At Last! Awesome Flying DeLorean is here to Take Us Back to the Future! [w/Videos] Posted: 17 Jan 2013 06:16 PM PST When Marty McFly and "Doc" Brown took us for a second cinematic trip back and forth into time with their late 1980s flick "Back to the Future Part II", many of us who were youngsters then, dreamed that by 2015, cars would indeed fly. We may have grown up, but the kid that lives deep down inside us would still like to believe. Evidently, we're not alone, which brings us to Matthew Riese from San Francisco, who wanted to build the next best thing, a DeLorean-themed hovercraft. Read more » |
Scoop: New Porsche Macan Photographed While Being Unloaded Off a Truck Posted: 17 Jan 2013 04:55 PM PST If there's one model that has the potential to dethrone the Cayenne as Porsche's most commercially successful model, it is the upcoming Macan, which our spies spotted as it was being offloaded from a transport truck in Northern Sweden for artic trials wearing a discreet wrap to hide some details like the nose. Like its bigger brother, Porsche's 'baby' Cayenne resorts to the VW Group's widespread practice of platform and parts sharing, with the Macan related to the next Audi Q5. Read more » |
Watch a Helicopter Deliver an Aston Martin on Top of Dubai's Famous Burj Al Arab Hotel Posted: 17 Jan 2013 03:38 PM PST Transferring vehicles in the air by helicopter for promotional purposes is nothing new in the world of exotic luxury and sports car brands, as we've seen it being done many times in the past (see how Lamborghini, Ferrari and Bentley did it by clicking the respective links). Nevertheless, Aston Martin can lay claim to being the first to place a car onto the helipad of the world famous 'Burj Al Arab' hotel in Dubai, which sits 1,000ft above the ground at the top of the sail-shaped building, as part of its ongoing celebrations for its 100th birthday. Fiat-Chrysler CEO Marchionne Uses Racial Slur for New Alfa Romeo Engine Posted: 17 Jan 2013 03:06 PM PST Alfa Romeo's return to the U.S. market, which is supposed to revive the historic Italian brand that's currently on life support, has been announced more times than we can recall, only to be postponed time and time again. In our 2013 NAIAS review we wrote that, compared to GM and Ford, not to mention foreign carmakers, the Fiat-Chrysler Group presence was underwhelming and we were wondering where Alfa Romeo was. Apparently, others were thinking along the same line so they questioned the group's CEO about it. Sergio Marchionne replied that he won't be bringing the brand to the U.S. until the –long overdue- 159 mid-size sedan replacement, aka the Giulia, is perfect. Read more » |
EVO Reviews the Aston Martin Rapide, Compares it to the Maserati Gran Turismo Posted: 17 Jan 2013 02:36 PM PST If Aston Martin's Rapide strikes you as an elongated DB9 with two extra doors and seats, that is because, well, it is. Designed as a more practical alternative to the British luxury automaker's line-up, which otherwise consists only of two-door models, the truth is that the Rapide may be the one of the sexiest four-door models on sale, but it hasn't managed to achieve the kind of sales Aston was hoping for. Ford Atlas Named Autoweek's Most Significant Detroit Auto Show Debut, What Do You Say? Posted: 17 Jan 2013 02:13 PM PST The new Ford Atlas Concept, which previews the future of America's best-selling pickup truck for the past 36 years and the best-selling vehicle overall for 31 straight years, the F-150, has been named by the editors of Autoweek magazine, the "Most Significant vehicle of the 2013 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS)". Bob Gritzinger, Autoweek executive editor, explains why: "The Atlas Concept is clearly Most Significant winner for the things you don't see, like hidden aerodynamic improvements and weight savings from high-strength steel and interior parts, like thinner seats. Those things add up to significant fuel savings for pickup trucks down the road. A next-generation EcoBoost with Auto Start-Stop technology also signals why Atlas is a real game changer." New Audi RS7 Sportback Envisioned as a Ferocious Group B Rally Car Posted: 17 Jan 2013 01:13 PM PST The spanking new Audi RS7 Sportback is one of our favorite cars from the ongoing Detroit Auto Show. With a sleek-looking body and a masculine 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 pumping out more than 550-horses to all four wheels, what's not to like? Well, you could say its price tag, which will certainly be more than the $78,800 Audi commands for the 420hp S7 Sportback, but that's another story. Read more » |
Cadillac Says the ELR Hybrid Coupe will be Priced so as to Reflect its "Exclusivity" Posted: 17 Jan 2013 12:39 PM PST The 2014 Cadillac ELR that was revealed at this week's Detroit Motor Show is a stylish extended-range hybrid, 2+2 coupe based on the same Voltec platform as the Chevrolet Volt. Of course, while quite similar (but not identical) under the skin, the two GM hybrids belong to entirely different segments. The Volt is supposed to be a higher-priced alternative to mass-market rivals such as the plug-in Toyota Prius, while the ELR is a premium product. Read more » |
