Poll: Which is the Sexiest American Sports Car, the New Corvette Stingray or the SRT Viper?

Posted: 15 Jan 2013 08:15 PM PST

It's like the Super Bowl for Detroit-made sports cars: the brand-new Corvette Stingray, which just made its world premiere in Detroit this week, versus Chrysler's third-generation SRT Viper.

Granted, in their current forms, the two cars are separated by tens of thousands of dollars and nearly 200hp, with the base Vette's 450hp 6.2L V8 looking puny compared to the Viper's massive 8.4L V10 with 640-ponies. Conducting a fair twin-test won't be possible until Chevrolet rolls out the next Corvette Stingray ZR1.

NAIAS 2013: Bob Lutz'a New Destino Sport Sedan is the Corvette ZR1 of Fiskers [w/Video]

Posted: 15 Jan 2013 05:30 PM PST

Ask most people what they don't like most about the Fisker Karma, and there's a good chance they'll tell you something about its price tag, its moustache-style grille or the fact that it's powered by a range-extender hybrid drivetrain.

Leave it to Bob Lutz to come up with a crazy solution to address the last two. The former GM vice-chairman collaborated with industrialist Gilbert Villereal to form a new company named VL-Automotive, the first product of which is the Destino based on the Fisker Karma.

China's GAC Group Shows Off its Goods, Announces Chrysler Tie-Up at 2013 NAIAS

Posted: 15 Jan 2013 04:57 PM PST

Towards the end of the previous decade, we remember several Chinese automakers making their way to the Detroit Auto Shows vowing to begin selling cars in the United States. Unless we missed something, that never happened.

At this year's event, the only carmaker from China is the GAC Group (Guangzhou Automobile Group Co. Ltd), which brought along three vehicles, including the Trumpchi sedan that's loosely based on the Alfa Romeo 166, the Trumpchi GS5 SUV and the electric-powered E-jet concept saloon you see in the live shots from Detroit.

It may not be a standalone brand yet, as reports have suggested, but the 500 family is nevertheless expanding rapidly with five-door minivan and crossover offsoots.

That's not to say that Chrysler's Italian partner has left the standard, three-door 500 alone: after introducing the 160HP 500C Abarth and the all-electric 500e at LA last November, today it unveiled two design concepts at the 2013 North American International Auto Show.

NAIAS 2013: Mazda6 Skyactiv-D Grand-Am Diesel-Powered Racer

Posted: 15 Jan 2013 03:00 PM PST

When Audi wanted to showcase its TDI diesel technology, it chose to compete in the 2006 Le Mans 24-hour race with a diesel-powered prototype. It was a risky move, as the R10 TDI replaced the all-conquering gasoline-powered R8 that had five straight wins under its belt. The success of the R10, and later the R15, proved that Audi was right. GM Reportedly Making New Corvette Stingray Available Only to its Top Dealers

Posted: 15 Jan 2013 01:59 PM PST

The all-new, seventh-generation Corvette Stingray might be the most popular car of the 2013 Detroit Motor Show, but the truth is, its importance lies more in it being a halo car for the company than in the volume of the units it will sell.

Even so, all Chevrolet dealers would like to have at least one, as it would make for a hell of a showstopper. Well, that's part of the role of a halo car, isn't it?

Cadillac ELR Hybrid Coupe Packs 207HP, Goes on Sale in Early 2014 [Updated]

Posted: 15 Jan 2013 12:59 PM PST

When the Cadillac Converj concept was launched at the 2009 Detroit Motor Show, the consensus was unanimous: just build it! GM heard the press' and public's voices and, three years later, launched the production version, named ELR, at the same venue.

Having already seen the first official images, we know that the ELR is a bit different in its proportions compared to the concept; but then that's to be expected, as the designers have to work within certain parameters set by the engineers and, in any case, the 2+2 coupe is still quite a looker.

If its styling whet our appetites, the fact that it was based on the Chevrolet Volt platform dampened things a bit. Then doubt started to creep in: is the ELR just a Volt in a nice suit?

Cadillac says that this is definitely not the case. While the ELR does indeed utilize both the FWD platform and the Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV) hybrid powertrain that were introduced in the Volt, those elements have been tuned to suit the coupe's premium character.

Posted: 15 Jan 2013 11:57 AM PST

You can take our word for it that the car you see here is the new, 2014MY BMW Z4 that just made its world debut at the Detroit Motor Show. It's true that figuring out the differences to the outgoing model is not an easy task, as they are pretty much confined to the 3-D design of the headlights' LED light rings, the BMW lettering on the LED lines on top, the new surround for the side indicators and new-design 17- and 18-inch alloys. Acura Presents Redesigned NSX Concept II with Complete Interior at the Detroit Auto Show

Posted: 15 Jan 2013 05:47 PM PST

Exactly a year after Acura first displayed a conceptual study for a new NSX sports car at the North American International Auto Show in 2012, the Japanese company returned to Detroit today with a redesigned version of the study that includes a complete interior.

When we first saw a set of leaked, low-quality pictures of the NSX Concept II earlier in the morning, it wasn't clear if the car featured any changes to the exterior design.

As it turns out, it does, beginning with a new front fascia featuring a much less pronounced version of Acura's beak-like grille with a new carbon fiber structure that also appears on the side vents of the front and rear bumpers. Acura also inserted clear turning signals up front, and an LED strip in the center of both taillights.

At the back, we also find a new diffuser made from visible carbon fiber as well as a new see-through plastic surround for the license plate section.

As mentioned previously, this is the first time we see the interior of the concept, which sports a minimalistic design without a lot of knobs and controls, and is dressed in a combination of leather and Alcantara with carbon fiber trims used on the dashboard, the elevated center console and the door panels.

Ford's New Atlas Concept Envisions the Next Generation of the F-150 [Photos & Video]

Posted: 15 Jan 2013 05:51 PM PST

Ford yanked the covers off a new concept model at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show on Tuesday morning showcasing the brand's evolved styling language but more importantly, its future vision for pickup trucks and how they'll improve fuel economy.

The Blue Oval won't say (yet) if the new EcoBoost-powered Atlas Concept directly previews the next generation of its best-selling F-150 series, but the truck's size and overall presence suggests that it does.

"The Ford Atlas Concept previews the innovations that will transform what people expect from their pickup," said Raj Nair, Ford group vice president, Global Product Development. "With 36 years as America's best-selling pickup, we are absolutely committed to setting the agenda in the truck market."

While the exterior design of the Atlas Concept aptly evolves Ford's current DNA, the devil is in the details with the automaker making use of an assortment of active aerodynamic elements to reduce wind resistance.

Nissan Resonance Concept is a Futuristic Design Proposal Hinting at the Next Murano

Posted: 15 Jan 2013 02:49 PM PST

Created by Nissan Design America in San Diego, California under the direction of chief designer Shiro Nakamura, the Resonance concept that was unveiled today at the Detroit Motor Show hints at the design philosophy that will be adopted by the Japanese automaker in its future crossovers and especially the Murano.

The concept features a "floating" roof and what its designers call a "V-Motion", which starts from the grille, moves through the bonnet and "resonates" with the boomerang-shaped headlights that extend almost to the base of the steeply-raked A-pillars.
