Volkswagen's 262HP Scirocco R Driven on US Soil

Posted: 28 Sep 2013 02:17 PM PDT

Volkswagen remains confused as to whether or not its US customers want the Scirocco R. They already offer the Golf R VI, which comes in the same shade of blue and basically, has the same engine, but it only comes with all-wheel drive.

The sportier Scirocco body can only accommodate two passengers in the back, and fewer of their bags, so it can only be sold as a sports car - I would also call the looks polarizing too, as the new Scirocco bug never bit me.

Giving it a clear image seems problematic, because Americans don't really see it like a sexy sports car, and most think of it as a hatchback. However, in spite of all of the above, VW has still brought at least one to US soil recently and handed it over to a few journalists to gauge opinions.

CNET did its own review for the R, and they too were left wondering why VW didn't at least give it a chance, liking the car overall. I think they're definitely thinking about US sales (at least for the next generation model), otherwise it would not have been brought over (along with a Euro-spec Golf GTI Mk. VII). Automobile magazine also took the car for a quick spin.

That probably means VW's eyes and ears are checking out the automotive blogs and news sites scene for feedback, so if you want to make your voice heard, you can use the comments section below.

Mercedes-Benz Confirms S-Class Convertible Based on S-Class Coupe

Posted: 28 Sep 2013 07:22 AM PDT

It wasn't exactly a secret that Mercedes-Benz was planning a convertible version of the new S-Class, but now it's official. Mercedes-Benz product development boss Thomas Weber told Automotive News that the automaker will build a convertible version of its new flagship sedan.

The executive said the model will be based on the S-Class Coupe concept showcased at this month's Frankfurt Motor Show. He revealed that the production version of the S-Class coupe will go on sale in early 2014 in Europe, while the convertible is expected to arrive about a year later. In the U.S., both models should arrive shortly after.

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class convertible will feature a fabric top and will be offered with twin-turbocharged V8 and V12 engines. It will be the first open-top S-Class since the W111 Cabriolet, sold between 1961 and 1971.

Basically, this means the S-Class cabriolet will be a two-door and not a four-door, as it was rumored before (unless they're planning to do both…). You may remember that in 2007 Mercedes-Benz revealed a four-door convertible study called Ocean Drive, which was based on the previous-generation W221 S-Class. This concept led many to assume Mercedes will build a four-door S-Class cabriolet.

It remains to be seen how Mercedes-Benz will market the S-Class cabriolet, since the brand already has a luxurious convertible in its lineup, the SL roadster. However, the SL only offers two seats, while the S-Class cabriolet will likely offer four real seats and will be oriented more on comfort and luxury than on sportiness.