Spied: Volkswagen Puts 261mpge XL1 to the Test Under Freezing Tempatures Posted: 17 Jan 2013 12:14 PM PST You really have to appreciate what photographers go through sometimes to bring us spy pictures of future models. It's one thing standing on the side of the Nürburgring waiting for testers to run by, and another when you're doing so in an arctic climate at temperatures as low as -30 Celsius / -22 Fahrenheit, as was the case with this Volkswagen XL1 pre-production prototype. This is Not Something You Want to See in Front of You on a Highway…. Posted: 17 Jan 2013 11:31 AM PST We know what some of you may be thinking; "Ah, another crazy day in Russia". Well, if you are, you're wrong, because this dashcam footage was filmed on a highway in Las Vegas. And while it was an extremely close call, the kind where if one minor detail would have been different, the person driving the vehicle would have been either seriously hurt or even killed, the retired police officer and former race car driver and airline pilot (among other things), who we come to know under his YouTube alias Sidewinder, lived to tell the tale. Honda Surprises Canadians with World Premiere of New GEAR Concept at Montreal Auto Show Posted: 17 Jan 2013 11:01 AM PST Being that the Montreal International Auto Show takes place the same week as the Detroit Auto Show, we can't say that we were expecting any world premieres, but Honda surprised us today with the unveiling of a new concept car named GEAR at the Canadian event. The Japanese carmaker stated that the GEAR is a fresh study for a sub-compact (think Ford Fiesta) model aimed at young, urban, Gen-Y lifestyles. It added that the concept was inspired by fixed-gear bicycles (hence the name) and that it is "simple and utilitarian, but also customizable, connected and full of personality." Read more » |
Porsche’s 917/20 “Pink Pig” Le Mans Racer is a Tasty Piece of History Posted: 17 Jan 2013 10:35 AM PST Racing cars that don't win races are quickly forgotten even by their own creators. Winners make history, second is the first loser: that's the way it's always been. Surely, nobody remembers a Le Mans contender that didn't even make it to the finish line, right? That may be true for most cars but not for Porsche's 917. The brainchild of current VW Group supremo Ferdinand Piech, it is deeply etched in racing history not only for giving Porsche its first-ever victory at La Sarthe in 1970, followed by another one the next year but also because it starred in Steve McQueen's 1971 Le Mans film. RS-Racingteam Turns BMW M3 Into a Lightweight Track Racer Posted: 17 Jan 2013 09:53 AM PST If you visit one of BMW's public websites here in the US, in Europe and other countries around the world, the only M3s available for order are Coupe and Convertible models as the Germans have ended production of the four-door sedan iteration. However, as we learned today, there's still a way to get into a brand-new E90 M3 sedan via German aftermarket and motorsports outfit RS-Racingteam, which is offering new examples of the sports car. McLaren Updates MP4-12C GT3 Racer for 2013, WRC Champion Loeb to Compete in FIA GT Posted: 17 Jan 2013 08:59 AM PST Non-motorsport fans may overlook racing versions of sports cars but the fact is, they make for a very lucrative business for automakers that, naturally, are very happy to put some effort into them. Like Ferrari, Porsche and Mercedes-Benz, McLaren has developed a GT3-spec variant of its MP4-12C supercar that was supplied to 13 customer teams last year. In its inaugural season, the 12C GT3 took part in 98 separate events, mostly in Europe, and claimed 19 victories and a further 19 podium finishes. Read more » |
New Corvette Stingray Imagined Hunkered Down, Riding on Vossen Wheels Posted: 17 Jan 2013 08:20 AM PST Raise your hands if you think you know which car will be one of the stars of the next SEMA show in Las Vegas this fall. You can put them down now as we all know that unless GM chooses otherwise, the 2014 Corvette Stingray will be the poster child of world's largest aftermarket event. In fact, we're already starting to see speculative takes on tuned Stingrays such as the these two renderings made by Glacius Creations, which is run by Norwegian design Christer Stormark. Infiniti to Launch Four New Models, Revamp its U.S. Line-Up in the Next Four Years Posted: 17 Jan 2013 07:55 AM PST Leaving aside the Corvette Stingray, Infiniti's 2014 Q50 sports sedan was probably one of the more anticipated cars that debuted at the 2013 North American International Auto Show. According to Infiniti President Johan de Nysschen, the premium sedan is the "first salvo" in Nissan's luxury division expansion strategy that includes the launch of at least four more models and revising all of its North American nameplates over the next four years. Dumb and Bumper: See What Happens When Newbies Try to Pull out a Jeep from a Lake Posted: 17 Jan 2013 07:21 AM PST One of the first things they teach you about pulling / towing a vehicle is to stay as far away as possible from the chain or rope. Then they will tell you that there's a hook placed on both ends of a vehicle where you should connect the strap. Well, these experienced trail trackers from Brazil, did none of the above. What they did is tie a rope around the around the corner of one their Wrangler's rear bumper, with two men standing right next to the Jeep as it was trying to free the other vehicle. And surprise, surprise...the bumper broke off whacking one of the men in the head, fortunately, non-fatally, though, it could have easily gone the other way. Read more » |

Spy Shots: New BMW M3 Sedan Dashing through the Snow Posted: 17 Jan 2013 06:05 AM PST Driving in the snow to make your living sounds like a drag, unless you happen to be a test driver for a sports carmaker like BMW's M sub-brand, in which case, we would happily exchange places. This BMW employee was out testing the next generation of the M3 sedan, which from next year, will be the only M3 you will be able to buy (unless, the Germans have plans for a Touring variant) as the coupe and convertible will be renamed |
Scoop: Mercedes-Benz's Next S65 AMG Super Limo Chilling Out on the Road Posted: 17 Jan 2013 05:30 AM PST A very lightly camouflaged prototype of what we believe to be the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG performance limo was detailed on film while parked on the road by YouTube user DrGumoLunatic. But what leads us to think that this is the S65 and not the S63 AMG, or for that matter, a regular W222 S-Class model? Well, we could mention the wheels and brakes, but the most telling part are the quad exhaust pipes, as each pair is connected, a trait seen only in the S65 AMG models – in the S63, for example, there are four separately shaped outlets.
