EVO Drag Races Shelby GT500 Mustang and Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupe

Posted: 19 Dec 2012 06:17 PM PST

The Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupe and the Ford Shelby GT500 Mustang are two different cars from two separate schools of thought that we seriously doubt will ever be cross-shopped by consumers even in North America where they are both available. In Europe, even if one wanted to, you can't officially buy the Ford.

Despite their many differences, there's one thing that both cars lay claim to being good at: straight line acceleration, and it is this aspect of the two sports models that UK car magazine EVO set out to put to the test with a good ol' fashion drag race.

Most Revealing Spy Shots of 2014 BMW X5 SUV Yet

Posted: 19 Dec 2012 05:23 PM PST

BMW is one of many carmakers that gradually ease up on the camouflage on their prototype models as they edge closer to revealing the production version.

Such is the case with the next X5 that's due to launch next year, possibly at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September, though we wouldn't rule out an earlier reveal.

In these fresh scoop photos, the third generation of the X5 has done away with many layers of foil wraps allowing us to see the sharper and more protruding nose with the production headlamps, the elongated shape of which bring to mind those found on the F30 3-Series, and the more upright double kidney grille.

Kitty Has an Exhaust Pipe Addiction…

Posted: 19 Dec 2012 04:40 PM PST

You know your cat may be having some kind of serious issues when it pokes its face into a running SUV's tail pipe and takes a few whiffs of the exhaust gasses.

We are going take a wild guess here and assume that this crazy feline is from Russia – well, at least that's what the title of the video suggests.

Honda Gets its Mojo Back: Consumer Reports Puts 2013 Accord on Top of its Class

Posted: 19 Dec 2012 04:15 PM PST

Despite the (in)famous 2012 Civic episode, there seems to be no bad feelings between Honda and Consumer Reports (CR). The publication may have dropped the 2012 Civic from its recommended list pressuring for a quick redesign, but Honda can relax as far as its U.S. market best-seller is concerned.

In fact, it may even smile as CR has put the 2013 Accord at the top of its class in four-cylinder guise while it notes that the V6 version is "challenging the Toyota Camry for the top spot" in its ratings.

Spy Shots: Meet the All-New BMW 2-Series Coupe, the 4-Series' Smaller Sibling

Posted: 19 Dec 2012 03:39 PM PST

At the end of November, our trusty spies caught up with a prototype model of the upcoming 2-Series Convertible with a traditional canvas top. Now, they've managed to meet up with the coupe version of the series,  about a year ahead of its market launch.

The 2-Series, which is to the 1-Series what the new 4-Series is to the 3-Series, will be the second model in BMW's range to adopt the firm's new nomenclature that calls for the use of an even number for sportier looking body styles, and an odd number for traditional saloons, hatchbacks, estates, crossovers and SUVs.

While covered in camouflage, we can still see that the 2-Series Coupe test car is bigger than the current 1-Series Coupe and sports a less pronounced booty.

Good news for those of you who don't like the second generation 1-Series hatchback's ginormous headlamps, as the prototype coupe appears to feature a sleeker set of lights. Like the 4-Series Concept, the 2-Series also gets a prominent hockey-stick-like vents right behind the front wheels.

Posted: 19 Dec 2012 02:33 PM PST

What do you do when you're not having the best time in your (patchy, anyway) history and your new owner has put your new car program on ice? That's an easy one: you simply roll out a "special" edition of one of your existing models.

The above applies to Lotus that has just launched the "Sports Racer" edition of its Evora mid-engine coupe. So, what is so special about this Evora that makes Lotus claim it's aimed to serious drivers (sic) that want to get "incredibly excited"?

2013 Toyota Avalon is the First Vehicle in the World to Offer Qi Wireless In-Car Charging

Posted: 19 Dec 2012 01:53 PM PST

After finding their way into our homes and offices, wireless charging systems for cell phones and other electronic devices are now beginning to make their appearance in automobiles.

General Motors has already introduced a wireless cell phone mat and so has Chrysler's Mopar division, but Toyota is laying claims to the "world's first application of Qi wireless in-car charging" as part of a Technology Package for both the 2013 Avalon and Avalon Hybrid models.

We reached out to Chrysler to ask whether its already available wireless charging system adheres to the "Qi" interface standards and we will post an update once we receive a reply, but for now, we will take Toyota's word for it.

Maserati Rumored to be Readying a Compact SUV to Rival the Porsche Macan for 2016

Posted: 19 Dec 2012 01:06 PM PST

Fiat is determined to make Maserati a serious player in the luxury segment. This means expanding its range, which until now, is based on just two models and their variations, considerably in order to attract new customers.

Recently, company CEO Harald Wester said the Modena-based automaker wants to increase its annual sales nearly nine times (!), to 50,000 units, until the end of 2015.

The sixth-generation Quattroporte flagship luxury saloon that has already broken cover and will make its official debut at the 2013 NAIAS next month is just the first step. It will be followed late next year by the smaller Ghibli saloon to compete with models such as the BMW 5-Series and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

Posted: 19 Dec 2012 11:25 AM PST

When should one sell their stocks? Well, that's a question faced by each and every stock holder around the globe. The U.S. Department of the Treasury, which after the 2009 bailout, owns 32 percent of General Motor stock, has been deliberating the issue for some time and decided to take action today.

GM and the U.S. Treasury both announced on Wednesday that the former plans to buy back 200 million shares of its common stock for the price of US$27.50 per share, for a total of US$5.5 billion. The price agreed is, as GM notes, 7.9 percent above the closing price on December 18.

We guess everybody is entitled to a mistake on the road, but when you try to run away from your "mistake" only to repeat it moments later, then it's not called a mistake but more like a case of drunk driving…

If you are patient enough to keep watching the video through the 18-second mark, you will see a full-size black sedan rear-ending a small commercial truck before the driver attempts to drive away on the opposite lane of the road only to smash into…another car.

Arctic Circle Snow No Match for Nissan GT-R

Posted: 19 Dec 2012 10:37 AM PST

Back in the 1990s, the press liked to call the Acura / Honda NSX the world's first, and at the time, only everyday supercar, which may hold true if you compare it with a Ferrari 348 and take into account only performance and reliability, but was it really a true everyday supercar?

Well, if you prefer to drive with one passenger alone and only during good weather, then the answer is yes, but if you want to fit more people inside and use the car under adverse weather conditions, then the NSX will no doubt disappoint.
