Mercedes-Benz Won’t Build Smaller Cars than the A-Class, At Least For Now

Posted: 16 Sep 2013 04:05 PM PDT

Mercedes' expansion into front-wheel drive territory and smaller segments will not result in cars smaller than the A-Class, at least for the medium term. This is what Daimler AG CEO Dieter Zetsche said, responding to rumors about Mercedes-Benz planning to fill up the gap between the A-Class and the upcoming Smart ForFour.

As the ForFour will reportedly be less than 3,500mm (137.8in) long, it would leave space for an intermediary model between it and the A-Class, which measures 4,292mm (168.9in) in length. However, Mercedes-Benz doesn't plan to take that route.

BMW's smallest crossover to date, was only just updated in 2012, three years after it was launched on the market, at which point it was introduced for the first time in North America, but the Munich-based company is already deep into the development of its F48-codenamed successor.

By signing Kimi Raikkonen, Scuderia Ferrari seems to have given up on its decades-old policy of having a leading driver and a supporting driver. While nobody knows what Raikkonen's contract says, it's hard to imagine two former world champions accepting to be No. 2. BMW Says No M Engineers Worked on i8, will Keep M and i Sub-Brands Separate

Posted: 16 Sep 2013 12:45 PM PDT

BMW's range of cars is already a bit confusing, and I personally find lots of models in their lineup as irrelevant, and overlapping. Thankfully, they're not going to propagate this to the i sub-brand, and thus avoid creating extra confusion. They will be keeping their sporty and eco lines of cars separate, and according to a report published by Car Advice, "No M engineers worked on the hybrid supercar project." Read more »

Renault-Nissan CEO Says Worst Has Passed for European Car Market

Posted: 16 Sep 2013 12:20 PM PDT

The European car market is not what it used to be as it has been severely affected by the global credit crisis, a phenomenon that has caused grief in many parts of the world, bringing each country's own economy to its knees. Greece was (and still is) hardest hit at first glance, even thou they're attempting to build off-road-capable supercars, while other countries are making fewer cars. Perhaps a bit of optimism about the whole situation would not hurt at all… Read more »

The Coda Sedan EV is Kind of Back, But Not Really…

Posted: 16 Sep 2013 10:30 AM PDT

Coda, the LA-based startup EV manufacturer, went bust in May of this year, and decided to try and apply its technology for more stationary uses, not that many people actually cared or even knew about it, but it happened.

It was hard to justify missing this paricular automaker, because they sold very few of an average-looking, average-priced, middle of the road EV, for those who didn't want everybody to know that they're saving the planet.

Watch a Super Cool Woman Crash a Nissan GT-R During Drag Race

Posted: 16 Sep 2013 09:31 AM PDT

When it comes to high-powered performance sports cars racing in the rain (aquaplaning), if you lose it, you lose it, and sans the ultra-rare scenario when all the stars align together to help you out in the luckiest of ways, a crash is highly likely and no electronics or advanced all-wheel drive systems can save you or your ride.

This recently happened to an unidentified female driver of a Nissan GT-R during the Unlimited 500+ drag race event in Moscow. The crash was chillingly scary as the Japanese sports car hit the metal safety bars on the track head on sending it in a continuous spin until it ended up on the bars again.

Frankfurt Motor Show visitors that happened to be at the main entry of the exhibition on Saturday, September 14, at 3 pm, witnessed a similar scene. Read more »

Nissan Kicks Off European Production of New Note Hatch

Posted: 16 Sep 2013 08:03 AM PDT

So, raise your hand if you know which brand has the biggest ever car plant in the United Kingdom. Of course, being that this report is about Nissan, it won't surprise you to learn that it's the Japanese carmarker, but that doesn't make the feat any less impressive as we are talking about a foreign manufacturer and not one of the many domestic brands in the long history of the UK auto industry.

Now, Nissan has added another model to its Sunderland Plant, the new generation of the B-segment competing Note, which made its European premiere at the Geneva Motor Show this past March.

Spied: Peugeot Testing Hotter Version of 308 Hatch, is it the GTi or R?

Posted: 16 Sep 2013 05:54 AM PDT

In Europe, spicier versions of popular hatchbacks in the B- (supermini) and C-segments (compact) isn't that much (at least not always) about direct sales as it is about prestige and building a more positive, sportier and younger image around the entire range, which in turn, boosts their sales.

Peugeot also has a tradition in designing hot hatches, even though some of its more recent creations have failed to inspire much of a following. At this week's Frankfurt Motor Show, the French brand is floating around a concept for a carbonfibre-clad 308 with the "R" moniker that borrows the new RCZ R's 266hp (270PS) 1.6-liter turbocharged inline-four.
