Poll: Which One Would You Go For, the Porsche Cayman or Alfa Romeo 4C?

Posted: 20 Jun 2013 07:27 PM PDT

We have been blessed in recent years with lots of excellent sports cars, from a variety of manufacturers approaching the problem from their own unique perspective.

One carmaker that had been inactive in this particular sporty market sector for a while is Alfa Romeo that has returned it pretty 4C. It promises to be a very enjoyable driving package, with ultra-low weight and punchy turbocharged engine – sure, it won't please the ear as much as some of the six-cylinder cars, but it is as fast if not quicker than some very unlikely competitors, like Porsche's reportedly brilliant-to-drive new Cayman.

Posted: 20 Jun 2013 05:09 PM PDT

Things really have a tendency to get out of hand in Russia, and a highway crash turns into a felony as an Infiniti FX driver rams a Mitsubishi Colt from behind, launching it into the inner guard rail, causing it to crash quite severely. However, the luxurious Japanese SUV is not seriously damaged, and it speeds away from the scene, disappearing in the distance. Read more »

We've heard a lot about autonomous driving in recent years, but how about autonomous parking? Volvo has given this a thought and is developing the technology that will make autonomous parking a reality in the future.

A Volvo V40 prototype fitted with the technology is able to find and park in a vacant space by itself, without the driver inside. Volvo says the driverless car interacts safely and smoothly with other cars and pedestrians in the car park.

Cars Becoming More Reliable, But Owners Still Having Trouble With Design Flaws and Gizmos

Posted: 20 Jun 2013 04:14 PM PDT

You can pretty much get any normal-sized car, and spec it up to a very high level, with all the electronic and connectivity gizmos you could possibly want. You get a touchscreen in so many cars today, and parking sensors, and a backup camera and many buttons and design touches neatly integrated into the general functionality of a cabin.

Cars are getting reliable too, and very few are hideous to look at also, so we wonder is there anything bugging modern car owners?

New Maserati Ghibli's U.S. Ordering Guide Hits the Web

Posted: 20 Jun 2013 03:37 PM PDT

For many, the Ghibli is the most interesting Maserati to hit the automotive scene for the better part of this century for one very simple but important reason: it will be the most affordable model in the Italian sports car maker's range. What that translates into euros, dollars or the currency that is used in your country, remains unknown, though, parent company Fiat officials had previously suggested a starting price of somewhere around €50,000 in Europe.

Unfortunately, pricing is not among the details mentioned in the U.S. market-ordering guide for the 2014 Maserati Ghibl sedan that found its way online, courtesy of the Ghibliforums.

Lower Wages and Boost in Productivity are what GM Requires to Keep Holden Going in Australia

Posted: 20 Jun 2013 02:18 PM PDT

The Australian automotive manufacturing industry has been hit hard with Ford's announcement that it is dropping manufacturing the country, and closing down its two plants in 2016. Now fears have risen that GM may do the same as well, taking Holden with it.

Apparently, the cost of manufacturing cars in Australia is simply too high, due to a combination of factors including a strengthening of the local currency, high wages and their geographic position that can make sourcing parts more difficult. In fact, GM says it spends AU$3,750 ($3,548/€2,686) more for every car they make in the country, most of it being accounted for by the workers' pay.

Posted: 20 Jun 2013 01:50 PM PDT

Upon learning that the Model S' doesn't suffer too much in cold weather, a major concern for any battery-powered EV, it seemed like there was really nothing standing in Tesla's way on the road to reaching a nearly perfect record with its all-electric sedan that has so far stood up to all that has been thrown at it.

Still, not enough time has passed since its launch for the scene to give an accurate judgment of the car, and this latest piece of news we have regarding it is not of the positive kind.

Someone Walked Away from This Horrific Crash That Split an Audi S8 in Two!

Posted: 20 Jun 2013 01:17 PM PDT

If you only looked at these chilling pictures, and especially the one showing the rear end of a first generation Audi S8 on the road and the front end parked –literally- on the wall of a house without reading the details, you'd be out of your mind not to think that there was at least one fatality here. However, you would be wrong to do so…

Yes, you read that correctly; no one was killed, and the person driving (alone) the German luxury sedan came out of this accident, which occurred in Belgium, near the border with The Netherlands, with only very minor injuries, according to local news site Nieuwsblad! Unbelievable right?

Autocar Gets Behind the Wheel of the Stillborn C-X75 Hybrid Hypercar

Posted: 20 Jun 2013 12:41 PM PDT

The automotive world is often a cruel one, and some of the coolest cars never make it into consumers' hands, because of some technicality, costs or logistics. I was quite sad when Jaguar announced last year that their promising C-X75 hybrid hypercar, which was both reportedly very green and very fast, received the axe, and I feared I would never get to see one of these in action. Aussie University Creates a More Mainstream Solar-Powered Car called Eve

Posted: 20 Jun 2013 11:43 AM PDT

When one thinks of solar-powered cars, the thought conjures up images of going along at three miles per hour, in something that looks nothing like a car. However, they have to be made ultra-aerodynamic, to make the most of what little power it is able to capture from the Sun.

Now, the University of New South Wales in Sidney, which benefits from the experience of the Sunswift team, has announced that this year's car (their fifth-gen vehicle) will be approached differently, and the plan is to make it more like an actual car, and just generally "be more mainstream."

This is What You'd Call Less Than Inch from Death

There's no way of telling if this motorcycle rider from Russia was fully aware of how terribly close he came to death or an extremely long visit to a local hospital at best, but if he ever does check out this dash-cam video on the interwebs, he'll sure as hell thank Lady Luck for making it out completely unscathed. MT Does Classic Test Between BMW 750Li and Jaguar XJL Supercharged

Posted: 20 Jun 2013 08:36 AM PDT

Those looking to buy a long wheelbase car will find that the Jaguar XJL bears little resemblance to what they normally get - the old XJ included.

When comparing it to a BMW 7-Series long wheelbase edition, a 750Li, the much more restrained German saloon is overshadowed by the very flamboyant Brit, both inside and out, as well as when it comes to the overall driving and ownership experience, as MotorTrend found out recently when pitting the two cars against one another

Bummer…Biker Crashes During Wheelie, Futilely Tries to Run Away from Cops

Posted: 20 Jun 2013 06:54 AM PDT

What is it with motorcyclists attempting wheelies in front or behind cops lately? You may remember this incident from less than two weeks ago when a biker wheelie-d himself into the rear end (insert face-palm here) of a Chevy Caprice patrol car.

In this latest and somewhat related accident in the sense that the biker performed a wheelie around cops and was eventually apprehended, a motorcyclist lifted the front wheel of his machine but lost balance and wiggled straight into a curb that knocked him down on his behinds – the two-hand rubbing gesture suggests it was a painful experience.

Being that we're less than a year away from the official presentation, it shouldn't come as a surprise that we're seeing a greater number of final prototypes making their appearance on the road, like this camouflaged tester of the S550 codenamed Mustang snagged on film here in the U.S. by the crew over at Mustang6g.
