This Is How Much You Can Shrink a Car and Still Have it be Street Legal

Posted: 29 Sep 2013 09:59 AM PDT

Move over Peel P50 and custom-made Top Gear microcar, because there's a new and even smaller kid on the block! As I'm sure you all know, the Peel was the bulbous little blue car driven by Jeremy Clarkson into the BBC the actual offices, in an episode of the show, from 2007.

However, he probably would have been even happier with the open-air experience of this one-off car created by custom car builder Austin Coulson, from Texas.

About the same size as a child's electric-powered stroller, but with much bigger and sturdier wheels, it can just accommodate a full-sized human, though I imagine this would be huge amounts of fun for actual kids to drive around. That, of course, could only be done on private property, because Austin's creation is genuinely the world's smallest road-worthy car; it's got lights, turn signals, approved windshield and wipers, and even a lap belt.

And these are not just mere claims by the builder, and the little car is actually attested by the Guinness World Records as being what it's claimed to be. Granted, it's not an actual production model like the Peel, but it is smaller, and just as cool. They even made a video about it, which you'll find posted below.

Volvo Concept Coupe May Be Built in Small Series, Report Says

Posted: 29 Sep 2013 07:17 AM PDT

The Volvo Concept Coupe was undoubtedly one of the stars of this year's Frankfurt Motor Show, pushing many to wonder whether it will reach production or simply remain a beautiful study.

Good news may be on the way since Volvo is said to consider a limited production run of the Concept Coupe following the enthusiastic reception of the car. A report from German car magazine Auto Bild says Volvo's top managers were impressed by the car's success in Frankfurt and are now analyzing the possibility to build it in a small series.

The report doesn't quote any sources but says a decision on this matter could be taken at the beginning of next year. If the Concept Coupe will get the green light, the magazine says production may be commissioned to Bertone. It remains to be seen whether Volvo will decide to build the coupe, since the company didn't state such plans when it unveiled the car in Frankfurt.

However, it's not hard to imagine a production version of the Concept Coupe, as the design is more down to earth than futuristic. Penned by Thomas Ingenlath, the P1800-inspired study previews Volvo's new design language, with the upcoming XC90 being the first production model to draw inspiration from it.

The concept features a hybrid system consisting of a 2.0-liter Drive-E petrol engine with a supercharger and a turbo driving the front wheels and an electric motor turning the rear wheels. Combined system output is 400 hp and more than 600 Nm (442 lb-ft) of peak torque.

Volkswagen's 262HP Scirocco R Driven on US Soil

Posted: 28 Sep 2013 02:17 PM PDT

Volkswagen remains confused as to whether or not its US customers want the Scirocco R. They already offer the Golf R VI, which comes in the same shade of blue and basically, has the same engine, but it only comes with all-wheel drive.

The sportier Scirocco body can only accommodate two passengers in the back, and fewer of their bags, so it can only be sold as a sports car - I would also call the looks polarizing too, as the new Scirocco bug never bit me.

Giving it a clear image seems problematic, because Americans don't really see it like a sexy sports car, and most think of it as a hatchback. However, in spite of all of the above, VW has still brought at least one to US soil recently and handed it over to a few journalists to gauge opinions.

CNET did its own review for the R, and they too were left wondering why VW didn't at least give it a chance, liking the car overall. I think they're definitely thinking about US sales (at least for the next generation model), otherwise it would not have been brought over (along with a Euro-spec Golf GTI Mk. VII). Automobile magazine also took the car for a quick spin.

That probably means VW's eyes and ears are checking out the automotive blogs and news sites scene for feedback, so if you want to make your voice heard, you can use the comments section below.

Mercedes-Benz Confirms S-Class Convertible Based on S-Class Coupe

Posted: 28 Sep 2013 07:22 AM PDT

It wasn't exactly a secret that Mercedes-Benz was planning a convertible version of the new S-Class, but now it's official. Mercedes-Benz product development boss Thomas Weber told Automotive News that the automaker will build a convertible version of its new flagship sedan.

The executive said the model will be based on the S-Class Coupe concept showcased at this month's Frankfurt Motor Show. He revealed that the production version of the S-Class coupe will go on sale in early 2014 in Europe, while the convertible is expected to arrive about a year later. In the U.S., both models should arrive shortly after.

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class convertible will feature a fabric top and will be offered with twin-turbocharged V8 and V12 engines. It will be the first open-top S-Class since the W111 Cabriolet, sold between 1961 and 1971.

Basically, this means the S-Class cabriolet will be a two-door and not a four-door, as it was rumored before (unless they're planning to do both…). You may remember that in 2007 Mercedes-Benz revealed a four-door convertible study called Ocean Drive, which was based on the previous-generation W221 S-Class. This concept led many to assume Mercedes will build a four-door S-Class cabriolet.

It remains to be seen how Mercedes-Benz will market the S-Class cabriolet, since the brand already has a luxurious convertible in its lineup, the SL roadster. However, the SL only offers two seats, while the S-Class cabriolet will likely offer four real seats and will be oriented more on comfort and luxury than on sportiness.

Posted: 27 Sep 2013 05:16 PM PDT

If there's one car that can excel in straight line racing right off the bat, it's the fabled Nissan GT-R. Even in pure stock form, it sprints through the quarter mile in the 10-second range, so you can imagine what some selective tuning can do.

In fact, you don't have to use your imagination at all. Across the pond, Exelixis Motorsports, a tuning company based in Romania that was founded by the pairing of some capable Romanian and Greek techs, is claiming to have created the fastest GT-R in Europe.

Nevada State Motorcyclists will Soon be Able to Legally Run Red Lights

Posted: 27 Sep 2013 01:54 PM PDT

The motorcyclists I've met always seem to complain about the same basic things, like how some drivers don't pay attention and thus they have to always be extra careful, or how their lane-splitting methodologies are frowned upon by some, despite not really affecting them directly in any way. To these we then add the numerous region-specific problems, like the one regarding traffic lights that some US states have faced. Read more »

IIHS Tests Frontal Crash Mitigation and Avoidance Systems, Highest Ratings go to Subaru

Posted: 27 Sep 2013 12:50 PM PDT

Up until now, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) rated a car's safety credentials based on the usual, familiar crash tests, as well as the number and complexity of the electronic safety systems it had fitted.

Front crash prevention or mitigation setups were, of course, taken into consideration, but the Institute only checked whether or not a car came with these, and not how effective they were.

Tesla Model S Owner Reportedly Involved in Unintended Acceleration Incident

Posted: 27 Sep 2013 08:50 AM PDT

Electric Vehicles often require special techniques to be driven properly, and the Tesla Model S is no exception – quite the contrary, actually. You have to get used to all the controls being on the central screen, the way the brake regeneration system cuts in, as well as the instant performance offered by the rear-mounted motor. The latter has proven to be a very powerful unit that really breathes (silent) life into the hefty sedan, motivating it with ease. Read more »

So, the video begins with the dash-cam equipped car making a turn on what initially seems a quiet street in Moscow's Marfino district. However, the driver stops, not only because an old lady is crossing the road, but also because there's a parked car with a driver wearing a Ferrari coat quarreling with a young woman.

However, on their way to that lofty end goal, they still have to popularize these vehicles, and what better way of doing so than an extension of the familiar tax credits awarded to those who buy an all-electric or plug-in car now. Today's China represents a new Eldorado for near or pure luxury car brands, with PSA Peugeot Citroën being one of many automotive groups looking to slice off another piece of the pie.
