Renault Reportedly Drops Plans for a Mercedes E-Class-based Sedan

Posted: 12 Mar 2013 06:35 AM PDT

As part of its partnership deal with Daimler AG, Renault had plans to build a large luxury sedan, using the platform of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. However, it seems the French carmaker has given up on its ambition to launch a new executive saloon, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal (WSJ).

While one would assume Renault's reluctance to enter the premium car segment is due to its unfortunate past experience (how could we forget the Vel Satis?), the automaker concluded the plan doesn't make business sense for the company.

Geneva Show Hypercar Poll: Ferrari LaFerrari vs. Lamborghini Veneno vs. McLaren P1

Posted: 11 Mar 2013 06:00 PM PDT

In a few years' time, the 2013 Geneva Motor Show will be remembered as the venue in which a new breed of supercar was introduced to the world: the hybrid with more than 900HP and emissions less than a conventional one with, say, less than half the firepower.

Both Ferrari and McLaren chose the Swiss event to unveil their new hypercars. Since the latter was practically identical to last year's concept while the Italians kept their cards close to their chest, the prancing horse premiere was the most eagerly awaited.

Posted: 11 Mar 2013 04:59 PM PDT

We have a new quiz for you, courtesy of Carscoops reader Jonathan P., who nabbed these pictures of a camouflaged test car at a parking lot. For the record, we received these photos from Jonathan at the end of last month, but we placed them on ice, if you will, because of our heavy workload with the Geneva Motor Show.

Now, we could tell you which model we believe it is (no, it's not the Carscoops 2000), but where would the fun be in that?

Sergio Pininfarina Talks about His Collaboration with Enzo Ferrari in 2006 Interview

Posted: 11 Mar 2013 04:40 PM PDT

When it comes to automotive success stories, there are very few (if any) that can compare with the collaboration between Ferrari and Pininfarina. It all started when two great men, entrepreneur Enzo Ferrari and coachbuilder Giovanni Battista Pininfarina, crossed paths in the early 1950s. It may sound like the beginning of an ordinary story, but it wasn't at all like that. Read more »

Posted: 11 Mar 2013 01:37 PM PDT

Auto shows generate a lot of online buzz, especially when important new cars are launched. One would expect that at least one of the supercars unveiled this year in Geneva received the most media attention, with Ferrari's LaFerrari being the main candidate. However, reality is little bit more complicated than that.

According to a study from media monitoring firm Kantar Media, the car that swept journalists off their feet at the Geneva show was none other than the mundane Volkswagen Golf!

Tesla Pushes Back Model X Launch for Late 2014

Posted: 11 Mar 2013 01:29 PM PDT

Tesla officials have announced that, due to the high demand potential shown by the Model S all-electric sedan, they have pushed back the launch of the Model X crossover/SUV by around one year.

The move was made in order to give the Model S some time to "mature" on the market, if you will, so it now has the whole of 2013 to attract attention towards the world of EVs in general, and Tesla in particular.

Spy Shots: New Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe Takes Up Skiing Lessons in Sweden

Posted: 11 Mar 2013 11:39 AM PDT

There's a replacement for the current Mercedes-Benz CL-Class luxury 2+2 coupe in the horizon, and as you probably have heard already (we'll repeat it just in case you missed out), it won't carry the same name, as the Stuttgart-based carmaker has made the decision to use the S-Class Coupe moniker instead.

The well-camouflaged model seen in these latest photos was spotted undergoing winter testing in Northern Sweden. From these images, Benz's new upscale coupe appears to have a more muscular appearance than the current CL with pronounced rear fenders, a sweeping roofline, a rakish rear window and a strong front end.

Ford Handling Specialist Hoons the New Fiesta ST on the Lommel Track

Posted: 11 Mar 2013 09:38 AM PDT

The 2013 Ford Fiesta ST is the second model in a new line of Sport Technology-branded models aimed at a global audience. Following in the footsteps of its appreciated bigger brother, the Focus ST, the Fiesta ST needs to be fun, very quick and cheaper to buy than the competition, like the new Renault Clio RS 200 EDC, Peugeot 208 Gti, VW Polo GTi or its derivatives.

The Clio is the hottest of the bunch, but the Fiesta is only 20 hp down on the French model, it undercuts it on price, and with the recent facelift, it looks quite racy and modern, as well.

All-New Mitsubishi Pajero Still Three Years Away – Will Go Hybrid

The Mitsubishi Pajero (or Montero in the US) has been around in its current form since 1999. It did receive a major overhaul in 2006, which brought it up to date, with revised styling and new safety features, but the SUV was basically the same underneath. Even if you count the 2006 update as a new generation, it's still almost seven years old and in need of a rethink. Read more »

To say there's something incredibly disturbing about this video that was filmed in Vietnam, is probably a huge understatement.

According to media reports from the Southeast Asian country, the shirtless man seen in the clip was arrested and handcuffed purportedly for sitting backwards on the motorcycle (at least that's what we understand, if you think you can help with the translation, tell us in the comments), which itself, wouldn't be newsworthy.
