Bentley Reveals Final Version of 600HP Continental GT3 Racer at Goodwood [w/Video] Posted: 12 Jul 2013 05:22 PM PDT Following last year's reveal of the Continental GT3 Concept Racer at the Paris auto show, Bentley has now presented the final version of the car at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The Continental GT3 is powered by a race-tuned version of the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, developing up to 600 hp in unrestricted race configuration. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a Xtrac six-speed sequential gearbox with a limited slip differential, mounted as a transaxle for optimised weight distribution. Gear changes are completed via a pneumatic shift system, controlled by paddles mounted to the steering wheel. Read more » |
GM Pledges to Have Twice as Many Models with 40+MPG Highway by 2017 Posted: 12 Jul 2013 01:19 PM PDT While many of the automakers that are currently operating in the US opposed the strict CAFÉ regulations that force them to achieve an average efficiency rating for their entire range of vehicles of 54.5 mpg US (4.3 l/100km / 65.4 mpg UK) by 2025, GM is apparently embracing the idea of going green. They were the first to sign the "Climate Declaration pledge" which states that "preventing climate change is good business." Read more » |
Rider Prepares for Crash, Lady Luck Gives a Helping Hand Posted: 12 Jul 2013 12:41 PM PDT We'll give props to this Russian motorcyclist for being aware that a car was on course to cut him off, but we'll also give him a big thumbs down for not wearing a safety helmet – maybe this accident will teach him a lesson. The rider saw that a Hyundai hatch was about to enter his lane and in a split second, he lifted his knees up and prepared for impact – don't be alarmed, there's nothing gross about this video as he made it out alive and well, thanks to a bit of luck on his behalf. GM Says New Cadillac ELR Being the Only EV with Full LED Exterior Lights Posted: 12 Jul 2013 12:02 PM PDT LEDs or light-emitting diodes are becoming commonplace in more and more vehicles today, but we still have a few years ahead of us for cars from all segments to adopt the energy-saving technology throughout, so when an automaker makes full use of them, it's something worth bragging about. Today, GM came out with a release stating that when its luxed-up Volt (those are our words, not GMs…), the 2014 Cadillac ELR extended range luxury coupe arrives in U.S. dealerships this winter, "it will be the first electric vehicle introduced with all-LED exterior lighting". Ford to Slash Focus Electric Price by up to $4,000 in the U.S. Posted: 12 Jul 2013 11:30 AM PDT Ford will cut the starting price of the Focus Electric by $4,000 (€3,065) for the 2014 model year, as the U.S. carmaker wants to appeal to mainstream buyers who have been reluctant so far to buy pricey EVs, according to Detroit News report. Surprisingly, just last month, a Ford executive told reporters that the automaker would not follow in the footsteps of its competitors and slash prices. U.S. sales of electric vehicles in the first six months of this year reached 41,000 units, making up only 0.5 percent of all new cars and trucks sold. Read more » |
This is How You Match Your Dress with Your Car Posted: 12 Jul 2013 11:10 AM PDT We don't know about all you gents reading this piece, but something tells us that the idea of matching ones clothing to their rides has most certainly crossed the minds of plenty of female readers. Who knows what automakers have in store for us in the future (changing colors at the touch of a button sounds like a good idea), but for now, if you don't want to change your clothes, you'll have to either paint or wrap your car. New York-based fashion designer Mara Hoffman did the latter to match a 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Convertible to her fashion line as part of the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim. Read more » |
