Clean Diesels are Experiencing a Renaissance in the U.S. as Sales Rise by 25.6 Percent

Posted: 12 Dec 2012 05:42 PM PST

In contrast to Europe, where they account for more than half of new cars sold, diesel-powered models hadn't really caught on with U.S. new car buyers. In the past two years, though, numbers show that more and more Americans recognize the benefits of the new generation of "clean" diesel engines.

That is, the advances in diesel technology have resulted in today's diesels being nothing like their crude forebears of the '80s, while they are also up to 40 percent more fuel efficient that comparable gasoline-powered versions.

According to data from HybridCars.com and Baum and Associates, sales of diesel-powered cars in the States increased by 25.6 percent in 2012, almost double the total market's 13.8 percent increase rate.

Slippery when Wet: Porsche Demonstrates New 911 Carrera 4 in Adverse Road Conditions

Posted: 12 Dec 2012 01:35 PM PST

Even Porsche itself knows that, if it weren't for its large fan and more importantly, customer base, the 911 would be long gone and replaced by something that adheres to, rather than disregarding, the laws of Physics.

No matter how you put it, letting the engine hanging out behind the rear axle may provide superior traction from a standstill but, when it comes to cornering, it creates a pendulum effect that's hard to contain.

Posted: 12 Dec 2012 12:03 PM PST

Even though most motoring journalists labeled the Audi R8 "the everyday supercar", confirming its raison d'être, Motor Trend senior features editor Jonny Lieberman kindly disagreed.

That's because he found the R8's R Tronic semi-automatic transmission too jerky and abrupt in its gear changes. True, there's also a six-speed manual gearbox, but apparently, Lieberman likes the auto option in the cars he intends to drive around every day.

Posted: 12 Dec 2012 11:23 AM PST

Next time these two bright youngsters decide to play Rambo with one of their fellow citizens, they just might want to make sure they have the…necessary tools placed in the boot of their car.

For about a minute, we see two compact sedans, a Chevrolet and a Daewoo if we're not hugely mistaken (not that it matters, since they're both the same), chasing each other and generally acting hazardous and completely foolish on the road.
