New Lexus IS 250 Falls Short in Edmunds's Comparo with BMW 328i and Cadillac ATS 2.0

Posted: 14 May 2013 07:22 PM PDT

The newest entry in the extremely competitive premium compact saloon category is the third generation of Lexus' IS sedan that brings with it a sharper design with more character inside and out, along with the promise of improved dynamics.

It doesn't have an easy job as all contestants for the title in the segment have many strong points, with the BMW 3-Series, now in its sixth iteration, having the added bonus of being the most recognized and successful player for almost three decades now.

Porsche Says 918 Spyder will be Faster than Ferrari LaFerrari and McLaren P1

Posted: 14 May 2013 06:13 PM PDT

Despite having less power and being heavier that its archrivals the Ferrari LaFerrari and McLaren P1, Porsche believes the upcoming 918 Spyder will be the faster than both. At least that's what Porsche's product manager James Eastwood said in an interview with CAR magazine.

The question on everyone's lips is whether Porsche will upgrade the 918's engine and electric motors producing a combined 795-horses to match its rivals' outputs of more than 900bhp. The answer is a surprising no.

450HP Tuned Subaru BRZ Might be the One You’ve Been Waiting For

Posted: 14 May 2013 05:42 PM PDT

The Subaru BRZ is one of the hottest sports cars on the market right now, blending an excellent chassis with a fairly stylish body style and affordable pricing. It has really stolen the sports car show ever since it was launched, along with its two other Toyota- and Scion-badged sister models. The only complaint people are having with the coupe up until this point is that its straight line performance is poorer than that of a well-sorted hot hatch. Read more »

New BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso V12 Coupé Brings Back Memories of the 8-Series

Posted: 14 May 2013 04:54 PM PDT

The last time BMW had a V12-powered coupe in its range was at the end of the previous decade with the range topping versions of the 8-Series (the 850Ci and 850CSi specifically). The reason why we mention this has to do with the Bavarian carmaker's announcement on the world premiere of the one-off Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupé at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este 2013 on May 24.

Designed and created in collaboration with famed Italian design house Pininfarina, the Gran Lusso Coupé follows in the footsteps of the BMW Z4-based Zagato Coupé that was presented at last year's Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este.

eBay Find: 1980 Mazda RX-7 GS

Posted: 14 May 2013 02:59 PM PDT

If you want to save yourself a lot of hassle in choosing an old sports car to drive around, there's nothing wrong with going Japanese. Like this fairly clean first-gen 1980 Mazda RX-7 GS we found on eBay, which is said to be both mechanically sound and good to look at, according to its owner who bought it from "a friend of the original owner."

Nevertheless, as with any used car and especially one fitted with a rotary engine, it would be wise to have a mechanic check it out and eliminate any nasty and costly surprises.

OK-Chiptuning Manta-Porsche has Funny Name and Looks, but Packs Some Serious Punch

Posted: 14 May 2013 01:00 PM PDT

We won't blame you for lifting an eyebrow or two at the name of this car – "Ok-Chiptuning Manta-Porsche" as well as its colorful looks, both of which were inspired by the 1991 German action comedy "Manta, Manta".

While the protagonist of the film drove an Opel Manta coupe, Ok-Chiptuning chose a 996-generation Porsche 911 Turbo from 2002 for its tuning project. The exterior of the sports coupe was foil-wrapped in the same colors as the movie model, with the tuner adding a set of Opel logos on the new 19-inch, pink colored rims from TechArt shod in tires size 235/35-19 at the front and 305/30-19 on the rear axle.

Refreshed 2014 BMW M5 Appears on Company's Website by Mistake

Posted: 14 May 2013 12:40 PM PDT

We weren't supposed to see the updated BMW M5 just yet, but it seems that the people behind the brand's German online configurator either wanted us to see the car early or they made a mistake…Either way, these are the first official shots of the facelifted, performance edition of the 5-Series.

As usual with these BMW LCIs (lifecycle impulse), the changes are subtle and hard to spot if you don't really know the old car well. Still, we spot a redesigned grille, very subtle work on the headlights and rear lights, as well as revised mirror caps.

Posted: 14 May 2013 12:21 PM PDT

Here at Carscoops we love a good old quarter-mile drag race, and we're definitely not alone. So, when the crew from Autocar set up a rather unusual drag race, we were interested to see take a look.

The lineup is made up of three very different machines: there's a hardcore track monster – the 475bhp rear-wheel drive Ariel Atom V8, a 560bhp rallycross four-wheel drive Citroen DS3, and a 193bhp BMW HP4 superbike. Which of these three do you think is fastest over a standing quarter-mile sprint?

