and features a sharp bodykit, with Toyota saying it combines "the joy of driving with riding comfort and adds a sporty and unique feel to the base vehicle." As for the Vitz RS G Sports Concept, Toyota says is features exclusive sports seats, optimized suspension tuning and enhanced body rigidity.

You can find technical details of the GRMN and G Sports concepts in the chart posted below.

BMW Brushes Up the X1 Compact Crossover for 2014MY

Posted: 13 Jan 2014 10:50 AM PST

After roaming alone in the lower priced (and sized) segments of the SUV luxury market for about a year and a half in the States, BMW's X1 will soon have to make space and greet two new rivals from its traditional German rivals, Audi and Mercedes-Benz, which will launch the GLA and Q3 respectively.

BMW already has plans for a replacement, as the car has been in the market (in Europe) since 2009, but for now, it is treating it to some light updates for the 2014MY at the Detroit Motor Show.

The changes seen on the North American market model will also be applied to Europe and elsewhere, with the 2014MY X1 to go on sale worldwide in the spring.

Exterior revisions include different air intake vents in the front apron, new accents in the boot lip, standard daytime driving lights on all models, new 17-inch alloy wheels and the addition of a Sparkling Brown metallic to the paint options.

Inside, on the XLine, Sport Line and M Sport trim models, the instrument cluster visor is now dressed in soft-touch plastics highlighted by lapfolded seam, while buyers can opt for high-gloss Black, matt Coral Red or pearl-gloss Chrome accents.

The final touch for the new model year is the expanded range of BMW ConnectedDrive services, which can be accessed via apps, using the smartphone or the SIM card that is installed in the vehicle.

Meet the Z06’s Racing Cousin, the Chevrolet Corvette C7.R [w/Video]

Posted: 13 Jan 2014 10:17 AM PST

The Corvette wouldn't have become the global icon it is if it weren't for its racing exploits. It was only natural then that the C7 Corvette Stingray spawned a racing version and that's where the Corvette C7.R comes in.

Unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show, the new racing Vette was co-developed with the 2015 Corvette Z06, with the two cars sharing chassis, engine technologies and aerodynamics strategy.

Just like the Z06, the new C7.R features an aluminum frame that is 40 percent stiffer than the outgoing C6.R. The new racing Vette features a direct-injected naturally aspirated 5.5-liter V8 engine carried over from the C6.R, as the GT rules limit the maximum displacement to 5.5-liters and prohibit forced induction.

Another difference from the Z06 is the suspension, which is modified to accommodate wider racing tires and larger brakes, again part of the GT regulations. Aerodynamically, the Corvette C7.R and Z06 feature similar front splitters, rocker panels, and front- and rear-brake cooling ducts. The race car also features a larger rear wing and a larger radiator inlet that improves the aerodynamic balance.

Additionally, the C7.R ditches the NACA (U.S. National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics) ducts, replacing them with openings on each of the rear quarter panels, above the brake ducts, meant to draw air to help cool the race car's transaxle and differential.

The C7.R will debut on January 25 at the 52nd Rolex 24 At Daytona, the inaugural round of the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship, a new series resulted after the merger of the American Le Mans Series and GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series. Corvette Racing will field two cars at the event, with the C7.R to compete in the GT Le Mans class. The factory team is also expected to compete in June at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the GTE Pro class.

Porsche Blows the Top Off Retro-Sexy 911 Targa, Priced from $101,600* [w/Video]

Posted: 13 Jan 2014 03:43 PM PST

Porsche is returning back to the 911's roots with the new Targa edition that is making its world premiere at the 2014 Detroit Motor Show today.

In a nicely done nostalgic approach that mimics the original 911 Targa of 1965, Porsche fitted the new 991-generation model with a roof bar, a movable front roof section, and a wraparound rear window.

However, unlike the classic model, on the new 911 Targa, the roof segment can be opened and closed at the push of a button, with the top automatically stowed away behind the rear seats.

Positioned between the traditional coupe and convertible editions of the 911 for those who want a bit of both, but are willing to make a few compromises, the Targa will be offered in two engine variants, both exclusively with AWD featuring the wider rear track and body, and the same Porsche Traction Management (PTM), found in all other 911 all-wheel-drive models.

The range starts with the 911 Targa 4 that sports a 3.4-liter flat-six with 345hp (350PS), which when equipped with the optional Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) dual-clutch transmission and Sport Chrono package, accelerates to 60 mph (96km/h) in 4.6 seconds topping out at 174 mph or 280km/h (175 mph or 282 km/h with the manual transmission).

