Carscoop's A-Z Guide to the 2013 Detroit Motor Show [Updated]

Posted: 11 Jan 2013 05:28 PM PST

The North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) that takes place in Detroit is the first major event of the year for the automotive industry.

In 2013, the show opens its doors on January 14 for the media and on the 19th for the public, who can visit the Cobo Center until the 27th and view all the new models on display.

Perhaps the most eagerly anticipated premiere is that of the all-new, seventh-generation Corvette. GM, however, has a second ace up its sleeve for the 2013 NAIAS: the world debut of the Cadillac ELR hybrid coupe, aka the production version of the Converj concept that was launched at the same event four years ago.

Ferrari Driver Having a Hard Time to Park

Posted: 11 Jan 2013 04:55 PM PST

We'll admit that, low-slung supercars with slots instead of normal rear windows and gearboxes that sometimes have a mind of their own aren't the easiest vehicles to parallel park.

Nevertheless, we think that this Ferrari driver had more than enough space to complete the parking maneuver if not with a single move, a couple at the most.

Congress Urged to Impose New Mileage-Based Tax to Pay for Road Repairs

Posted: 11 Jan 2013 04:33 PM PST

Here's a conundrum: the government is hell-bent on reducing the average fuel consumption, and thus CO2 emissions, of new vehicles. It's even offering federal tax incentives to buyers who choose to go "green", i.e. hybrids or all-electrics.

It follows that, lowering fuel consumption, means lower income from federal gas taxes that have remained the same since 1993. Without new sources of revenue, the Congressional Budget Office estimated last August that the Highway Trust Fund will need at least US$110 million in funding for road repairs.

Ah, but government officials are already taking care of that.

New Corvette C7 Poses on Magazine Front Covers [Updated]

Posted: 11 Jan 2013 04:06 PM PST

For their own reasons, automakers have their preferences in the media and like to give select magazines and websites (keep an eye on a certain auto blog's 12:01am, 12:02am Ford postings, for example) press photos and releases well before they distribute them to the rest of the media world.

General Motors is one of many automakers that adheres to these unwritten rules, which is why you're seeing a snapshot of the yet-to-be revealed 2014 Chevrolet Corvette C7 posing on the cover of Automobile Magazine's next issue.

Earlier this week, Mercedes-Benz completed the update of the E-Class sedan and Estate/Wagon range with the presentation of the almighty AMG variants.

The new snout and re-worked body of the E63 AMG Sedan and Wagon tell only half the story as Mercedes also boosted the standard twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V8 to 550HP (557PS) and 531 lb-ft (720 Nm), and enhanced the lineup with all-wheel drive 4MATIC versions and an even more powerful S model rated at 577HP and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm).

Toyota Prius and Lexus HS 250h Class-Action Lawsuit Dismissed by California Court

Posted: 11 Jan 2013 02:32 PM PST

If there's one thing Toyota has in abundance in the U.S., apart from sales and models, it is lawsuits. This time, though, the Japanese automaker scored a victory as U.S. District Judge Cormac Carney in California denied a class-action lawsuit by owners of Prius and Lexus models.

More specifically, the judge denied four car owners' request to represent other owners of 2010 Prius and Lexus HS 250h models in California over a 2010 recall for a software upgrade that fixed an issue with the cars' ABS system.

Watch Arnold Schwarzenegger Steamroll a Mercedes-Benz with his Personal Tank

Posted: 11 Jan 2013 01:04 PM PST

Yes, we're talking about that Arnold Schwarzenegger, and if you're not entirely convinced by the first video that it is really him driving the tank that steamrolled an old Mercedes-Benz W123 station wagon model, then a quick visit to the Slashfilm cinema site will lay your doubts to rest.

Arnie, as many like to call him, invited a group of journalists to the Melody Ranch Studios in Newhall, California, where dozens of famous western TV shows have been filmed in the past, including Gunsmoke and The Lone Ranger.

Posted: 11 Jan 2013 12:26 PM PST

In spite of losing ground in Europe, where (excluding Germany) it delivered 844,500 vehicles, 6.9 percent less than in 2011, last year was a great one for the Volkswagen brand as its global sales reached 5.74 million units, an increase of 12.7 percent compared to the previous count.

