This Is How Much You Can Shrink a Car and Still Have it be Street Legal

Posted: 29 Sep 2013 09:59 AM PDT

Move over Peel P50 and custom-made Top Gear microcar, because there's a new and even smaller kid on the block! As I'm sure you all know, the Peel was the bulbous little blue car driven by Jeremy Clarkson into the BBC the actual offices, in an episode of the show, from 2007.

However, he probably would have been even happier with the open-air experience of this one-off car created by custom car builder Austin Coulson, from Texas.

About the same size as a child's electric-powered stroller, but with much bigger and sturdier wheels, it can just accommodate a full-sized human, though I imagine this would be huge amounts of fun for actual kids to drive around. That, of course, could only be done on private property, because Austin's creation is genuinely the world's smallest road-worthy car; it's got lights, turn signals, approved windshield and wipers, and even a lap belt.

And these are not just mere claims by the builder, and the little car is actually attested by the Guinness World Records as being what it's claimed to be. Granted, it's not an actual production model like the Peel, but it is smaller, and just as cool. They even made a video about it, which you'll find posted below.

Volvo Concept Coupe May Be Built in Small Series, Report Says

Posted: 29 Sep 2013 07:17 AM PDT

The Volvo Concept Coupe was undoubtedly one of the stars of this year's Frankfurt Motor Show, pushing many to wonder whether it will reach production or simply remain a beautiful study.

Good news may be on the way since Volvo is said to consider a limited production run of the Concept Coupe following the enthusiastic reception of the car. A report from German car magazine Auto Bild says Volvo's top managers were impressed by the car's success in Frankfurt and are now analyzing the possibility to build it in a small series.

The report doesn't quote any sources but says a decision on this matter could be taken at the beginning of next year. If the Concept Coupe will get the green light, the magazine says production may be commissioned to Bertone. It remains to be seen whether Volvo will decide to build the coupe, since the company didn't state such plans when it unveiled the car in Frankfurt.

However, it's not hard to imagine a production version of the Concept Coupe, as the design is more down to earth than futuristic. Penned by Thomas Ingenlath, the P1800-inspired study previews Volvo's new design language, with the upcoming XC90 being the first production model to draw inspiration from it.

The concept features a hybrid system consisting of a 2.0-liter Drive-E petrol engine with a supercharger and a turbo driving the front wheels and an electric motor turning the rear wheels. Combined system output is 400 hp and more than 600 Nm (442 lb-ft) of peak torque.