Brazilian Cops Use Car to Ram Drug-Lord's Airplane and Prevent Takeoff!

Posted: 14 May 2013 11:26 AM PDT

You know all those cliché movie scenes where the car is chasing the plane ready to take off, and either the driver or the passenger climbs out one of the windows and onto the landing gear of the plane just before it leaves the ground? This is nothing like that.

In Brazil, they are dead serious about this stuff, and if you try to smuggle drugs out of the country via plane, and the authorities hear of this and come after you, be warned, they will use their cars to prevent you from taking off in your Cessna, all of this set to the background of plentiful gunfire. Just check out the video posted below, and see just how serious they are and how dangerous their job is.

Renault Unsure About Making an RS-Badged Electric Car

Posted: 14 May 2013 11:05 AM PDT

We've seen what a powerful electric vehicle can do, both on the road and on the track. A battery-powered model carries more weight than a conventional petrol- or diesel-powered alternative, but it has a simplified drivetrain and instant torque, so it does have its advantages.

While Renault Sport is interested in adding an EV to their sporty lineup, it doesn't seem ready yet, according to a report from CarAdvice, which spoke to the brand's motorsport technical manager, Francois Champod.

BMW Driving Instructor Smashes World Record for Longest Drift by…47.71 Miles!

Posted: 14 May 2013 10:26 AM PDT

You could say that Johan Schwartz is a very happy man these days. Why? Well, because the BMW Performance Center Instructor shattered the Guinness World Record for the longest sustained drift at the BMW Performance Center near Greenville in South Carolina this past Saturday, May 11, 2013.

Actually, disintegrated is a better word for what Schwartz achieved as he topped the previous record set in February in Abu Dhabi at 3.568 miles or 5.74 kilometers, by a whopping 47.71 miles (76.8 km) in an unmodified M5!

GM Re-Badges Nissan NV200 as the 2015 Chevrolet City Express

Posted: 14 May 2013 09:02 AM PDT

Well, this was something we weren't expecting; in a not so flattering move for a company of the size and the likes of General Motors, the Detroit automaker has decided to enter the small commercial van segment in its home market, not with one of its own creations but by placing the bow-tie badge on the new Nissan NV200 and naming it the 2015 Chevrolet City Express.

"Our fleet customers have asked us for an entry in the commercial small van segment, so this addition to the Chevrolet portfolio will strengthen our position with fleets and our commercial customers," stated Ed Peper, U.S. vice president of GM Fleet and Commercial Sales.

Lamborghini Aventadors are finding work around the world, providing various services, from highway patrol safety in the Middle East, to assuring the security of Bologna airport, in Italy. Piecha Design's Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 GT-R Tune is All About Looks

Posted: 14 May 2013 07:47 AM PDT

It was to be expected that the tuning industry would jump on the Mercedes-Benz CLA shortly after its market launch and prepare a multitude of accessories and performance parts for the compact model, and already, we have at least two companies that have announced an initial tuning program.

Following Brabus, Germany's Piecha Design also released images and details on a new package for the CLA 250 called the GT-R, though, don't let the name fool you as this is mostly a styling kit with no performance upgrades under the hood – for the time being.

"A car crash is very scary, Yulia," says the father, according to the translation offered in the video (if it's wrong, tell us about it in the comments). "You understand why I am telling you all this, yes?" he asks his daughter who replies "Yes".

Renault and Nissan Won’t Even Go Near their 1.5-Million EV Sales Target by 2016

Posted: 14 May 2013 06:31 AM PDT

Renault and Nissan are serious about electric vehicles. Nissan's Leaf is an appreciated car, and it is selling, just not as well as originally anticipated. However, it will soon be joined by the electric version of the NV200 commercial vehicle, so that may boost sales considerably for them. Renault isn't doing too well in the sector, though, having shifted 24,688 units through last month.

The French automaker, which currently makes the Twizy, Fluence and Kangoo EV, as well as the all-new Zoe, will miss its sales targets for the year, as well as the final goal set by group CEO Carlos Ghosn, 1.5-million combined Renault-Nissan EV sales by the end of the 2016 fiscal year (March 1, 2017).

Hennessey-Tuned Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT Gets to 60MPH in 3.9 Seconds

Posted: 14 May 2013 04:38 AM PDT

A heavy SUV, which has been lowered, stiffened and bestowed with a monster V8 engine is a somewhat pointless exercise, and does not make a great off-roader or sports car. However, enough power will negate any kind of weight in a straight line, and that's where the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT fitted with the Hennessey HPE650 upgrade kit shines. Read more »
