Future Cars: Conceptualizing the 2014 Range Rover Sport Posted: 02 Jan 2013 06:03 PM PST Drug dealers and gangsters unite (and of course the rest of us who like a sporty Rangie); the British off-road specialists are re-imagining their entrant to the hyper SUV market - that being the all-new Range Rover Sport. The current generation of the Sport has been with us since 2005 as a sportier alternative to the larger Range Rover. It's been a hit with the trendy suburbanites and downtown corporate suites here and in Europe - although in the latter land they're mainly used for transporting hit-men and smugglers. This is a lucrative market and Land Rover knows it, hence why the brand is expanding its lineup of luxury off-roaders. Read more » |
Strangelove: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Loved the Corvette Posted: 02 Jan 2013 05:17 PM PST It wasn't red but a very loud yellow and it certainly didn't look "little" as it stood in the car parking lot next to a Porsche Cayman S or the BMW 335i I had just stepped out from: so much for Prince's song, then… It wasn't a Z06 or (heaven forbid) a ZR1; just a plain-Jane, 430HP Corvette C6 coupe. Despite never having driven America's supercar before, I grabbed the Cayman's keys before you could say "Vette". I had a three-hour trip ahead of me, half of it on twisty mountain roads, and I figured I would be much better off with Zuffenhausen's best-handling car than something with leaf springs in its suspension. Porsche Offers You a Ride Around its Leipzig Test Track for as Low as €98 / $130 Posted: 02 Jan 2013 04:30 PM PST Putting together a track combining of some of the world's most famous corners is pure sports car enthusiast nirvana. That's exactly what Porsche has done in the track adjacent to its Leipzig plant where the Cayenne SUV and Panamera sports saloon are built. Surely no one can argue with the Suzuka "S", Monza's Parabolica, the Monaco Bus Stop or what is probably the most difficult to get it right: Laguna Seca's Corkscrew. Read more » |
IIHS Names Safest Cars in America for 2013, Plus Top 13 Posted: 02 Jan 2013 03:58 PM PST In its latest release, the U.S. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has come out with a list that includes the safest cars in each category for 2013, while also awarding a new "Top Safety Pick+" accolade to 13 cars, most of which are mainstream mid-size saloons. Lamborghini Gears Up For 50th Ann., Shares Carbon Tech with Boeing Dreamliner [w/Videos] Posted: 02 Jan 2013 03:12 PM PST In 1963, Ferruccio Lamborghini presented the first car that bore his name: the 350 GTV. A few years later, he would turn the sports car industry on its head with the mid-engined Miura, which would set the template for the Countach, Diablo and Murcielago that followed and established Lamborghini as a supercar manufacturer. Despite its impact in the automotive world, and specifically in the supercar segment, the Sant' Agata Bolognese plant was a low-volume operation: from its inception until 2002, annual sales averaged a mere 250 units. By 2007, however, this number has increased nine-fold, thanks in part to the addition of the smaller Gallardo to the range, while today the Aventador is the fastest-selling V12 Lambo ever and has an 18-month waiting list. A 79-Year-Old Florida Woman Reportedly Crashed Into this Lamborghini Aventador Posted: 02 Jan 2013 02:43 PM PST What you're looking at here, is allegedly the result of a 79-year old female driver of an unidentified car crashing into a fairly new Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 in Sarasota, Florida, or at least that's what the accident-hunters over from WreckedExotics are reporting. We tried to look for a second source to corroborate the original story, but up until now, we have come empty handed, so you might want to take it with a grain of salt. Read more » |
Paparazzi Killed in LA While Trying to Get Shots of Justin Bieber’s Ferrari Posted: 02 Jan 2013 02:01 PM PST Celebrity hunting is what paparazzi do for a living. Sadly, it can also result in them perishing according to a report from TMZ, which was later confirmed by CBS Los Angeles. The report said that a photographer was killed in Los Angeles while he was trying to snap pictures of Justin Bieber's white Ferrari 458 Italia. Read more » |
Auto Express Pits BMW M135i Against Subaru WRX STi 320R Posted: 02 Jan 2013 01:11 PM PST Once upon a time, not too long ago, buyers rarely cross shopped between Subarus and BMWs, but now, with the way that the Bavarian brand has expanded its range into most segments of the market, many of its cars directly challenge the Japanese brand's models in terms of specs and surprisingly, pricing as well. A prime example is the newly launched in Europe BMW M135i hatchback, which with 316bhp (320PS) and 450Nm (332 lb-ft) from its turbocharged 3.0-liter straight, the option of either RWD or AWD configurations, and a UK starting price of £30,555 for the six-speed manual 3d and £31,970 for the 8-speed auto 3d model, matches the Subaru WRX STi. Polk Forecasts U.S. New Vehicle Market to Reach 15.3 Million Sales in 2013 Posted: 02 Jan 2013 12:30 PM PST The U.S. auto market has rebounded from the low figures of the 2009 pre-bailout crisis in spectacular fashion. It's a trend that is not going to fade away any time soon: after Edmunds.com, automotive analyst firm Polk also predicts that new car sales will continue to rise in the States. For 2013, Polk forecasts new vehicle registrations in the U.S. to increase by 6.6 percent over 2012 to 15.3 million units, helped by the improving state of the economy and the manufacturers' increasing capacity in their local plants. Key to this increase will be the drastic increase of new and redesigned vehicles. For the year that has just begun, automakers plan 43 new vehicle launches, which represents an impressive 50 percent increase compared to 2012, and no less than 60 redesigns. Read more » |
BMWs and Two-Wheelers Don't Mix in Taiwan Posted: 02 Jan 2013 11:49 AM PST Here's another episode between a BMW driver and a biker in Taiwan. Whereas last time, we saw a bicyclist crossing paths with a BMW (and paying the price for it…), now it's a scooter rider. The person steering what looks to be a BMW M5 E61 sedan charges off as soon as the light turns green but is soon annoyed by the presence of a motorcyclist. Read more » |

Ferrari California Replacement to get Turbocharged V6 and/or V8 Engines? Posted: 02 Jan 2013 10:30 AM PST In November 2011, we scooped a Ferrari California prototype with larger wheels and two triangular air intakes on its hood doing the rounds at the company's test track in Italy. At the time, we figured it could be a hotter version that would be introduced with the model's 2012 update. While the California was indeed updated in key areas, there was no hotter variant in sight at its Geneva Motor Show debut. Then, last summer, another "baby Ferrari" mule was caught, this time on film. The inlets were absent but the hood was visibly positioned higher and, more importantly, the distinctive hissing of turbochargers betrayed that there was something unusual hiding underneath. Lamborghini Gallardo LP560 Proves its Worth on the Snow Posted: 02 Jan 2013 10:01 AM PST Who said Lamborghinis can't be driven on the snow? Well, perhaps owners of cars made in the pre-VW Group era (sans the LM002 SUV) or rear-wheel editions, but the Gallardo LP560 with its fairly advanced all-wheel drive system and equally importantly, the correct set of tires, can be a delight on nature's frosting. Maserati Launches New Global Pre-Owned Car Locator Website Posted: 02 Jan 2013 08:25 AM PST Just like most other carmakers, Maserati now has its own dedicated website for finding pre-owned vehicles including certified models, though, unless we were…blinded from the Italian brand's premium sports cars, we couldn't find a link on the site explaining what "certified pre-owned" really means to buyers and how it compares to non-certified vehicles. One major difference over many other websites or pages of the sort is that the so-called Maserati Stock Locator provides access to dealers all across the world. Read more » |
