Tour the 2013 Detroit Auto Show through a Super Gallery of 400+ Photos

Posted: 16 Jan 2013 07:47 PM PST

The 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit won't open for the public until Saturday, January 19, (January 16-17 is the industry preview, and January 18, the charity preview) but if you've been following our coverage of event, you should know most things you need to know.

While no one was surprised by Detroit's big three choosing their hometown to launch their new production and concept cars, this year's show also had major world premieres from Asian and European automakers, too.

Wrapping up our NAIAS report, we thought we'd make a quick review of this year's most notable offerings.

Hagwalah: That Was, Way, Way Too Close for Comfort…

Posted: 16 Jan 2013 05:50 PM PST

The only thing that's more senseless than hanging out of a car that is practicing the outlawed Saudi Arabian style of drifting known locally as 'hagwalah' is to stand on the side, or even worse, in the middle of the road, to watch the spectacle.

And let's say you do, if a car is drifting slide-ways towards you at high speed, shouldn't you at least start running away as fast as you can?

This is What the 2014 Corvette Stingray Convertible Could Look Like

Posted: 16 Jan 2013 05:09 PM PST

It's only been days since GM pulled the covers off from the coupe iteration of the new 2014 Corvette Stingray in Detroit, and even though a convertible body style isn't due for another year or so, images of a drop top version surfaced on the internet today.

The pictures were first seen on "The Auto Insider", a site that may or may not be affiliated with a former Jalopnik editor under the same alias, with the author stating, "I might add, this is no render. No pixels were pushed."

Scoop: Is Mercedes-Benz Prepping a GLA 45 AMG High Performance Crossover?

Posted: 16 Jan 2013 04:10 PM PST

If there's one thing that Germany's premium carmakers know how to do well, it is to expand their offerings to cover every possible niche there is. That said, we wouldn't be surprised to learn that this prototype caught testing in Northern Sweden is indeed an AMG performance variant of the upcoming GLA, as claimed by our man with the long lens.

The most persuasive evidence that points to this are the big brakes with drilled rotors positioned behind large alloy wheels and the twin exhaust pipes at the back.

Peugeot Workers Protest Layoffs, Company Says Strikes Happen Every Month

Posted: 16 Jan 2013 02:55 PM PST

Last summer, PSA Peugeot Citroen announced that it would close its Aulnay plant near Paris and slash 8,000 jobs in a cost-cutting effort to minimize its losses, which were €819 million (US$990 million) in the first month of 2012 alone.

Today, 300 of its workers belonging to the CGT, one of France's more radical unions, went on strike at said plant. They may account for just 10 percent of the factory's 3,000-strong workforce, but they were able to "paralyze" the facility as most of them worked on production.

Spy Shots: Peugeot Nabbed Testing the New 308 Hatch Out in the Cold

Posted: 16 Jan 2013 02:19 PM PST

If Peugeot is to muddle through the European debt crisis, it needs to strengthen its presence and gain market share in key categories such the popular B- and C-segments.

The French carmaker has already launched its main supermini competitor in the form of the brand-new 208 hatchback and will soon throw the new 2008 small crossover into the market, so it's now focusing on the development of the compact 308's replacement that will challenge the likes of the VW Golf Mk7 and Ford Focus.

2014 Corvette Stingray Video Roundup: Engine Startup, Press Kit Unboxing and Digital Gauge

Posted: 16 Jan 2013 01:43 PM PST

The flow of information regarding the new 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray continues with a trio of videos that show some new aspects of the car itself as well as General Motors' promotional efforts targeting the press.

We'll begin our sightseeing with a clip that comes to us courtesy of the crew over at GMAuthority who placed a microphone up, close and personal to the display model's buttocks at the Detroit motor show as GM fired up the 450-horsepower V8 engine.

Sadly, that's all we get as the person sitting inside had no soul in his right foot and turned the engine off faster than the Corvette can go from zero to 60mph. Bummer…

Lexus LF-CC Concept Reportedly Coming in Coupe and Roadster Flavors in 2015

Posted: 16 Jan 2013 12:53 PM PST

The moment the last LFA rolled off the production line of Toyota's Motomachi plant last month, Lexus was left without a sports car in its line-up.

