Roberto Cavalli-Styled Mini Paceman Sells for Close to $200,000 at Life Ball Gala!

Posted: 28 May 2013 04:17 PM PDT

The gold-themed Life Ball Mini 2013 designed by Roberto Cavalli was sold for a record €150,000 ($194,000) during the AIDS Solidarity gala in Vienna, Austria, with all proceeds going to projects helping to combat HIV/AIDS. This makes the Mini Paceman the most expensive Mini ever sold at a Life Ball event.

While we don't know who is the buyer of the Cavalli-customized Paceman, we assume he loved the large number of gilded elements inside and out, the iridescent paintwork that shimmers from black to brown depending on the angle of light, not to mention Cavalli's animal prints.

Henrik Fisker Teams Up with Hong Kong Billionaire as a Last Effort to Save Company

Posted: 28 May 2013 03:33 PM PDT

While currently under the threat of bankruptcy, Fisker Automotive is not dead - yet. Who would you think is the person who wants to save the company the most? Why, of course, it's the automaker's founder, Henrik Fisker, who resigned from his position at the helm of Fisker after not being able to resolve his differences with the members of the board, regarding strategy and future ambitions – or at least that's what we're told.

This renewed interest from Mr. Fisker is welcome, because sensing the start of decay from within, vultures began circling the company months ago, ever since it became known that not a single car had been built since July of 2012.

Carscoops' 2015 Mazda3 Rendering Fools Motor Trend, Autoweek and Automobile Magazine

Posted: 28 May 2013 03:09 PM PDT

Earlier today, Josh Byrnes sent me an interesting email pointing me towards to a story from Car Advice titled "Mazda 3 rendering sparks debate", in which there was a picture of the next generation Mazda3. The image, credited to Mazda North America, was from Bank of America Merrill Lynch's annual "Car Wars" analysis, which according to a CNN Money report, is "Published each May for some two decades" and "provides a glimpse into the future of the U.S. auto business."

Carscoops regulars will no doubt recognize the picture as a rendering from our own Josh Byrnes – sans our watermarks that were crudely removed. Besides Car Advice, the story was also posted on several other news and magazine websites, including Motor Trend, Autoweek, Automobile magazine.

After a Motor Trend reader left a couple of comments on the page informing them of the true source of the rendering, including this one, "JEEEEEEZ automobilemag staff - get your sources straight. This is the same 'rendered' image 1st posted on the carscoops site back in March http://www.carscoops.com/2013/03/future-cars-2014-mazda3-hatchback-goes.html", the publication posted the following update:

Scoop: Is VW Working on a Facelift for the Polo or is it Testing Something Else?

Posted: 28 May 2013 02:06 PM PDT

It's no secret that German carmakers usually update their cars around the four year-mark after launch, so when our spies nabbed a Volkswagen Polo Mk5 (released in 2009) fitted with testing equipment in Europe, a facelift was the first thing that crossed their minds.

The prototype featured no camouflage whatsoever with the only cosmetic change said to be the styling of the front apron. So, what does that mean?

Warning: The following video contains scenes with men in their...birthday suits.

What can one say about Kimi Raikkonen? He's a brilliant driver, a no-nonsense kind of person and a good friend. The blokes from Dudesons, which are a Finnish team competing in the Gumball 3000 rally, can testify about the last part, as Kimi welcomed them on his yacht in Monaco before the 2011 event and gave them some precious advice about how to win the rally.

Despite Poor Sales, Angela Merkel Still Wants 1 Million EVs on German Roads by 2020

Posted: 28 May 2013 01:06 PM PDT

Germany's chancellor Angela Merkel said in 2010 that she wanted to see 1 million electric cars on German roads by 2020. However, the market did not seem to take her words seriously. On January 1 2013, only 7,114 of Germany's 43.4 million passenger vehicles were EVs. Even if hybrids are added to electric car sales, the number is still unconvincing – just 72,109.

"Our plans and projects are ambitious, but we have a good chance of fulfilling them," Merkel said on Monday at a government conference on electric vehicles.

After watching this video, you will probably come to the following conclusions: a) crossing the road when you're under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, is one of the worst things you can do as a pedestrian, and b) that this young lady is more lucky than a swimming pool full of horseshoes and four-leaf clovers. New Photos of 2014 Toyota Corolla Sedan Leaked on the Web? [Updated]

Posted: 28 May 2013 11:12 AM PDT

Update: As pointed out by our readers, these two pictures of the 2014 Corolla aren't the real deal; they're renderings from Humster3d (see the second video after the jump)

While Toyota isn't hiding the fact that a new generation of the Corolla sedan is coming out this year having previewed the car through the Furia Concept at the Detroit Motor Show in January and even teased the production version via this picture last week, the company says it won't actually reveal the compact model until June 6.

As always, the interwebs have a different opinion, and besides these photos that were leaked online in February, we now have a new pair of images, purportedly of the production 2014 Corolla sedan, courtesy of Encontracarros.

Do you want a classic 1970s Italian style sports car? Have you ever thought about the Maserati Khamsin? While not very well known outside of true Maserati fans, I think it's the epitome of this style/look of car for said period, and since it's built under the tutelage of Citroen, it's also a comfortable cruiser, and quite advanced for its day, may I add. Posted: 28 May 2013 09:43 AM PDT

Why would a Saab enthusiast want to give up his rare 2002 Saab 9-3 Viggen and consider going Japanese? Well, let's just say he wants to try something different. As someone who has owned several Saabs in his life, his wish is understandable.

Featured in the "BRZorthat" segment of the After/Drive show on the Drive online video network, the discussion between Mr. Saab and the host of the show, Mike Spinelli, gets pretty interesting when the guest explains why he would consider a used Honda S2000 as a replacement for his Saab.