BMW Talks about the First 7-Series in New Video Posted: 12 Jul 2013 10:47 AM PDT With at least two years remaining before BMW will launch an all-new BMW 7-Series, the Bavarian carmaker has decided to give us a history lesson and talk about the first generation of its flagship luxury sedan in a new official video. Alfa Romeo 4C at the Goodwood Festival of Speed Posted: 12 Jul 2013 10:03 AM PDT If there's one Alfa Romeo model you should pay special attention to at the ongoing Goodwood Festival of Speed 2013 (11-14 July), it's the all-new 4C mid-engine sports coupe that's making its dynamic UK debut at the motoring event. As an added bonus, the 4C 'Launch Edition' doing the rounds at Goodwood is finished in a different metallic grey hue, which looks pretty nice if you ask us – yes, as hard as we tried, we're remain hugely bugged (pun-intended) about those atrocious headlamps. Next Skoda Superb to Get Better Styling, Rapid Spaceback Confirmed for Frankfurt Debut Posted: 12 Jul 2013 08:48 AM PDT When the current-gen Skoda Superb was first revealed, it looked awkward and mildly disproportionate, with wrong headlights. However, if you ask me, photos don't do it justice, and in the metal it's considerably better – one couldn't call it particularly stylish, even after its recent facelift, which tried grafting the new family look onto its face, but even so, it does seem to have aged well... Three Girls, Three Crashed Cars, One Angry Gentleman Posted: 12 Jul 2013 08:20 AM PDT This is what you get for trying to impress the ladies on the road in Russia: a three car collision and not a single phone number. A man in a compact sedan noticed three young women waiting to cross the road, and unlike many of his fellow motorists, he wanted to be a gentleman, so he came to a screeching halt. Like Captain Hindsight would say, that was a bad idea, because two other drivers following from behind weren't keeping a safe distance and/or paying attention, and ended up crashing into the first car. BMW Says that China Will Overtake U.S. as its Primary Market in 2013 Posted: 12 Jul 2013 07:44 AM PDT The familiar qualities of Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, more commonly known as BMW, have attracted and will keep attracting buyers from all over the world. And this, despite the fact that some have said the company has kind-of lost its edge in recent years, distancing itself from its original core values, and relying instead on marketing, an aggressive expansion into new territories and the idea that covering every single niche (and creating a few more) is a good thing. Are These the First Drawings of NEVS' New Saab 9-3 EV? Posted: 12 Jul 2013 07:09 AM PDT It's been some time since we last heard anything new about the future of Saab from its current owner, NEVS (National Electric Vehicle Sweden), which acquired the leftovers of Saab following the automaker's bankruptcy. Now, while NEVS hasn't made any new announcements, a picture that was recently uploaded on the website of Gothenburg design studio Yovinn, which employs Matias Cindric, former chief designer of Saab, has the crews at Saabsunited and Swedish daily SvD pondering in excitement if one of the two cars pictured could be a sketch for the upcoming 9-3-based electric sedan. Civil War: New Mercedes A45 AMG Hatch vs. CLA 45 AMG Saloon - Which One Would You Get? Posted: 12 Jul 2013 06:30 AM PDT If you live in North America and want to get a taste of Mercedes-Benz's hot offerings in the compact segment, the only way to go is the CLA 45 AMG sports saloon. Across the pond, however, buyers have another option in the guise of the mechanically identical, but smaller A45 AMG five-door hatchback, and it is these two performance Mercs that Autoexpress magazine has brought together for its latest test. Honda to Base European F1 Operations in the UK Posted: 12 Jul 2013 05:56 AM PDT The UK has been the place to go for Japanese carmakers these past few decades, so it should not surprise anyone that Honda has chosen Britain and Milton Keynes to setup its racing operations in preparation for its return to F1 and its participation in the World Championship from the 2015 season. Skoda Pops Out Another Teaser of New Rapid BodyStyle Posted: 12 Jul 2013 05:24 AM PDT It seems that we're getting closer to the big reveal for Skoda and its new Rapid variant, with the Czech carmaker dropping a second teaser today. We're itching to tell you it's the estate-style Rapid Sportback, but we're holding back for now because the tailgate and window treatments look a little but different than what we've seen on the prototypes as well as the allegedly official photos from the configurator – notice how the window extends under the top of the lights. New Toyota RAV4 Rated 'Poor' by IIHS for Weak Small Overlap Test Performance Posted: 12 Jul 2013 04:59 AM PDT The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has automakers' engineers in charge of safety back to the drawing board, trying to figure out how to get a passing score for the newly-introduced small overlap crash test, which has vehicles hit the specially-designed obstacle with the area around the front-left headlight, and no more. This puts a heck of a lot of strain on the structure of the car, especially if has not been specifically designed to take this very type of shock. Read more » |