It may have lost money on every one it made, despite its US$375,000 price tag that made it the most expensive Japanese production car in history, but the 562HP V10 exotic did for Lexus' image more than probably any other car since the original LS that launched the brand in 1989.

Posted: 16 Jan 2013 12:17 PM PST

Just trust us when we say that you never, ever want to stand behind (or anywhere close, for that matter…) of the woman driving the car featured in this incident, which reportedly took place in mother Russia.

The woman in the Mazda6 (?) sedan appeared to be in a pickle while trying to maneuver her car out of a parking lot, at which point, another woman came out of the blue (or in this case, white) to give a helping hand.

After advertising its new C-MAX Hybrid and Fusion Hybrid 47 mpg mileage, Ford faced a lot of negative publicity, along with a federal class-action lawsuit, when Consumer Reports published its own test findings that were 17 and 21 percent lower than the EPA-certified mileage.

During the Deutche Bank Global Industry Conference in Detroit on Tuesday, January 15, Ford's product development chief Raj Nair disclosed that the EPA may change its testing procedures concerning the consumption of hybrid models.

Since we are approaching the launch date of the new Toyota Proace in Europe, the Japanese carmaker decided to release a fresh set of images of its commercial and passenger van series that replaces the Hiace.

If the van's appearance looks eerily familiar, it is because Toyota entered an OEM agreement with PSA Peugeot Citroën to rebadge its Citroen Jumpy and Peugeot Expert models. There's also a fourth variant of the series produced by Fiat and named the Scudo.

Would You Pay $42,900 for a Brand New 1992 BMW 325i Cabrio with Only 237 Miles?

Posted: 16 Jan 2013 09:06 AM PST

As an avid fan of BMW's E30 3-Series, you can understand my enthusiasm after discovering a virtually brand-new 1992 325i with a mere 237 miles or 381 kilometers on the odometer, while surfing on eBay last night following an exhaustive coverage of the Detroit Auto Show – what can I say, I love cars…

Sure, it was the less desirable convertible (albeit fitted with a automatic manual transmission), but how often do you find an E30 these days with virtually no road time?

But as with many other things in this life, the first two seconds of enthusiasm were followed by disappointment upon looking at the Arizona seller's asking price of…$42,900 (€32,200 at the current exchange rates).

I don't know why and how the car ended up being garaged for more than two decades, but the seller says that during this time, it was "covered throughout its life".

Naturally, we all know that when a vehicle remains unused for such a long period, many things can and will start to break or go bad. The current owner of the 325i Cabriolet says the car recently underwent service to fix these issues, and which are listed in detail below. Whether everything was addressed, is another story, for the car's future buyer to find out.

Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren All Foiled Up

Posted: 16 Jan 2013 07:31 AM PST

After it stunned the world with the F1 and before it created its own automotive division that gave birth to the MP4-12C and in due time, the range-topping P1, McLaren agreed to design and manufacture the SLR Coupe and Roadster supercars in conjunction with Mercedes-Benz.

Today, even though an untrained eye may easily mistake the SLR McLaren for some kind of tweaked and tuned SL hardtop roadster, Mercedes' supercar remains a very expensive and sought after model by collectors and fans of the brand alike.

Google Shot the Street View, But Did it Kill this Donkey in Botswana?

Posted: 16 Jan 2013 06:46 AM PST

Technology can work miracles, and earn billions, for you, as Google has found out. The Mountain View-based multinational corporation found out that even your own tech can turn against you and land you in hot waters.

No, the Googleplex hasn't suddenly become self-aware and decided to turn against its creators; it's something a bit more bizarre involving Google Maps, Botswana and a donkey lying in the middle of the street.

Allow us explain: on Tuesday, Twitter used @TheRealSheldonC (apparently a Big Bang Theory fan) tweeted an image of a donkey lying on a road in Botswana and looking pretty much dead or injured.