At the top of the line is the 911 Targa 4S, which just like its coupe and convertible siblings, has a 3.8-liter boxer engine producing 395hp (400PS). It sprints from zero to 60 mph (96km/h) in 4.2 seconds when equipped with optional PDK and Sport Chrono package reaching a top speed of 183 mph (295km/h) when equipped with a manual transmission and 182 mph (293 km/h) with PDK.

As far as U.S. pricing is concerned, the base 911 Targa 4 will have an MSRP of $101,600 while the 911 Targa 4S model starts at $116,200, with both prices excluding a destination charge of $995.

Porsche plans to commence deliveries of the 911 Targa in the U.S. this summer.

Mercedes-Benz Debuts New S600 V12, Announces MY Updates for S-Class

Posted: 13 Jan 2014 08:54 AM PST

Taking its place at the top-end of the regular (non-AMG) S-Class lineup is the new Mercedes-Benz S600, a V12-powered luxury sedan that has now made its grand entrance at the Detroit motor show, with the market launch to follow in March 2014.

While enjoying all the luxuries and technology features of the other S-Class models, the S600 adds a 6.0-liter bi-turbo V12 engine to the mix, which packs a stronger punch than the older 510hp (517PS) 5.5-liter V12, delivering 523hp (530PS) between 4,900 and 5,300 rpm and 830Nm (612 lb-ft) of peak torque from 1,900 to 4,000 rpm.

For the first time the S600 comes equipped with an ECO start/stop function as standard, allowing the car to meet the stricter Euro 6 emissions standard, while the combined fuel consumption of the S 600 stands at 11.3 l/10km (20.8mpg US or 25.0mpg UK), a 21 per cent improvement over its predecessor. Power is transferred to the rear wheels through a 7-speed automatic transmission.

In addition to the release of the new S600, Mercedes also announced some model-year updates for the existing S-Class range.

Beginning from March 2014, all the functions of the head unit can be controlled by fingertip gesture, as with a smartphone, from the new, optional touchpad that also allows letters, numbers and special characters to be entered in handwriting in any language that is available on the unit.

A head-up display is also available as an option for the S-Class, while Mercedes is adding a new optional electric (front) windscreen heating system.

Finally, the COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST system is being replaced on all S-Class models by the COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS as standard. According to Benz, along with the adaptive Brake Assist system that helps protect against collisions at speeds of over 4 mph (6 km/h, the new system features an addition function in which, if the danger of collision persists and the driver fails to respond, it can carry out autonomous braking at speeds of up to 124 mph (200km/h). The system also brakes in response to stationary vehicles at a speed of up to 31 mph (50km/h) and is able to prevent rear-end collisions at up to 25 mph (40km/h).

"The S-Class has always been the embodiment of our claim to deliver the very best in terms of both technology and design" said Ola Källenius, Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Mercedes-Benz. "And our flagship model, the S 600, epitomises the focus of our development work, the 'Essence of Luxury', in a way that no other model can. Our customers in North America and Asia in particular will enjoy this new top model with its exciting V12 engine," he added.

2015 Corvette Z06 Has 625HP, Is Faster Than C6 ZR1 on the Track! [w/Video]

Posted: 13 Jan 2014 11:02 AM PST

Chevrolet has finally unveiled the 2015 Corvette Z06 at the Detroit Auto Show, with the performance version of the Corvette Stingray surely bringing up a few surprises. First of all, Chevrolet says that with the track-focused Z07 performance package the car delivers faster lap times than the 2013 Corvette ZR1!

Furthermore, the 2015 Corvette Z06 is the first Z06 model to offer a supercharged engine, a removable roof panel and an available paddle-shift 8-speed automatic transmission (yes, you also have the option of a manual).

The car features a new LT4 6.2-liter supercharged engine that is expected to deliver at least 625hp and 635 lb-ft of torque (861 Nm). Featuring direct injection, cylinder deactivation and continuously variable valve timing, the unit is linked to a standard 7-speed manual gearbox or an available 8-speed auto. Engine power is boosted by the new 1.7L Eaton R1740 TVS supercharger, which spins at up to 20,000 rpm – 5,000 rpm more than the supercharger on the Corvette ZR1's LS9.

