OpEd: Is the Jaguar F-Type Really Worth All That Hype?

Posted: 03 May 2013 01:00 PM PDT

I haven't seen a Jaguar F-Type in the flesh, never mind driven (or being driven in) one. Thus, just like the rest of you I rely on info from established fellow journalists to gain some insight on what has been heralded as the spiritual successor to the iconic E-type.

So far, I've seen two videos comparing the new Jag against the Porsche 911 Cabriolet, from EVO's Tiff Needell and Autocar's Steve Sutcliffe. When it comes to British journalists sampling a British car I tend to be a bit cautious. You know, once bitten (not by the aforementioned, but nevertheless, bitten) etc.

The F-type lost in both comparisons. Granted, the 911 is one tough cookie and, besides, losing to Stuttgart's finest is not something to be ashamed of even if it's the car you've firmly set your crosshairs on. What troubles me is that the new roadster has been hyped up as a true sports car and a return to form for the prestigious British brand. But is it?

VW to Reduce Average Emissions of Entire European Range to Under 95 G/Km CO2 by 2020

Posted: 03 May 2013 11:40 AM PDT

Whenever the Wolfsburg Leviathan sets out to get something done, it is like having a go at moving the Moon – it takes a lot of preparation and it's hard to get things going, but once it's underway, there's little one can do to stop it, and the desired result is almost always achieved.

We therefor thoroughly believe them when they say that they will reduce the average combined emissions figure for their entire European range down to 95 g/km of CO2, by the year 2020.

Jay Leno Yells "Perestroika" Out of Car Window – What did he Drive?

Posted: 03 May 2013 11:00 AM PDT

If you're into cars and you amass an extensive collection of interesting vehicular contraptions, like Jay Leno has, you are bound to get some really unique stuff, which one wouldn't even dream of seeing in the US.

Perhaps dream of seeing is pushing it a bit, because I don't necessarily mean it in an overly-positive way - cars like Leno's Volga GAZ-21 are not great by any means, but they are extremely rare Stateside and still highly interesting wherever your automotive loyalty may lie.

South Korea Enforces Tougher Fuel Efficiency Measuring Rules to Avoid Future Unpleasantness

Posted: 03 May 2013 10:20 AM PDT

You may remember the claimed fuel efficiency scandal caused by Hyundai that overstated the economy figures for several of their vehicles. They then had to compensate over 900,000 owners of vehicles sold between 2011 and 2013, with the discrepancy between the stated and actual numbers ranging from 1 to 4 mpg US.

Since Hyundai is a South Korean automaker, the situation was bound to trigger some reaction from back home, as well, and it has. The local Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced that it was going to reduce the margin for error when it comes to stated efficiency numbers, from 5 percent to just 3 percent.

British Carjackers Get Themselves Caught After Posting "Cash Sandwich" Photos

Posted: 03 May 2013 09:40 AM PDT

The original car thieves, the ones you see portrayed in movies, who used to steal a car with only the use of a bent clothes hanger, then have the vehicle stripped and sold in mere hours are gone. Their modern day equivalent is nowhere near as glamorous and daredevil-ish as one might imagine – nowadays they post "cash sandwich" photos on Facebook, to lead the cops straight to them.

This story is about a prolific group of car thieves, which were into stealing high-end cars, breaking into high-end homes and committing high-risk burglaries. A total of 15 such break-ins were reported in London posher districts.

We recently posted an article that featured an attached video showing a very brave driver and his Honda Civic Type-R, keeping up with a Nissan GT-R, on the banked twists and turns of the Nurburgring Nordschleife. It was a really impressive piece of driving, and showed just what it means for a good driver to get used to his/her car over time. Read more »

Ferrari F430 Scuderia Revisited by Autocar

Posted: 03 May 2013 08:20 AM PDT

It wouldn't be a hyperbole to say that the Ferrari 458 Italia rules its segment as it has brushed off each and every gauntlet its rivals has thrown at it, beating even the ultra-sophisticated, and more powerful, McLaren MP4-12C.

That's because it ticks all the right boxes: looks, handling, performance, sound, you name it, and the 458 Italia has it in spades. Surely, there's no one out there who would dare call it dull, right?

Volvo Reportedly Plans New Models, Including C60 Coupe and S40 Sedan

Posted: 03 May 2013 07:40 AM PDT

Volvo is looking to expand its lineup of cars, as it currently doesn't really cover many niches. They need a crossover of small dimensions and a replacement for the S40, which is exactly what they're doing, according to Automobile Magazine.

The Chinese-owned automaker is apparently very interested in making a sales-boosting small crossover, which may be called XC40. It would find a place in their range, in between the V40 Cross Country and the XC60, and take the fight to BMW, Mercedes and Audi, who sell the X1, Q3 and GLA in the same market sector.

China May Get Stretched Mercedes-Benz CLA in 2015

Posted: 03 May 2013 05:40 AM PDT

The Mercedes-Benz CLA is not a bad looking car, but it's not particularly long and therefor rear legroom is not its strongest selling point. However, if the Stuttgart-based automaker wants to sell its new front-wheel drive four-door coupe in any kind of meaningful numbers in China, a major market, a modification to its wheelbase is required – it needs to be stretched.