Sales were slightly down in its home market, too, dropping by 1.2 percent to 586,100 vehicles. In Central and Eastern Europe, though, which are not hit by the debt crisis, its sales increased by 22.4 percent.

Posted: 11 Jan 2013 11:26 AM PST

The Toyota 86, aka Scion FR-S in the U.S. and GT 86 outside Japan, is a hot item, especially in its home country. Gazoo Racing has very close ties with Toyota, so launching several concepts in cooperation with other tuners at the Tokyo Auto Salon was pretty much to be expected.

We'll begin with the 86 Modellista, which is all about the looks. Gazoo Racing says that the theme was developing a "futuristic sophisticated" concept.

Posted: 11 Jan 2013 09:56 AM PST

Sometimes you just have to see to believe how lucky people are. If it wasn't for a nearby security camera recording the road, we sincerely doubt that anyone would buy the story that these three pedestrians from Belarus had to share after an unfortunate encounter with a van.

The footage shows the driver of a Citroen Berlingo taking a left turn on a green light when a black sedan suddenly appeared in the picture travelling at high speed.

Posted: 11 Jan 2013 07:37 AM PST

Let's face it; the Prius C's looks are about as interesting as a corn on the cob. Nevertheless, Toyota believes it can add some character to its sub-compact hybrid with a new concept that was introduced today at the Tokyo Auto Salon.

The G Sports version of the Aqua, which is what Toyota calls the Prius C in its home market of Japan, retains the standard model's full hybrid powertrain adding numerous  styling bits and a re-tuned suspension into the mix.

Posted: 11 Jan 2013 07:04 AM PST

Ah, the creative minds from Japan's Nihon Automobile College (NATS) are back again to surprise us in more ways than one with their work at this week's 2013 Tokyo Auto Salon.

The creators of unusual concepts such as the kei-car version of the Honda NSX back in 2007, took the most popular car of this year's show, the Toyota 86, and turned it into something that resembles an Audi R8, which they then called the R86.

Mugen Details New Honda CR-V Design Study, Could Enter Production

Posted: 11 Jan 2013 06:37 AM PST

Typically, with the presentation of a mainstream Honda model, the brand's tuning partner Mugen instantly comes out with its own package of goods, but in the case of the fourth-generation CR-V that was introduced in late 2011, that never happened.

This might change if Mugen decides to create a production version of its prototype CR-V Design Study that was unwrapped at this week's Tokyo Auto Salon.

Subaru WRX Driver Saves the Day in Japan After Hitting Black Ice

Posted: 11 Jan 2013 06:08 AM PST

Black patches of ice on the road are a driver's worst enemy as there's really nothing you can do once it creeps under your tires. Not even ABS or an advanced four-wheel drive system can save you, though; these features will indeed help you lessen the risks of getting into deeper trouble than what you are already in.

A Japanese driver of what looks like a Subaru WRX/STi was confronted with a situation like this right after coming out of a curve on a mountain road, and to make matters worse, a small truck had just crashed into the side rails and was blocking the road in front.

As the name implies, the Mark X G Sports Carbon Roof Concept trades the regular model's steel roof for lightweight carbon fibre top, which Toyota says reduces body weight and increases driving performance.

Renault Lifts the Curtain on New Captur Small Crossover, the French Juke

Posted: 11 Jan 2013 05:28 AM PST

After the release of a teaser image and a video earlier this week, Renault pulled the wraps off the all-new Captur, a sub-compact crossover that will make its world debut at the Geneva Salon in March before arriving in showrooms across Europe in late spring.

The new Captur is the French version of the Nissan Juke, with which it shares its platform architecture that also underpins the Renault Clio Mk4. At 4,120mm (162.2-inches) long, the Captur is only 5mm (about 0.2-inches) shorter than the Juke.

According to Renault, the Captur combines the "expressive styling and driving position of an SUV, the cabin space and modular interior of an MPV, and the agility and driving enjoyment of a compact hatchback".

While it may borrow the name of the athletic three-door Captur Concept from 2011, when it came to the design, Renault chose to look more towards the latest Clio than the study itself.