Chevrolet offers a track-focused Z07 Performance Package that adds unique components to increase aerodynamic downforce, Michelin Pilot Super Sport Cup tires for enhanced grip and Brembo carbon ceramic-matrix brake rotors. Currently under development testing, the Z07 package has already recorded some of the fastest lap times ever for a Corvette, surpassing even the ZR1.

Just like the Corvette Stingray it's based upon, the Corvette Z06 features an aluminum frame, which will also be used by the Corvette Racing C7.R. The stiffer aluminum frame has allowed Chevrolet to offer the Z06 with a removable roof panel for the first time.

As the car features wider tires, the fenders of the Z06 are extended by 2.2 inches (56mm) at the front and 3.15 inches (80mm) at the rear, offering the car a wider, lower appearance that is also highlighted by a unique rear fascia. On the Z06, the taillamps are pushed approximately three inches farther apart, toward the edges of the body.

The Z06 offers three, increasing levels of aerodynamic downforce: standard Z06, carbon-fiber aero package and Z07 package. The latter makes the Corvette Z06 deliver the most amount of aerodynamic downforce of any GM production car.

On the inside, the Z06 gets unique color schemes and a flat-bottomed steering wheel, as well as two seating choices: a comfort-oriented GT seat and a Competition Sport seat with more aggressive side bolstering.

Chevrolet did not reveal performance data or pricing, but said the Z06 will arrive in early 2015 with the smart electronic limited-slip differential (eLSD) as a standard feature.

First Official Look at Mercedes-Benz's New V12-Powered S600

Posted: 13 Jan 2014 08:15 AM PST

We'll soon delve into the nitty-gritties of the most luxurious version of the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class to date, the V12-powered S600, but before we do, let us share these official photos of the car that just surfaced on the web ahead of its world premiere in Detroit.

For a flagship version (excluding the AMG variants of the series), the new S600 is rather discreet, leaving the V12 fender badges together with the model name on the boot lid and the quad pipes do the talking.

Pop the hood up and you'll find a 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged V12 engine, which according to a leaked spec sheet, is good for a maximum output of 530PS (523hp) between 4,900 and 5,300 rpm and peak torque of 830Nm (612 lb-ft) from 1,900 to 4,000 rpm.

A 7G Tronic Plus transmission handles the delivery of power to the rear wheels, with Mercedes giving out a combined fuel economy figure of 11.3 l/10km (20.8mpg US or 25.0mpg UK) on the European cycle.

Cadillac's New Wreathless Logo Adorns its Detroit Show Booth

Posted: 13 Jan 2014 07:48 AM PST

It's not official yet, so we don't have the details, but all the rumors about GM dropping the wreath from Cadillac's emblem appear to be true, as the brand is showcasing a redesigned version of the logo without the laurel wreath at its Detroit motor show stand where it will soon unveil the new ATS Coupe.

You probably noticed that the 2015 Cadillac Escalade is still wearing the current wreath and crest logo on its chin, so it is likely that GM will roll out the new emblem gradually, starting with the ATS Coupe, as we recently reported.

This won't be the first time that Cadillac has heavily revised its emblem, as this has happened more than three dozen times in the brand's history.

The unofficial reason for the change now is that, many consumers found the wreath to be outdated and not representative of Cadillac's more stylish and techier approach in the luxury segment.

Thanks to Nicholas for the heads up!

An In-Depth Video Look at the New 2015 Chrysler 200 Mid-Size Sedan

Posted: 13 Jan 2014 07:20 AM PST

Chrysler's latest attempt to win back a chunk of the popular mid-size segment with the all-new 200 series hasn't been much of a secret, as we had the opportunity to see the car on multiple occasions these past few days. Now, following its grand premiere in Detroit today, we can show you running footage as well.

You can read our detailed report on the 200 here, but if you want the skinny, it's an all-new design running on the Fiat-Chrysler Group's CUS-wide modular platform that is derived from the Alfa Romeo Giulietta and used on many other models including the Dodge Dart and Jeep Cherokee.

Engine options include an 184hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder gasoline and a 295hp 3.6-liter V6, both paired to a nine-speed auto, with all-wheel drive available for the first time in the model's history, which could prove popular in certain regions.

The cars that the Chrysler 200 will go up against when it goes on sale later this year with prices starting from $21,700 plus a $995 destination fee, include the Ford Fusion, Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata, Nissan Altima, Hyundai Sonata and of course, the segment leader, the Toyota Camry.
