Scoop: Mystery McLaren P1 XP2R Prototype Photographed and Filmed on the 'Ring

Posted: 18 Jul 2013 06:07 PM PDT

Hasn't McLaren already revealed its P1 hybrid supercar? Sure it has, just this past March at the Geneva Motor Show. So why do we have another scoop story on the P1 then? Well, time to end our monologue and elaborate.

While on the hunt for future cars at the Nürburgring racetrack, a silver McLaren P1 caught the eyes of our spies – and probably anyone else mildly interested in cars at the circuit. Upon a closer look at the photos, it turns out that this P1 was wearing a pair of stickers in front of the rear wheel arches and above the side skirts that read "XP2R Prototype Vehicle".

Detroit City Goes Bust, Files for Bankruptcy

Posted: 18 Jul 2013 05:06 PM PDT

The once great city of Detroit, the heart of American manufacturing and automobiles, just can't get a break. At the same time the big three - General Motors, Chrysler and Ford, begin to view the future more optimistically following the bankruptcy of the first two, Michigan's Governor Rick Snyder announced today that he approved a request from Detroit Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr to file for Chapter 9 bankruptcy protection.

"Detroit simply cannot raise enough revenue to meet its current obligations, and that is a situation that is only projected to get worse absent a bankruptcy filing," Snyder explained.

Tesla's Elon Musk Working on a Mach 1-Capable Hyperloop Plane-Train Hybrid

Posted: 18 Jul 2013 04:09 PM PDT

It's hard not to be impressed by Elon Musk's achievements so far, and he seems to have the magic business touch which makes things just work, even against reasonable odds. Who would have thought that sending money from any place in the world could be made easy and only require the use of a bank for the withdrawal process, the rest being surprisingly fuss-free, or the almost justifiable all-electric sedan with genuine mass appeal – it too works, and apparently very well indeed. He even put the idea of private space exploration into practice, with SpaceX. Read more »

…And This is How Pile-ups Happen

Posted: 18 Jul 2013 03:39 PM PDT

We were accustomed to seeing only the aftermath of pileups on highways, but that was before the time of Russian dash-cams, which have changed they way we view accidents forever.

In this short clip, we see a driver going faster that what traffic conditions permit while also not keeping a safe distance with other road users -and well, it happened; he crashed into a Hyundai Accent.

Autocar Compares GT-R to RS6 Avant, Discovers Nissan Is Faster and Audi Is More Comfortable...

Posted: 18 Jul 2013 12:35 PM PDT

The only real reason we're showing you this is because Autocar's Steve Sutcliffe makes some fair points about the cars he tests, and after watching one of his videos you will remember the key bits of information which have been conveyed – that's a good thing.

However, in this case, the comparison test staged by the British publication is almost as pointless as the Dacia Duster versus Ginetta test they made a while back.

Contest Commemorates Sale of 100,000 Plug-In Vehicle

Posted: 18 Jul 2013 11:49 AM PDT

While EVs were said to be abundant before the days of the Ford Model T, it was the plentiful availability of oil that ultimately led to the loss of interest in their further development.

It may not have necessarily been any greener to keep going electric at that stage, especially considering the high level of toxicity associated with batteries, but it definitely would have been a lot quieter… Besides, if the world consensus would have been for the planet to go green, then they could have done so with the diesel engine, originally designed to run on peanut oil, however, the petroleum-derived fuel we now call diesel was chosen.

Spanish Designers Looks Into Audi's Future with R10 Concept

Posted: 18 Jul 2013 10:41 AM PDT

Few will argue that the R8 is the most interesting and brand-defying Audi of the past couple of decades – possibly even since the original Ur-Quattro, and despite the fact that it has been on sale since 2007 having received a light update in 2012, it remains relevant and competitive in the entry-level supercar segment.

One of the most difficult tasks for any automaker is to present an equally impressive and satisfying replacement for a successful (in its niche) product like the R8. The task becomes even more challenging if you want to top it with an even better and more extreme vehicle, like the one proposed here by David Cava.

A Look Back on the Porsche Cayman Mk 1

Posted: 18 Jul 2013 10:07 AM PDT

The all-new second generation Porsche Cayman launched late last year replaced the original model, introduced in 2005. The mid-engined entry-level Porsche coupe was a hardtop version of the Boxster, with which it shared all underpinnings. However, it was marketed as a more expensive proposition, as it had more powerful engines and a more rigid body (thanks to the roof) that translated into better handling. Read more »

General Motors and historians alike remain unsure (see below) about the origins of the Chevrolet bowtie to this day, but they do agree that Chevrolet co-founder William C. Durant was the one to introduce the brand's signature badge in 1913 on the 1914 Chevrolet H-2 Royal Mail and the H-4 Baby Grand, centered at the front of both models. Read more »

Now that we may get an actual working hoverboard, which is on its way to becoming a reality in two years' time ( or not…) depending on your degree of skepticism regarding the matter, we expect to see more and more of these futuristic pieces of tech taken out of the realm of sci-fi and made real. Like this robotic exoskeleton, made by Japanese company Sagawa Electronics, which is, at heart, also a movie-based idea. Read more »

Take a Video Look at Mercedes-Benz's New S63 AMG Luxury Bruiser

Posted: 18 Jul 2013 07:39 AM PDT

From a driver's perspective, the most interesting models in Mercedes-Benz's vast lineup are those with the AMG badge – not the AMG Sport trim moniker, but the real AMGs, and this holds true for the brand-new S63 AMG unveiled on Wednesday.

This sported up limousine combines the latest developments in comfort and safety features with a more engaging chassis setup and a twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V8 engine pumping out 577hp (585PS) at 5,500 rpm and 900 Nm (663 lb-ft) at 2,250-3,750 rpm.

Italian Coachbuilder Turns Nissan NV200 into a Sightseeing Open-Top MPV

Posted: 18 Jul 2013 09:49 AM PDT

Most of the first cars in the world were convertibles, so it should come as no surprise that people have felt the need to chop off the roof from pretty much any type of vehicle ever since. If Freud was still around, he'd probably say that it has something to do with the feeling of lost childhood – or something like that.

However, in the case of this particular Nissan Evalia MPV (or NV200 as it is known in North America and other places), the reasons for the conversion were a little different. The car serves as a sightseeing van on the sunny Italian island of Capri and replaces a similar convertible MPV based on the Nissan Serena.
