Meet the Toyota 86 / Scion FR-S GRMN SPORTS FR Concept PLATINUM [w/Video]

Posted: 10 Jan 2013 06:05 PM PST

To be frank, Toyota got it right the first time with the original concepts for the 86 and the FR-S, but for one reason or another, it toned down the design of both models when time came to introduce the production variants.

While no doubt a success, many people have also complained about the lack of power from the Subaru-sourced 2.0-liter naturally aspirated flat four that generates 200-horses.

Toyota's racing and tuning partner Gazoo Racing is looking to rectify both issues with a new concept unveiled today at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2013 named the 'GRMN SPORTS FR Concept PLATINUM'.

On the styling front, Gazoo Racing devised a new front end with different headlamps, bumper and vented hood, while it also revised the rear end of the coupe that gains newly shaped taillights, a bumper with a diffuser and a re-sculptured boot lid housing a ginormous wing.

Maserati, in particular, was lashed because it had said it planned to open a dealership in Tehran.

Posted: 10 Jan 2013 12:15 PM PST

Why would an automaker ponder if we remember one of its past models and whether it will bring it back? Well, if you ask us, the only reasonable explanation is because it actually plans to do so.

Case in point, a Lexus posting on the brand's official Facebook page where the Japanese carmaker states:

"Do you remember the '02 IS 300 Sport Cross with its style, utility and performance? Will we bring it back? Watch the 2014 IS premiere on Facebook in 6 days to find out!"

Of all the passenger cars that come to mind, a stretched Lincoln Town Car limousine must be one of the most inappropriate vehicles to be in at a McDonald's drive-through.

It's not hard to imagine why, nonetheless, someone insisted on riding his stretch limo to a local drive-through instead of simply parking it and walking a couple of feet into the store to order his meal…or at least he attempted to, as surprise, surprise, he experienced some problems.

Posted: 10 Jan 2013 09:34 AM PST

Mercedes-Benz's CLS four-door coupe is, in layman's terms, a much more stylish version of the E-Class upon which it is based. Thus, after revising the E63 AMG, it made perfect sense to apply the same updates to the CLS range-topper.

The 2014 model year CLS 63 AMG gets the same engine updates and all-wheel drive system, both in the four-door Coupe and five-door Shooting Brake variants.

This means that power and torque figures are now 550HP and 531 lb-ft (720 Nm) respectively for the standard model, and 577HP and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm) for the optional S-Model package.

But as it turns out, it's not only humans that won't budge sometimes, as certain members of the animal kingdom do the same, as evidenced by this video from a dashboard mounted camera.

Mercedes-Benz Presents New E63 AMG, Gains AWD and 577HP S-Model Options

Posted: 10 Jan 2013 05:03 AM PST

Apparently, giving the E 63 AMG a new face like the rest of the updated 2014 E-Class range that will bow at next week's Detroit Motor Show and adding its 4MATIC all-wheel drive as an option wasn't enough for Mercedes-Benz's performance division.

The Affalterbach crew fiddled around with the E63 AMG's twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V8, too, increasing its boost pressure from 0.9 to 1.0 bar. As a result, it now it puts out 550HP (557PS) and 531 lb-ft (720 Nm) of torque, an increase of 32HP and 15 lb-ft (20 Nm) over the outgoing model.

Since the standard E 63 AMG, which is available in saloon and estate forms, now has the same ponies as the previous car's optional AMG performance pack, they've also added the S-Model option that's available with all-wheel drive and increases power to 577HP and torque to 590 lb-ft (800 Nm).

The standard model accelerates from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in just 4.2 seconds, a figure that drops to 3.7 seconds (3.8 for the estate) in 4MATIC versions. The S-Model is a tenth of a second quicker, completing the sprint in 3.6 seconds for the saloon and 3.7 seconds for the estate, while all models have their top speed electronically limited at 250 km/h (155 mph).
