Designer Reimagines Fiat 127 for the 21st Century as the 500's Big Brother

Posted: 21 Mar 2013 05:51 PM PDT

The Fiat 127 was a replacement for the pretty 850, and it was built between 1971 and 1983, when it was replaced by the Uno. It followed a simple design strategy of clean shapes and lines with good proportions. This is why if you see one on the street today, particularly in a nice color, you will notice it.

Now the 127 has been reimagined for the 21st century as a big brother to the successful 500, and could theoretically be built, as it has been designed to not only look as close as possible to the original model, but to also be built on the same platform that underpins the Fiat Punto and Alfa Romeo MiTo. It is the work of David Obendorfer, who also gave us this modern Renault 4.

Audi Rolls Out its Five Millionth Quattro Model, a Diesel A6 Allroad

Posted: 21 Mar 2013 04:09 PM PDT

Audi is a pioneer of all-wheel drive systems, which it first introduced to rallying in 1981 (development of the quattro system had begun in 1976), then to its regular production cars.

Over the years, their own range of vehicles has grown considerably, and now includes a whopping 140 different quattro variants. More impressively, around 43 percent of all new Audis bought in 2012 were fitted with its quattro system, up from 38 percent in 2010.

Posted: 21 Mar 2013 03:38 PM PDT

Pairing a modern iPad tablet with an old-school, first generation Opel Vectra may look like an impossible thing to do for most people. We're not talking about fitting the iPad into the Vectra's dashboard, but controlling the car via an iPad app. Read more »

Dealers Say All-New 2014 Mazda3 Coming to the U.S. This Fall

Posted: 21 Mar 2013 03:18 PM PDT

Earlier this week, we shared a speculative rendering we made of the third-generation Mazda3 compact hatchback based on sightings of camouflaged prototypes, what we know about the carmaker's new "kodo" (Japanese for "soul of motion") design language and our own intel.

Now we learn that we could see the actual car arrive in U.S. showrooms as early as this fall. Automotive News spoke to three separate Mazda dealers, who told the publication that they learned about the autumn launch plan of the redesigned Mazda3 from the Japanese carmaker itself. The news agency said it contacted a Mazda spokesman about the story, but he (or she) declined to comment.

What’s With All The Teaser Photos Showing Nothing?

Posted: 21 Mar 2013 01:40 PM PDT

It may sound like a question from the Seinfeld show, but in my view, it's a legitimate one. Hardly a day passes by without a new teaser photo or video distributed to auto media outlets by carmakers' PR departments.

Nowadays, most new models are previewed by at least one teaser, which most of the times, shows the car either completely covered in a sheet, or hidden under a blanket of black smoke. That's it, nothing more.

Scoop: New Maserati Ghibli Sports Sedan Wears Production Body

Posted: 21 Mar 2013 12:56 PM PDT

The last time our spy photographers turned their cameras on Maserati's engineers, they were out in the snow driving a test mule of the Ghibli wearing the body of the Quattroporte on the production model's platform.

Now that the weather is getting better in Europe, the Italians rolled out an actual prototype of the Ghibli, albeit under heavy disguise to prevent prying eyes from seeing the final exterior treatment.

More Photos of the Jason Castriota-Designed 2013 Saab 9-3 Surface Online

Posted: 21 Mar 2013 12:01 PM PDT

The Saab 9-3 Phoenix, which we first saw via a few low quality photos a while back, is the near-production-ready example of what was to become Saab's sales booster. Sadly, it never had the chance to see the light of day, and while there still is interest for the Saab brand, nothing seems to be happening. Read more »

These Are Probably Some of the Luckiest Gals in Belarus

Posted: 21 Mar 2013 11:40 AM PDT

We'll cut to the chase with the following video. No, it's not from Russia but from neighboring Belarus and yes, it's an accident. Dash cams have produced another YouTube blockbuster, and this time the scenario is rather simple. A reckless driver in a Renault Megane Sedan driving too fast for city-traffic runs a red light and hits what appears to be a Lada that was crossing the intersection on a green light. Read more »

What Do You Think of this Hamann-Prepped BMW M5 F10? [w/Video]

Posted: 21 Mar 2013 10:49 AM PDT

What is that we hear; you didn't find the looks of Hamann Motorsport's new BMW M5 F10 "Mi5Sion" model extreme enough? No problem says Hamann, which displayed this limited edition of the Bavarian carmaker's performance saloon at the Auto Trader Live luxury car show in Dubai.

Hamann went all crazy on the individualization of the M5 changing, or in its own opinion, enhancing the look of most body panels, from the vented hood and bespoke double kidney grille, to the rear diffuser and the double spoilers at the back.

LaFerrari-Based Maserati MC12-Successor is On the Drawing Board

Posted: 21 Mar 2013 08:56 AM PDT

We remember the Maserati MC12 supercar, but it was never really popular with enthusiasts, despite being based on the advanced Ferrari Enzo. It looked like a racing car, with very long front and rear overhangs, and a big fixed wing on the back – it was probably extremely difficult to park, as well (not that it matters…).

Still, it retained the carbon construction of the Ferrari, and kept its engine, albeit detuned from 651 hp, to 620 hp. It was extremely fast, but just a little bit slower than the Enzo.

Posted: 21 Mar 2013 07:59 AM PDT

Several hundred workers at the main Dacia plant, located in Mioveni, Romania, went on strike yesterday, fearing mass layoffs due to contracts not being signed in time, and criticizing the management for overworking them and treating them "like slaves".

According to the local media, they are asked to build a car every 40 seconds. They also decided to launch the strike because their request for a 25 percent increase in their pay went unnoticed.

It's well known fact that Russia is king when it comes to dash-cams, which explains the number of videos circulating around the internet, but not the incidents themselves – well, at least not always, especially the crazy ones.

In the United States, there aren't near as many dash-cams fitted on cars (yet), but there are more than enough mobile phones with recording capabilities…

Mercedes-Benz Brings Together All of its AMG Models for a Mechanical Symphony

Posted: 21 Mar 2013 06:23 AM PDT

When you have such a wide range of performance models like Mercedes-Benz does with its AMG lineup, it's only natural that you come up with novel ideas to promote your products.

Bringing together the entire product range, from the C63 AMG to the brutal G63 AMG SUV and the "gullwing" SLS AMG (well, sans the newly announced A45 AMG and its four-door brethren, the CLA 45 AMG), to fire up their engines at the same time and create a mechanical orchestra of sorts, sounds good in our book.

The countdown for the world premiere of the new Audi A3 Sedan is on, as the brand with the four-rings published a teaser video on its new online channel, 'Audi MediaTV', in which we see the car hidden under a white sheet while also getting a glimpse of the compact model's interior and rear seats.
