Watch Real Life Mad Max Terrorize an Australian Driver During an Extreme Road Rage Incident

Posted: 18 Dec 2012 06:05 PM PST

With all the incidents filmed on Russian roads, (you can head over to Jalopnik for some of the best dashcam clips of 2012 – we're preparing our own list, too), we rarely say this about a road rage incident, but WOW.

There's road rage, there's psychotic and then there's "this windshield ain't going to stop me punching your face" kind of rage, which makes Mad Max and Toecutter look like Care Bears…

We only get to hear and watch one side of the story in this incident as the perpetrator has yet to be interviewed, or captured by the police, for that matter, but here's what went on.

First Drive in NZ: All-New Subaru Forester High On Refinement, Space

Posted: 18 Dec 2012 05:04 PM PST

Just been driving the new Forester XT turbo in New Zealand, and it's the first Subaru Turbo I've driven with a CVT.

I had mixed feelings about how that transmission would work with the turbo, but I guess that the fact that Subaru's new third generation Lineartronic is going to be used with its new range of European market turbodiesels in both the Outback and Forester later in the year means that it will take the torque.

I noticed no disconcerting flare - often a bugbear with CVTs and more powerful engines - and loved the way the car stepped smoothly off the line, settling into low-revving cruise mode for town and around work, and open-road driving very decorously.

Well-chosen gearing allows the Forester to surf along on its low to mid-revolution biased torque curve, which will allow pretty useful economy in normal running, while the surge of energy on tap when you mash the throttle is very pleasing. With a rise in engine pitch, the Forester XT quickly catches up with itself in that distinctive CVT way, and dispatched overtaking maneuvers with great aplomb.

New Viper Loses to Corvette ZR1 in MT Test, SRT Boss Tweets His Frustration

Posted: 18 Dec 2012 07:50 PM PST

The current, sixth-generation Corvette is about to be replaced as its all-new successor is just around the corner, being already teased by GM itself and due to break cover at the upcoming Detroit Motor Show next month. It's about time, too, as the C6 has been around since 2005.

As it's getting ready to exit the stage, though, another player comes charging in. In fact, it's the only other car from Detroit that can lay claim to be an American supercar: the all-new SRT Viper.

It would be unfair to the 'Vette to even think about pitting them against each other, wouldn't you agree?

Watch a Mudslide Knock Down and Derail a Train in Washington

Posted: 18 Dec 2012 03:54 PM PST

You could say that videographer John Hill was at the right time at the right place when a mudslide hit and derailed a Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNFS) freight train between Seattle and Everett in Washington State on Monday evening, but then again, one might have expected that this would eventually have happened... Detroit Three Offer Four-Figure Price Incentives to Clear up Inventories

Posted: 18 Dec 2012 02:41 PM PST

Fancy a brand-new 2013 Ford Taurus for US$5,000 less than list price? How about four grand off a 2012 Chrysler 200? As the year inexorably comes to its close, U.S. dealerships and, in some cases, manufacturers themselves, are offering price incentives in order to clear up stock.

According to a report from The Detroit News, last week a man in front of Matthews-Hargreaves Chevrolet in Royal Oak, Michigan waved a sign reading, "rebates up to $8,000".

So, are Detroit carmakers engaging in a price war like in the days of yore that, eventually, led to ruining their business?

Did You Notice Something Out of Place in this Picture?

Posted: 18 Dec 2012 01:58 PM PST

Here's a hint; unlike the original Fiat Cinquecento produced from 1957 to 1975, which sported a two-cylinder, air-cooled engine positioned at the rear end of the car turning the wheels right below it, its spiritual successor, the Nuova 500 of the 21st century, features a traditional layout with the engine mounted up front driving the front wheels.

Well, as the crew from Jalopnik eloquently put it on their posting, "someone is living in the past"…

GM Idles 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Production in the U.S. as Inventory Piles Up

Posted: 18 Dec 2012 01:29 PM PST

It's no secret that the Chevrolet Malibu compact saloon hasn't been received as well as GM hoped for, be that by the automotive press or the consumers.

That's why earlier this month, GM CEO Dan Akerson admitted that the company is going following in the footsteps of Honda with the Civic and give the Malibu "a mid-cycle enhancement" just 18 months after its launch.

Spied: Maserati to Challenge BMW 5- and 6-Series Gran Coupe with New Ghibli Sports Sedan

Posted: 18 Dec 2012 12:51 PM PST

If you find the new Quattroporte too big, too Grande, and too expensive, but still want to drive something with the Trident logo, which for many buyers, has a higher cache than Germany's BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi brands, then Maserati is preparing just what the doctor ordered.

It's name is Ghibli, and unlike other pompous plans from the Fiat Group (see Alfa Romeo), this one is for real and it will make its world premiere either at the Geneva Motor Show in March or at the Shanghai auto show in April.

A heavily dressed prototype of the Ghibli sports sedan was nabbed undergoing winter testing in Europe. The camouflage hides the design details of the car, but it is clear that the Ghibli will be more compact than the 5,263mm (207.2 inches) long Quattroporte featuring shorter front and rear overhangs and wheelbase.

Despite the difference in size, with the Ghibli measuring just under 5 meters (~196 inches) in length, it will ride on a modified version of the Quattroprote's platform, which itself, is loosely based on the Chrysler 300 chassis having received a number of updates.

Man Behind Dacia Logan Tasked With Creating Renault’s New US$5,500 India Car

Posted: 18 Dec 2012 12:04 PM PST

The Indian new car market is far from negligible, accounting for 2.6 million registrations annually. Suzuki, with its Maruti subsidiary, offers cars starting below 250,000 rupees (US$5,600) and practically rules the market with 1 million sales per year.

Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn is determined to get a bigger slice of the pie than the measly 3 percent the two brands command with their models that are made at the local Chennai plant.

Lucky Scooter Rider Survives Highway Bump Unscathed

Posted: 18 Dec 2012 11:36 AM PST

Here's another tale from Asian roads - one that has a happy ending, though, as you will soon see for yourself, it could have easily gone the other way with painfully disastrous results…

The driver of the car, the sounds of which reminds us of a Subaru model, was going faster than what the road traffic permitted, and at the same time, a scooter rider in the middle lane failed to look over his shoulder while changing lanes.

Investors Value Mercedes-Benz Cars at Less than Half Compared to Arch-Rival BMW

Posted: 18 Dec 2012 10:59 AM PST

It's been more than a year since Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche vowed that Mercedes-Benz would reclaim the number one place in the premium segment from BMW by the end of the decade. He even sent a letter to his employees, saying that the company "should be far ahead of the pack".

For the time being, though, the gap is widening, instead of closing and the three-pointed star is still trailing both BMW and Audi in the race for the number one spot.

The latest report by Bloomberg says that market capitalization at BMW is up to €45 billion (US$58.8 billion) compared to €42.2 billion (US$55.5 billion) for Daimler. After subtracting around €20 billion (US$26.3 billion) for its truck business, investors value the Mercedes-Benz passenger car division at €22 billion (US$28.9 billion), or less than half the value of its Munich-based rival.

What if someone applied the techniques of parkour on cars instead of buildings and other obstacles and structures, what would you call the sport? Well, Carkour, of course, silly….

We don't know this young man's name, though, we can assume that after his thrill-seeking escapade, which one or more of his friends filmed in detail, owners of the cars he jumped on, over, and even in one case, in and out of the passenger area, most likely freshened up their French vocabulary to find several names to call him…
